@taiyoutekken the guitar solo. and it didnt kill it, just defeat him and trow him into a river, where he became Aqua Tarkus (yes, it is as wacked as it sounds).
The HELP story was never a joke, when they did tryouts for drummers, they almost picked the Jimi Hendrix Band drummer instead of Carl. But when they did decide on Carl, Jimi's drummer told him about ELP and then Hendrix contacted ELP and talked about a few Jam Sessions and said he was interested in something different from his band and might like to join. He died a few weeks before the scheduled jam session and ELP's first concert at the Isle of Mann.
@Youtubi13 There is a transition sound that follows the fading synthesizer solo as the finale theme comes in. This begins at about 9:18. It is a very large Chinese Gong, of which Carl Palmer has two in his ELP drum kit. You can hear it again at 9:48.
Imagine Hendrix playing those guitar lines... If only Hendrix didn't die he would complete this band! (For those that didn't know, ELP was going to be HELP until Jimi Hendrix died.)
@BeowulfVids Actually, many believe that was a hoax, simply created because of the irony of the name HELP. Nobody really knows. But it would have been interesting had it actually happened.
@joverboss It is an electric guitar all right but it's recorded backwards. I think the first one to use that effect was George Herrison on "I'm only sleeping" from the 1966 Revolver album by the Beatles. It's later been used by Jimi Hendrix on "Are you experienced" and more extensively by Robert Fripp with King Crimson.
Records (33rpm) always will have the best sound. Has physical contact w/music. (stylus to record) Tapes suck. Even laser discs can't match L.P's. I even argued w/people who think cassettes have better sound quality than 8 tracks. The faster the tape moves across the head, the better the sound quality. Also, the bigger the tape, the better. I own a Sansui QRX7500 quad reciever , quad 8 track, Sansui SR717 direct drive manual turntable, 4 Kenwood 7070 speakers. Got in Germany in '75. Good shit.
'the messenger of fear is slowly growing nearer to time, a sign'.......wow! what more can one say. Saw them at St. Georges Hall in Bradford with a full size Tarkus on the stage and it was awesome.

Great stuff & great memories. I forgot Greg Lake doing the blues!
You might wish to check these guys out who I came across the other day on Youtube. They've got this ELP kind of groove going on. I can't post the link but if you seach Youtube for "Wigwam, Grass For Blades", you should get there. It's tv footage from the 70's.
