Is this track about Ethopian Jews, or is it about those "Black Hebrew/Israelite" folks you see in major urban areas usually protesting something? (Or neither)?
Can anyone explain what this song is about? Loved it ever since it came out but never knew who sang it! Love the dreads. Love Reggae. (btw, I am a white, 68 yr old granny!)
No matter how much i listen to this song i can never bet bored of it, and yes im 16. I love ska reggae. I really believe i should of been born in the 60s :(
May be those of them who don't live in Africa remember that in past they lived in Africa, and then became slaves for white people in America etc. and they have to work hard and they don't live at their homeland, like israelites
@WipeTheNazis More in common than you know. It was with the nubian Egyptians Moses and Sarah sought refuge. It was also the nubian Egyptians Jacob, Joseph and his brothers appealed to during the famine. Solomon had storehouses in southern Egypt (Nubia) and the Queen of Sheeba is rumored to come from Nubia. In fact, Northern Ethiopia is home to African Jews known as Beta-Israel and is officially recognized by Israel. The more you know.
@WipeTheNazis I think you're missing a little music/religious history here. African-American gospel songs were often pleas to God to free them as God had freed the Jews (not actually known as Israelites until after the Exodus). Africans had their own religious beliefs but were forced into Christianity in slavery. White pastors often read Bible verses to them that support slavery As a Jew,we don't take those literally.Nor do black Ethiopi- an Jews!.Study, Learn. It's GREAT Reggae/Gospel. Enjoy!
@JuliaGoldMarrry True! (from White, American, Christian - born, college student writing a paper on Rastafari lol...but sorry Bell Hooks: I have no white guilt- directly that it is)
I love this song, the problem with the last 3 generations - who have been allowed todo what they want without recriminationation is they winge about everything. What we need to do is get back to good old victorian standards. You piss me off expect consequences - old school.
@refaelo79 go read yourself some proper history books that doesn't side with both of your countries, you and your friend right there and please discuss this crap somewhere else
@XxYonisxX kiddo what age are you? and what kind of education you have to teach me history?

I remember when this came out. It sounded weird, different and exotic. I didn't know it was called ska. Didn't understand most of the lyrics. It was just so catchy. That was the great thing about that era. The other big ska breakthrough song was Double Barrel (I Am the Magnificent) by Dave & Ansell Collins. The artists were creative and imaginative then.

what a song, i was 61/2 when it was no1, a magical time in your life and this was a magical song to go with it, all the kids would sing the first line invariably wrong "i get up in the morning ready for breakfast".
And what a snappy dresser our Desmond was!!! Well ahead of his time, I love that black and white body suit - and look at those flares!!! And there was an Indian shop which made and sold their own cheap ice lollies, 1d each - those were the days!!
i discovered the specials when i was 13 and thought i was coolest kid ever. then i met a bunch of kids at my high school and theyshowed me all the older stuff like desmond dekker and i was like "oh... :p"
