  • Not the song..a rip off..sue them.

  • Bobby Sands...a man who liked to romanticise his republican " struggle " through verse. How romantic was his alledged bombing of furniture shop in Belfast? Not the stuff of fairytales really. The reality is that he and his comrades dealt interror, abduction, murder , petty crime . I wonder how many of the idiots who post crap on this site live through an era when the IRA's "war" consisted of bombing bus stations , hotels and the ethnic cleansing of innocent protestant civilians? Romantic? No!

  • @fastfatlad actually the only paramilitary in Ireland to state they wanted ethnic cleansing and a hollocaust for their rivals was the UDA/UFF so i suggest you get your facts right bobby sands gave hes life for a struggle he believed in right or wrong anybody that does that deserves respect

  • GOD BLESS EIRE AND FUCK THE BRITISH!

  • @MrJtj73 You are a headless chicken do you know that, and Bobby Sands was not, I bet you wouldn't say that if you were in the presence of his fans !

  • @MrJtj73 Mate...You're embarressing yourself.

  • sounds alot like The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald......

  • @pizilla Exactly.

  • slan papa doc... great insight to the orgins of this great song....my da was in the kesh with bobby...dont think i can watch this hunger film thats out now be too hard to watch

  • From:: unitedireland.tripod. (com)

Christy Moore originally recorded 'Back home in Derry.' When Bobby Sands wrote this song, while being held in Long Kesh prison, he called it 'The Voyge.' This is what Christy Moore says about how he came about the song.

  • I was playing in Derry and staying with The Berrett Family. After my gig, we were gathered in Chamberlain St. having an banter and drinking tea when a bit of song broke out. A lad, just home from The Blocks, sang these verses and subsequently wrote out the words for me. At the time, the name Bobby Sands was not known to the world as it is today.

  • The following night I played in Bellaghy where the same process took place when I stayed with Scullion. Later on, he "sang" McIlhatton for me and told me it had been written by Bobby Sands, with whom he had shared a cell while "on the blanket." The name was becoming known to me.

  • He used the air of The Wreak of the Edmond Fitzgerald from Gordon Lightfoot, an air which I suspect has earlier origins. My version of Bobby's song is shorter than the original.

  • its not even derry dats jus to help d stupid english... i tink people wil find its doire!! stupid english jus cudn understand!!

  • 1st time heard was by a group called morison's visa out of waterbury connecticut. I worked with the lead singer.........who educated me on my irish roots! Outfrigging song.......says it all!

  • Bobby sands- a true Irish Hero."Ni bhrisfidh siad me mar tá an fonn saoirse agus saoirse múintir na hÉireann i mo chroí. Tiocfaidh lá eigin nuair a bheidh an fonn saoirse sin le táispeaint ag daoine uilig na hÉireann ansin tchífidh muid éiri na gealaí." Tiocfaidh ar lá. RIP Bobby. is tú mo laoch.

NO BRITISH MAN WOULD EVER HAVE THE GUTS TO STARVE THEMSELVES WITH DIGNITY AND FAITH FOR THEIR COUNTRY AS MP SANDS MRS THATCHER SHOULD HAVE GAVE INTO HUNGER DEMANDS (she inflicted terror in ireland)

  • the song was written as a poem by bobby sands whilst he was in long kesh, christy moore later took the melody from grodon lightfoot's hit "the wreck of edmund fitzgerald" and added bobby's lyrics.

  • I'm From Dublin And I Fuckin Love Derry

    Tiocfaidh Ar La

  • can someone confirm when this was written..because Gordon Lightfoot may have some answering to do- 'The Edmund Fitzgerald' has pretty much the same exact melody???

  • It was written by Bobby Sands while he was on the dirty protest in Long Kesh gaol

  • Blast it Boys...

  • good version , thanks for posting

  • The lyrics say "old robert" but it's Bold Robert...

  • Sure, sorry for my mistake.

The lyrics were copied/paste from another site.

  • Very true. In fact, "bold Robert" is actually Bobby Sands. He wrote the song.

  • no, it's Robert Emmett. 1803, etc

He had one of his cellmates from derry tell him what he knew of Derry's history during the United Irishmen period

  • i love it.....

other great irish songs : Kilkelly

and star of the county down

  • Do you mean "Kilkenny" ?

  • kilkelly is am village in county mayo.

the song is written like letters, an american with irish grandgrandparents found.they´re from 1860-1892 an about the life in ireland (hunger and poverty, rebellion against england,no work....)

the song is printed in my english-book ^^

THANKS!!!

  • Glad you like Sinead !

    Slainte !

  • Missing Verse (1:06-1:38)

At the mouth of the foil we bid farewell to the soil

As down below deck we were lying.

O Doherty's scream woken up from a dream

By a vision of Old Robert dying.

The sun burned us cruel as we dished out the gruel

Daniel Connor was down with a fever.

Fifty rattles to-day bound for Botney Bay

How many would meet their receiver?

  • Yeah, I've never put it.

    I'll do it right now.

    Thanks mate ! ;)

  • by the way buddy its spelt Foyle, i.e the river

  • why is it left out of the song??

  • Few mistakes there mate.

1)it's foyle not foil as in the river

2)Bold Robert not Old as in Bold Robert Emmet

3)It's just O'Connor, Daniel Connor wasn't even born till the 1830's so could hardly have taken part in the 1803 rebellion.

    4)50 rebels not rattles

  • lol

  • Nice song...I'm not Irish... but I love Derry and his interesting history!

  • bebitaly you do know Derry isn't a person but a city??

  • its about irish rebels being transported to australia in the early 1800,s thousands of english were transported to you know, not just the irish, you didnt have the monopoly on being stamped on,great song though

  • Spot on, great song.

  • omg i nearly forgot for ten men dead.

the hunger strikers of 1981:Bobby Sands,Francis Hughes,Patsy O'Hara,Raymond McCreesh, Joe McDonnell.Martin Hurson,Kevin Lynch,Kieran Doherty,Thomas McElwee, and Michael Devine. may ya find peace in death.

  • tiocfiagh ar' la' , up th R.A. time for peace time to go!

  • What place has such a comment got on this page?? This song has nothing to do with the IRA. It was a beautiful poem written by Bobby Sands MP, which showed he was ´man of talent and morales, not the common thug the Brtish painted him as. For a peaceful future in Northern Ireland. You also misspelt Tiocfaidh.

  • Bobby Sands was a liberation hero - don't try to paint him as some kind of watered-down pawn of the modern Provo sellouts. His wife supports the RIRA and 32CSM anyway, so the Brits and their Sinn Fein pals can't claim Sands's memory.

  • Thats his sister whos in the 32CSM not his wife you twat

  • deadly

  • I am german and I love this song. I don't care adout rebellsong or not. It's a lovely tune.....

  • Can't wait til the 10th =)

  • Ireland

  • Hum... Yeah. :P
