The Gap used to be Woolworth's. The 21 store used to be a bank. Where the McDonald's is used to be the Powell Street Theatre. My dad used to sell newspapers at the Newsstand behind the Cable Car turn around. There used to be a lot more local shops and working class people could afford to live there

The cars look much easier to move than on the other end of the line, down at North Point.
