African-American gospel songs were often pleas to God to free them as God had freed the Jews (not actually known as Israelites until after the Exodus). Africans had their own religious beliefs but were forced into Christianity in slavery. I remember when this came out. It sounded weird, different and exotic. I didn't know it was called ska. Didn't understand most of the lyrics. It was just so catchy. That was the great thing about that era. The other big ska breakthrough song was Double Barrel (I Am the Magnificent) by Dave & Ansell Collins. The artists were creative and imaginative then.

Here's a true story. When I was 6 yo my family lived in an apartment in Alexandria, VA. One day, my brother (7) and I, walking through the complex, found a 45 rpm record in someone's trash can.
