I'm convinced that at least part of SEL focuses on Lain's transformation from a shy, modest girl into a more assertive woman similar to how Alice went from being a girl to a queen in Through the Looking Glass. The bear costume is her childish past, and God/Dad tells her to take it off because she's now ready to become a woman.
