  • I think there is a lot of hand labour associated with the manufacture of this blade. That is the word from Sal and the Spyderco forums. I think that accounts from some of the price.

  • Comment removed

  • 7:40 You don't need to remove the scale because they are epoxied to the blade. No salt water is ever going to go under the scale. The pins are only there for strength.

If you are concerned about rust, pins and epoxy is better. The handle surface is sealed from moisture and oxygen.

Screwed handle are only good for customization or replacement. Like you, i prefer screws, but i don't think rust is a valid point against pined handles.

  • Man, this is the best looking knife I have ever seen. But trying to get past the cash factor to get it.

  • I love Allie!

  • I like Allie.

  • Amazing that this review has been out so long and I've only just found it. Loved the intro :)

  • too long ,too long, spyderco the best ¡¡¡

  • Nutn' I'm a maker... I can tell you the total material cost in that Temp 2 is probably around 60$, and that's including the labor for manufacturing. The price comes from 100% markup at both the retail and wholesale level, so you can usually count on paying three to four times the manufacturers cost. VG-10 is actually pretty cheap when compared to American steels.

  • I really want this knife... But its soo expensive, and the grind is basically the same as the Tenacious.

  • Oh my God I live Allie! I want my own lab :)

  • Fun to see that after over 1,5 years of heavy TNP watchin there's are still reviews I haven't seen, eventhough I love the reviewed item.

  • This may not be a blade for all but it's definitely not high priced but I know it's not high value either, the price is decent you get a great sheath and a big chunk of VG10 just shy of 5" blade 4mm 0.16" thick, micarta handle, beautifully finished.

When the closest alternatives are Chris Reeve Nyala, BRKT stainless models, custom shops, etc...

FYI pinned handles are glued/epoxy or sealed, although I understand the preference of removable

  • @terahybrid forgot to add that Fallkniven close alternatives would be the SK series, Tre series, idun series or the HK series all of those more expensive than Temperance 2

  • this knife is ground on a machine i used to work in a machine shop that used a surface grinder that could accomplish this without distempering the steel.

( notice the circular swipe next to the handle this comes from the circular grinding stone) so my comment is that machine made should equal mass quantity and lower costs the only other problems this knife has is shallow jimping and should have solid tang this will not change the balance enough to notice.

  • I love Nutnfancy's reviews, but don't go thinking that the Gerber is the same thing as the Spyderco. They might function the same way out of the box, but the Gerber isn't going to hold an edge like the Spyderco. When I was stationed in the Infantry in some third world area, I didn't want to have to sharpen my knife every couple weeks. Just sayin'.

  • 210$ at knife center.com

  • NUTN would you like to sell your Gerber Profile ? Great Review Your newest Fan.

  • I would love to see a review on the spyderco byrdrench multitool

  • Its a huge chunk of japanese vg-10 steel, with micarta handles. think about the price point of the delica and how much more steel and handle material is in the temperance.

  • @ripshot2222 think about how many parts are in the delica,

  • i say this knife should be... 60 bucks >.<

  • @completelyrock 60 bucks? Are you kidding!

  • Funny thing perspective. After buying a couple of Striders & a Sebenza (LOVE 'em!) the price of what looks to be a very nice knife, the Temperance does not seem too outrageous. No I am not rich at all. I just am big on 2nd kind of cool.

  • Hey nutn u got is sorted bro. Good review and shsring of knoledge. Keep it up bro

  • As far as the POU of this blade I think your right but I feel that this may have been designed also as a hunting "small game" Mid game" knife. Any thoughts on this?

  • Love the knife reviews.

Greetings from Holland where you are also wellknown within the knife community.

    Keep up the good work!

  • do you need jimping also on a woman? ;)

  • what's the hole on the blade for?

  • @88Josh66 Its just the spyderco trademark, every spyderco has a hole in it.

  • Well after a year I saw this vid, I just pull the plug and bought the knife I fell in love with. The $200 dollar does not scare me as I think the materials, quality, work and finish of this imported and yes exclusive Japanese knife is well worth it. I don't collect knifes I use them, so a light duty camping knife will be here very soon, the only thing I see missing is a handle strap for safe exterior backpack carrying to be ready for action, I guess for that my A1 will still prevail.

  • Cool blade

  • Fuck, I love the laws and nature of Finland, but I want to live in America for the guns and cheap knives, that SRK costs 120 euros here.

  • Do you think the steel would chip out delimbing logs?

  • JIMPING !!!!

  • it may be better than many knives, and have a greater steel and all.. but dude, spending 200 dollars on a knive so you can use on the woods? that's just stupid, IMO.

Not saying you are stupid nutn, i'm a very big fan of the prject, i just think spyderco kinda went over the top with this one...

i have a mora #2, that costed me like 12 euros and it works perfectly.

    but anyway, just my opinion..

  • @irulemuch If money was no object? Which knife would you prefer? The Mora or the Temperance? Some people will happily spend over $ 200,- on a knife. It’s a matter of perspective. I agree that knives over $ 150,- are essentially luxury items, but spending a little bit more money makes it possible to buy the knife you want, rather than the knife that will do its job adequately.

  • @rafaelherschel what knife would i prefer to work in the woods? the mora. what knife would i prefer to collect, cool factor nr 2? the spyderco, in my perspective, is WAY to pricy for me to just trash in the woods. i just coudln't do that, no matter i had the money or not.

  • Spyderco's knives, *all* of them, are priced with a fixed profit percentage on top of the cost of the manufacture of the knife. Sal Glesser himself will confirm this for you.

As you have shown, the Temperance 2 is made in Japan. Japanese made knives have a higher manufacture cost than other countries of origin - value of the Yen against the dollar and the premium market prices of the well-known Seki City knife makers account for most of this. It could be made in China from 8Cr13MoV for $50-70.

  • puppy.

  • Why is it expensive? A lower sales volume means a higher price (to cover the start up costs). The Temperance doesn’t have a ‘tactical’ look. It doesn’t look like a traditional (American) hunting knife. Knives like this sell to a specific group of people, not in large volumes… Hence a higher price.

  • @rafaelherschel Correct. Not only that but Japanese manufacture makes costs higher. Taiwanese or Chinese manufacture could bring down costs but materials would have to differ (I think Taiwan would be the way to go as premium US steels could be used there.

  • I'd rather get a FEHRMAN knife.

this spydie is good but wouldn't want it in the field doing HEAVY work, its too brittle.

  • i was considering this or a Chris Reeve Pacific. very close call right now

  • I picked up a Temperance one a few years ago on ebay for 60 bucks... Loved the grind and the VG10... However do not like the handle ego's at all... makes it hard to food prep on a flat surface.. newer on looks to correct that, however i wish i had bought the Perrin camp knife which i was also looking at at the time.. now they are rarely seen and command top dollar when they do show up.. Your lucky to have one. Its a better knife then either Temperance.

  • Hello fellow knife enthusiasts. I am trying to help promote an awesome new knife forum (brand new! Only 3 members!), and I figured i should post some comments among folks who like knives! So, check out these forums, and join now to be one of the original 10 members! Remember, we arent selling anything, nor do we want your information, we just want to start a really diffrent kind of knife forum where members are treated like friends, not JUST members. microbevel () darkbb () c0m

  • I disagree with the comparisons used. The Temp 2 is resembles a BRKT or some other bushcraft knife company but done in mass production. It's very ascetically pleasing, beautiful grind, amazing steel, micarta handles are just fantastic.

In terms of performance? Maybe a SRK would perform similarly but as you said, the 2nd kind of cool is the beauty :) something a fugly SRK doesn't have.

  • This knife is too highly priced. It is a great knife but certainly not worth $200. My $45 Gerber Big Rock is just as good if not better. I would say the right price for Temperance will be around $75. I think another reason it is so expensive is that it is made in Japan.

  • self defense blade IMO

  • Just bought it... I'm so excited! :D

  • lol she got excited so awesome

  • Love this design.

  • how would this the temperance be for a tactical knife for a gift for a guy going to the sandbox.......i see it being effective, feedback?

  • 206 good price for this?

  • I agree, Micarta doesn't have THAT much traction. Not that it's a bad material but lets be realistic here. It can be slick. Hold on tight, but you should be doing that anyway.

  • I really enjoy your knife review. and you are very populer in south korean knife community too.

    thank you.

  • I'm enjoying your comments, boodoochild, and hello to South Korea! -- Veri (Nutnfancy's sister)

  • in finland it costs 250€ about 340$

  • great review i was actually looking for a teklok review so this video was excellent, thanks.

  • I like it but to much $.

  • 11, you can by 11 gerbers for the price of the spydie

  • @flabazoid And you'll go through 22 of them before you wear out the Spyderco.

  • I like the looks it reminds me of my Tenacious,, but aint got that kind of money for a blade,, great video

  • Comment removed

  • dude that knife has some great looks huh, but i would never buy a $200 knife because i use ALL my knives and every knife can break..... but overall one sexy knife

keep up the good work nutn

  • That knife looks great.

I'd take a small round file or a dremmel tool to it, to carve some "Stag" like grooves in it.

Keep up the great work Nut-n!!

  • i think it is leaf shaped.

  • what kind of camera do you use

  • I've got to say it...Allie is a very good looking Lab!!! She has a perfect feminine muzzle that's properly boxy. Good Girl!

  • The phenomenon Nutn is talking about--demand for a good being an increasing function of price--is known in economics as "Veblen goods".

  • the main contributing factor to the cost is abrasives. there is so much abrasive used in full flat grinding and finishing such a large stainless blade.

  • your dog looks like mine what breed mine a staph/Labrador

  • She's a black lab. -- Ver (Nutn's sister)

  • @nutnfancy what is the brand name and model of the bottom knife shown at 5:57 ? It has a stainless steel blade and looks wicked japanese miniature samurai sword. Thank you.

  • @EL3minutero

I believe that is a fallkniven Professional Hunter's Knife (PHK).

  • $200!?!?!? sooooooo not worth it, another good review though, thanks nutnfancy

  • $175 or so. Expensive but cool. I'd rather have the Gurkha by Chopper (Fitzen's shop)

  • I'm with you, alexe. Or TWO of Chopper's handmade kitchen knives..yes! -- Veri (Nutn's sister)

  • @alexebox its more of a system knife, axe and knife...

  • The Cold Steel SRK is NOT a stainless steel knife, it's plain carbon steel, and a very cheap one for that matter.

  • What's the point of that small bore hole near the thumb rest? It serves no purpose, other than adding to cost.

  • AFAIK it is their trademark and they have to apply it to their knives in order not to lose it.

You can also put a lanyard through there.

  • its a Spyderco thing,

and I'm not sure that it adds cost,

  • nutnfancy is the Alton Brown of weaponry. Thank you, sir. This is a beautiful knife but have to agree with the objection of a $200 price tag. I noticed it was manufactured in Japan rather than China (see nutnfancy's review of other Spiderco knives). Slave child labor tends to be cheaper than labor in first world countries.

Dude, keep it up and thanks for your work!

  • the cost is sad, it is attractive but I cant say it is in my mind any better than kershaws of the same size and quality.

  • the knife I was thinking about was the echo in AUS8A

  • Show me a Kershaw of the same quality as the Temperance 2? The ZT 0121 is the only one but it costs 189.00+ bucks.

  • hey im looking for a tech lock for my belt, and i cant find them. any idea on what it is really called, and where to get them? how 'bout a revue of clips on knives???

you R the best nutn, love the show!

  • Try the Blade Tech company.

  • From what I see on the Temperance, it looks like it would do well in the POU of small game and bird cleaning and skinning. If you're a professional bird guide and clean and skin birds day in and day out this might be a good knife as it'll hold that edge Nutn' is always talkin about. Just my 2 cents. If there was something comparable in the $60 range I might get one but upwards of $200...I'd be more inclined to get a CZ-82 pistol.

  • for about half the price, i'd rather have a RAT 4 or 6

  • Nutnfancy, good video.

To address the price point Spyderco works on a fixed cost/msrp markup percentage. If a blade MSRP's at $300 and is available in the high $100 range it simply cost more to make than a knife with a MSRP of $269, etc.

As for the reason, I'm not sure. Price of yen, scales, shipping, design, etc all may vary. I DONT work for Spyderco by the way.

  • 2nd that.....i got the RAT 3,4,5 and rtak 2....

I think the rat 5 is the all around best though.

  • kickurdog - your name matches your mentality. And btw, you're blocked too. -- Veri (Nutn's sister)

  • LOL!!! Knife Companies should pay Nutn for his advice!

I love the Color of the Handle and the overall Geometry óf the knife! But 175$ retail and VG-10...meh!

  • From what I understand the temperance is designed as a fighting knife that's why it has a thin tip and such. I wouldn't do to much woods testing with it.

  • good honest review..on the Temperance

    just got my Spyderco Tenacious...

and it was everything your review said it was gonna be....

    thanks again Nutnfancy.....

  • anyone who can talk about a single blade for 30 minuets is cool in my book.

  • i love his vid an other like his but his the best becuz 4 me if i buy something an im not happy u know u cant sell it for what u payed at lest he help an tells u whats good or ok exc

  • i think it should be more in the range of 75-100 dollars tops

  • beginning is the best.

  • When the scales are not removable like this knife often they use some sort epoxy to help hold the scales on. This also seals the blade and makes it doubtful moisture will ever get in there to rot the steel.

  • 27dcx mentioned doing a Bark River knife review and I agree. Nutnfancy seems to be a big fan of Cold Steel knives. I'd like to see him compare Cold Steel to Bark River on price and quality.

  • Hahahaha " She didn't say POU, she should've " I like this blade but too pricey for me

  • LOL!! -- Veri (Nutn's sister)

  • is it veri doin the replies now not nutns son? i thought when nutn did the luvchat show he said his son did the replies? i guess he's too busy with the gf huh? mayby he thinks he's too cool for TNP lol jks

  • TacticalDoodle has gone off to school. :(

You'll have to settle for me. -- Veri (Nutn's sister)

  • and i bet he's lovin every minute of his new found freedom i know i am!! lol

and i don't think we're settling veri quite the contrary ;)

  • Haha love the into, you have such a cute dog.

  • MADE IN JAPAN!!!!!!!! IM NEVER GOING TO BUY A JAPONESE BLADE FOR 200 Dollars!!! other than that i understand marketing and all but i must say USA , USA keep the vids comming

  • Moreover no moisture can get between scales and steel. When scales are screwed, there could be some minor gaps (between steel and scales) in which water stays for long time and voila - rust. So pinned scales may be even better. Of course, I like tactical look of screwed scales too ;-)

  • Around 8:40 you told about servicing blade when using in wet conditions. IMHO it is not a big deal, that scales aren´t removable. My Browning Crowell/Barker with very similar handle construction made of 1085 steel (significantly more prone to rust than VG10) and i never had any problem with rust even in wet. And even if I ever have, there if no problem with removing some stain.

I agree: it is shame, that Temperance is so expensive.

  • "She didn't say POU, she should have"

    Hahaha good one Nutn

  • There are some good Entrek offerings out there that compete too. Not as big on the 2nd kind of cool, but what the heck as long as you're gonna throw in the SRK! For about half the price on the Javalina. I'd compare the Kershaw Echo, also a lot less, my Echo with the camo scales is awsome, great all around small camp knife. I bett Chopper or Fitzen could work up a great $200 knife that would be just as high on the 2nd kind of cool. Awesome job as always, keep up the great work!

  • Did the marking on the other side of the blade say Japan? My only spyderco is the para-military..and it says golden colorado, usa, earth. what gives if it says japan?

  • what a beautiful dog

  • Lol the more you pay, the better the product in my mind, but like you said thats how I feel lmao.

  • I love allie!

Great review as always, but 27 minutes?

Took forever for this to load on my computer, and Im on highspeed..... YIKES!

  • A lot of people have problems with the new nutnfancy videos because most of the new videos are set up to open the HQ version automatically. If the download is taking forever, click the HQ button to convert to standard quality and the video should download faster.

  • Would also like to see table top/field test reviews of the Dayhiker, Forester style spydercos.

Pretty much agree with your takes on the blade. Overpriced for what you get. TOO many other competing similar blades out there.

  • @jamesgang94591

I agree. I thought 10 minutes was long.. These Ginormous vids have problems loading on my (sometimes) high-speed connection

  • he has a point there are some guys how like TNP but dont have all half an hr to watch i find myself stoping 10 min in and doing somthing elce and i have been folwing the progect form varry neer the start

and ya some stuff needs a long video but not a knife revew

  • Then go somewhere else. This is the TNP project...get over it!

  • Get a grip...its a youtube show...good or not...that is all it is...let the man voice his opinion, and leave be. he likes em short and to the point...so be it...you like em long and drawn out...wooo hooo.....is there noting else you can complain about going on in the world today?

  • I understand your point, stan. They're long, but they are in-depth and if he makes them shorter, people complain about that too. In the end, he makes them the way he thinks the majority of his viewers would like to see...and also the way HE likes them. For myself, sometimes I have to load it and then watch it in between doing other stuff. -- Veri (Nutn's sister)

  • thanks for geting back to me makes it seam like there is a point to wrighting on here im home sick today so i get to watch some of the longer videos in one shot

  • Comment removed

  • @p20 gotta love that!

  • There is one thing that could be done to make Nutn's awesome vids a bit lighter: the high-quality ones (h264) are encoded at 60 FPS (whereas the mid- and low-quality versions at far more reasonable 30 FPS - just like NTSC-encoded tv signal). There does not seem to be a lot of merits stemming from such high framerate and it is the main reason for the "Ginormous" filesizes, eg the Temperance2 review is 254MB in high quality.

  • what are you talking about?

  • People yammering about huge vids, right? YouTube player does not show you any technical details of the vids but if you use a tool capable of downloading a vid to your PC, you can determine what codec (and settings) it was encoded with. Nutn's high quality vids are encoded with h264 at 60 FPS - such a high framerate basically doubles the amount of data that needs to be sent to the viewer. If this was changed it would result with smaller HQ vids without affecting the resolution or overall quality

  • what are you taking about ? who cares!!

  • I don't realy know, just guessing, but maybe the 'high pricing' has to do with the low value of the dollar atm.. 175USD today is 117Eur thats about the same price as a Fallkniven F1 or an EKA Nordic W11, both very similar to that Temperance as for quality, design and brand...

  • Thanks for reviewing this one. I'd love to hear your opinion on any of Spyderco's Jerry Hossom designs, e.g. the Dayhiker, Woodlander, Forager, Forester and their N690Co steels. I've thought about creating an outdoor system around each of those knives.

    Mark

  • your dog is so cute lol you are awsome

  • Nutn, I know you hear this all the time but I am totally stoked to see your review of the RD9!

  • i wish my dog liked knives

  • best channel on yt

  • Nice dude! Knives to me are like the firearms to you. I probably have a thousand or so in my collection. I picked one of these up for around 150 on craigslist a while back. My personal favorite is the Gerber Combat Folder. Love the leverage size and the blade is marvelous. The Temperance gets pretty slick if it gets wet too. Not a good feature for a knife if you need to use it. Mater of fact, not a good feature for anything when the time comes. Well, there is one thing I can think of! LOL!!!

  • Why do comments get removed?

  • I love that freakin' dog! If I didn't live alone, I'd have one too. Can't leave em home though...I work too much

  • excellent reviews from this enthusiast, I'm subscribing.

  • welcome to the TNP party...prepare to spend some money on knives and guns

  • haha.. I would agree.. when i see how well or poorly some stuff behaves it makes me want it or reconsider my reasoning for liking the product.

  • not worth the loot I recently bought a gerber same size and basic shape for 20 bucks. If I'm going to buy a pretty knife I'll buy a hibben.

  • jesus chrsit $200 for a knife?!!!

  • some blades sell for 500, but they are the super high quility blades that you most likely will never need to replace.

  • you get what you pay for ~

  • There is a saying, a really great saying it goes

: you get what you pay for

  • yeah, but that doesnt mean shit nowadays does it ?

  • well maybe to an idiot like yourself,

  • Ah an internet hardass! i just cant see spending $200 of my hard earned money on a fixed blade when i can go buy a used shotgun or handgun for the same price. Today in real life just because the price is high doesnt mean it is actually a "fine product" cold steel is a good example of that.

  • all you americans are the same

  • do you just come to these videos to give people a hard time? I checked out your channel if youre such a rastafarian why do you want to instigate others. That doesnt seem like something a rastafarin would do. And I know some rastafarians they are great people and I get along with them stop giving them a bad name please.

  • its matter of perception.. you usually get what you pay for (however it is up to you to decide how far your dollar should go).. you want a handgun for 200$ ? thats fine.. you are not in the segment that a company like spyderco would be advertising to anyway.

  • Let's see more of the doggie in future vids! (Dogs are cuter than most folks that hang out in gun stores.)

  • 27 minutes kind too long but cool

  • For about $200.00,I wish the blade was about a inch or two longer!!Too short of a blade..

  • CEO? CEO?

  • Beautiful knife.

  • Nutn , - your nife is B-E-Autiful ! keep with the good reviews ! c u in your next review- cheers

  • Dude great review ,i agree with you ,,,is it a nice knife ,yes it is but its a nice knife at the $129.99 (tops) price point id much rather see USA on the blade, keep them commin man love you vids

  • Another great review by nutnfancy !

I would agree that $200 is too much for this knife, I would be interested around the $100 price point. I'm sure there are some collectors out there who will still purchase regardless of the high price.

  • Alie is super !!!! One of the cutest dogs i 've ever seen!!!

The knife is way too expensive and i am really reluctant to let the laws of marketing apply to me ... if you are a collector, sure ... nothing to say but as a task blade you got to be joking ! ... at least for the vast majority of consumers out there.

  • well 329.95 is the MSRP, it's the suggested price. Street price is about 180.

  • If you take a look at spyderco's site it msrp's at $329.95!! Freakin ridiculous if you ask me.

  • SWEET, nice to see another Blade review, it's been a while.

Any chance of seeing a review for the cold steel scimitar?

  • WOW... Nutnfancy, Your videos/review are getting to be super high quality.

  • VG-10 (though good) is not worth the OUTRAGEOUS $329.95 MSRP. I can think of an array of knives that I would carry if I were to spend that much money.

  • the dog is feeling this knife, great review by the dog

  • SWEET DOGGIE!!

  • what about the knife?

  • I actually got bored after after the dog disappeared, but I'm sure its a nice piece of steel.

I really only watch the handgun (and some rifle) reviews though

    such a nice doggie............. :)

  • ho,..ok
