Steel... went to hit the thumbs up and caught the thumbs down. Sorry sorry sorry. Big apologies. I've done that on more than once. Wish the thumbs were the other way about. Sorry :(
I believe that this was the first real war in which soldiers saluted. Thats all they really knew. Over time it changed to what it is now. The salute has created by English knights anyway,
Krirre At Gettysburg there were a total of approx 150,000 soldiers total with over 55,000casuluties. Fredericksburg If I recall correctly about 100,000.
How many soldiers could there be on a single battlefield? In old pictures it just seems to be some hundreds that you see.. On the photograph.. Was it really like 30 000 men ?
Gettysburg was well above that number. In fact, at times during the World Wars a half a million-plus at a battle was not unheard of. It seems that cameras have a hard time capturing the enormity of the battlefield. Also, movies are limited by the amount of reenactors they can muster, which is usually in the hundreds.
So there could be like 80 000 men on one spot fighting? In some old photograph i was looking at, there was just like 10 corpses on the ground.. But i believe the camera cant catch them all..
This is an excellent film, not many movies move me to tears but this one did, I was speechless after I left the theatre, I actually had to work hard to hold back my tears so my friends wouldn't see me cry outside the theatre. But when I watch my DVD at home it always gets the tears flowing, no matter how many times I watch it. Every American should watch this movie at least once a year.
You don't even need to be American. There's something about the American Civil War that holds me. Maybe the enormity. The insanity (like most wars). It was partly documented by stills photography which gives a sense of what happened.
The music and the film moves me too and i am always left with tears streaming down my face at the end.
What gets me about the war is the dedication shown on both sides throughout the war, each believing that what they were doing was right, only one side was right though, the North. TrefyJot, did you ever visit the USA? Have you ever been to a Civil War battlefield?
Gettysburg is awesome, I've been there seven times and always go back when I can, I learn something new every time I return. Just listening to the "Glory" soundtrack while driving around Gettysburg is a great experience.
I have a general interest in history which, rightly or wrongly, is marked by wars. I have seen the First and Second World War cemeteries and battlefields in northern France and surrounding Ypres/Ieper(french/belgian). Sticking with the American theme the American Cemetary near Omaha beach is the one that had me fighting against tears there and then. So many white crosses intermingled with Stars of David.
TrefyJot,It's OK, I've done that a few times also. I was stationed in Germany with the Army from 98-01 and I used that opportunity to visit Normandy, what a moving experience it is, every American should see that place, it will change their lives. I also visited London, loved it, especially the Tower and the Imperial War Museum. It is very sad that mankind cannot seem to settle their differences with words instead of weapons.
Despite living in Britain(Wales), i've not visited either the Tower or Imperial War Museum. Not that worried about the Tower but wanna see IWM. Greenwich is also very interesting. I know GLORY isn't gonna be 100% but it is powerful and provocative.
Although not completely historically accurate from what I have read (mostly time frame, I read somewhere they were at ft. wagner within just a few months of forming up), it is still done damn well.
Here wss a movie I thought would impress my high-school date... that afterwards, I walked out of the theatre speechless and numb. How different are we today?
a timeless masterpiece...one of my favourite of all time..denzel washington, matthew broderick, cary elwes, morgan freeman & andre broughton gave convincing & worthy performances...ed zwick & freddie fields did a wonderful job in makin this movie...madd love for james horner & the harlem boys choir,4 such an emotional & moving soundtrack..."give em hell 54th"!!
Seriously, this movie is like one of the most heroic, great, inspiring, GLORIOUS films ever made. I mean it. You feel for the soldiers, you know they're not going to be able to take the Fort, but you know, they're going to try. The courage and bravery of the men is moving. I love this movie and I think it's one of the best war and Civil War movie too.
i would have lasted about 1 second in the civil war... -_-

Although this is a great film, does anyone know why American soldiers back then used the British army salute, as it is different nowadays?
