I love John McLaughlin, and he seems a very nice man- but boy, did he screw Billy over in '84. Cobham was set to do a full tour with this group, and without being informed they started touring with Danny Gottileb instead (who is good, but nowhere close to Cobham). Wonder why?
Jesus, the onslaught from Cobham!! I mean, like almost everybody else, I've listened to Dennis, Weckl, Colauita, Gene Lake, Billy Kilson, Smitty Smith, Nate Smith, Greg Hutchinson, Jojo, Blackwell, Simon Phillips, Bozzio, even Anders Johansson, Marco Minneman, Virgil Donati... but does anyone put up a wall of drums the way Cobham does?
No other drummer I have ever heard has the amount of energy that Cobham has. He ie the technomaster himself. I don't care that some people call him to technical - who cares - it is just awesome to hear and see
that effect gives you a deeper look into the skill it takes to play what McLaughlin plays... it's simply awe-inspiring... Hellborg it my hero and Cobham is a genius
simonbnyc: Total fusion jerkoff? Yes, but total fusion jerkoff at its finest. Musicality for the sake of musicality. Nothing wrong with it in the right dosage.
Come on. This sucks. A guitar that sounds like a synth? Total fusion jerk-off nonsense. Cobham's the only man really playing here and his talent is wasted.
The lines McLaughlin plays would sound cool coming out of a sax or a keyboard. You just have to get over the fact that the controller is guitar shaped. Defying expectations is JM's thing; if you don't like the sound of surprise, you probably won't like JM.
I dissagree, everytime Cobham picks up a pair of sticks he plays better, he never settle for qhat he can do and continues to push his boundaries, and in doing so, every musician around him. Great guy!
This is what "Disco" sounds like in the Universe next door.

Don't get me wrong, I love Billy Cobhams's drumming. Narada Michael Walden is an equally awesome and powerful drummer.

Mclauglin is using the Synclavier Digital Guitar System. I believe Pat Metheny used it as well. This is circa mid 80's.

"Power, Passion and Beauty: The Story of the Legendary Mahavishnu Orchestra" by Walter Kolosky.
Allaboutjazz.com says:
"Kolosky has finally righted a wrong, delivering a book that is as factual an account of the group's rise and fall as will likely ever be published…”
Walter Kolosky says: …it is my turn to pay the music back. “Power, Passion and Beauty” is my offering."

Cobham never played better than when he was with McLaughlin, because he was pushed to the limit. I find a lot of his other stuff disappointing.

Agree. Although some of his funk compositions kick ass.

He's using a Roland synth guitar. The guitar has since been discontinued in production by Roland. Pat Metheney uses that guitar, too. Ü
