@SamhainTheDark You are quite right of course. She arranged his trips to the theatre (there was more than one). The model church you always see Joseph constructed for her( just one of many he made as presents for those who had been kind to him) - but it was her husband who came to the Hospital to receive it. Just as in the film, Joseph enjoyed those trips to the theatre so VERY much - it was lovely of her to arrange it for him.
@MademoiselleAnna Yes, because the film was based on Treves' memoirs(as you may know). Joseph didnt tell him very much about his family, and he was very private person anyway. He never told Treves she had died. He only hinted to Treves about aspects of his life that had distressed him, such as the workhouse. I hope a NEW film would be made soon, to show how much she loved him, and helped him in whichever way she could, mostly importantly in his education, and his religious beliefs.
Not just the truth about his mother, but all his life - which I think would be even more upsetting than this film, because it would be as true as possible. There are parts of his life (before he was admitted to the Hospital permanently) which are so sad I can hardly bear to think about, or even imagine.
"I must be a great disappointment to her...if only could find her so should could see me with such lovely friends here now, perhaps she could love me as I am"... nothing is worse than thinking one's own mother doesn't love them. Absolutely nothing. I would have been honored to be Mr. Merrick's friend and confidant. But he is in a better place now. God rest his soul. " I wish I could sleep like normal people." Makes me cry.
@capitanzach That little part in the film gives completely the wrong impression of Joseph's mother, who actually loved him very much. She died when he was about 11. A quote from Joseph's little autobiography: ''...She was a good mother to me.''
I love then seen when he cries because he feels he's do ugly to be in the same room as a beautiful woman. It's sad but amazing! I loved this movie so much.
@Schizima i was teasing. actualy they are. in sunni/wahaabi law there are more strict laws. but shia law is a girly- friendly version. and btw i hardly take wicpedia so seriously a lot of things there are written off the top of clever people or educated assumptions.
It's so sweet when Joseph first comes into the room with his new clothes on... he's trying to impress the girls, but they say nothing! It's so sad and sweet. He's only 23 I think, or 21! My age!
For most people, your natural reaction is to pity Mr. Merrick; however, you must look past this. From all the books I've read and programs I've watched Mr. Merrick living in a hospital room (with 24/7 care, i.e. food, clothes, warmth, books, love), with gifts from high nobility and social elites, his vision of life (at this point) was beyond euphoric. There are many times Treve's mentions Mr. Merrick was happy as a school boy. He was experiencing new things daily, that he never did before.
@usnate1 im pretty sure its the other way around. at least when u kill them...its all over with, but when u deprive them love/respect the pain is prolonged.
I'm not sure if you could do this @swiftalb but do you think you could have subtitles for when John talks? There are times where I can't understand him. I am hoping it's not my hearing :P
@HotBroodish They indeed came in kit form, and Mr Merrick's nurses helped him to make them. The one you always see, kept in The London Hospital Archives Museum, actually of Cologne Cathedral, is the one he gave to Mrs Kendall. He gave them as presents to people, the only way he felt he could express his thanks for their kindnesses to him.
@MrsJosephMerrick Ohh, thank you so much for that answer. I've been wondering for years. I'm very interested in Joseph Merrick's history. I purchased a book recently, but haven't started reading. If you could make any recommendations I certainly would appreciate it. Thanks again!
@HotBroodish Thank YOU. Actually, after I replied to your comment, I realised I made a mistake, got a bit confused. I think the model is of St Stephans, in Mainz - I should remember because Ive been there to see the Chagall stained glass windows a good few years ago now!
Well, I dont know what book youre reading, but of course I highly recommend the Howell & Ford ''The True Story of the Elephant Man'' - maybe thats the one you have! Its the ''Bible''for all Merrick admirers! :)
The tea room scene is one of the most emotional in film history, rivaling that of the ending to "It's a Wonderful Life." I have to make sure I have a hankerchief next to me every thing I view it...
Man I nearly broke down just watching that part, Im a big David Lynch fan, but this is one movie I can't watch too often, its too emotionally draining.
Thank you for posting this. I saw this at the theater when it was first released, I was only about 10 or 11, but was very moved even then. Last night I watched this with my kids, ages 9 and 11. I think they too were moved by it. Its even more touching now to me that I'm older and can comprehend much more of it. Thanks switalb so much, this is a great service you have provided. God's blessings upon you.
I think theres a few seconds missing from the very beginning of this part. Before Mothershead leaves she tells the the nurses that ''under no circumstances whatsoever are mirrors to be brought into the room''. Infact, it was Treves' instructions in reality- because he hoped Mr Merrick might feel ''better about himself'' if he ''forgot'' how he looked, and it might make it easier for him to interact with people.Sad, but true.Personally,I dont believe Merrick was so naive...Sorry.
@swiftalb I just thought Id point it out because other people might not realise - as its important. But in no way does it distract from my &everyone elses,I am sure, appreciation of your work of posting this film. Ive read a lot of comments saying how hard it is to get this film now on dvd, so we're lucky to have you to be able to see it. Thank you.
(Incidently,I cant cant watch it in my country, but I managed to download it off the internet just ONCE,otherwise I wouldnt have realised myself.)
awwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.........that broke my heart when he started to cry in the beginning....I loved how amazed he was when the doctor mentioned children...the poor dear...I just want to hug him...give him some sort of kindness...I'm glad he was treated so well by the doctor and his wife...even though you could tell it was hard for his wife to be so gentle around Mr. Merrick...he deserved kindness.
Indeed, a extremely difficuly picture to navigate...when you well-up...you have truly found your human side...something Mr.Merrick lived in...as he had no where else to go.
Sadly, we forget ourselves....and go into the dark area...some do not ever return.
By the way, ragarding this scene with Mrs Treves...
Joseph gave Treves the impression his mother was alive - as in this film - but she died when he was about eleven. He was very private and elusive about things like that. She loved him so very much, and hel always remembered her with reverence. She made sure he had as ''normal'' a childhood as possible. Sent him to school for basic education, even to play with children until he could no longer do so. She truly was an angel for him...
Its called ''Recapitulation'', written especially for the film. I've put it on my favourites because it s so hauntingly beautiful. You can find it on utube in full under Elephant Man Movie Soundtracks. I think it really suits Merricks soul...
@MrsJosephMerrick Thank you MrsJosephMerrick. It is hauntingly beautiful, I have to say that little music is probably my favorite from the film. All the music in the film is really beautiful though.
that jus goes to show you can't see true kindness. the most outterly beautiful people are some of the nastiest but the not so pretty are the most kind. and intelligent and it shines through their outward appearence making them beautiful inside AND out. i'm so glad john got out of the freak show bussiness and i wish i could have met him. so great!
some people are beautiful all around, but I appreciate the sentiment. The people I speak of have miraculously transcended most of human condition, albeit... LOL
The first woman who ever kindly shook his hand was a widow,Mrs Maturin, who Treves knew. The episode where Mrs Treves shakes his hand is based on this.Poor Joseph was so overwhelmed he burst into tears, and his emotions actually taxed his heart to the point he almost''died from joy.'' Knowing he had alarmed her, he apoligised after, and they exchanged letters. She often sent him things by post such as books etc. A sincerely lovely person. It is a comfort to know of these kindnesses he received.
This is sad. I just can't imagine how he felt when people would stare or scream. Its sad that such a nice and kind person had to be deformed the way he was.
this is so sad how he cried and said he's not used to being treated so nice by a beautiful woman. goes to show how nasty human society is to you when you start looking just a lil bit odd.
sometimes humans are so hateful. we have more evil than good in us. i know many people who look normal but have ugly insides!
It just pisses me off when people take one look on the outside of a person and think they're dangerous. The real evil in that situation are those whop misunderstand these deformed people. John Merrick is a prime example of a person is good on the inside no matter how deformed they are.
@BXVAce The thing is you have to realize that people weren't primed to accept different people so readily back then. This doesn't happen nearly as much anymore, unless people are thinking the other person did something deliberately bad, or they're actually bullying someone for some reason or another. In this movie, people were just responding to something that actually scared them. It's a shame, but in some ways it's no more their fault than John Merrick's.
This film should be watch to all people all around the world, cause contain such huge moral material, not so false and demagoic as a superficial view can generate...
This film it's a open discussion to how can be claim dignity to every single being on earth, about generosity, respect and friendship...about even the magic of the power of will, and so about the weight of heart and brain...and even of fascination os diversity
I totaly disagree there, its natural human emotion if they saw someone that hideos they will be disgusted and horrified and want to throw up. what is worse is ppl turn up and just put smug remarks about someone that is what is whats worse, but if I saw the elephant man I would be horrified and I could not wait to leave horrible but the truth. its hard to not be disgusted by his appearence when he looks like he is mutating out of something from a horror movie. its cold hearted but true.
thanks for posting, this clip in particular is my favorite. I wept when he meets the doctors wife and cries. This film really is quite profound. David Lynch is a genius, to say nothing of John Hurt.
you have to consider the values of people back in the 1880s. The general public was not accustomed to view such deformaties in society as often as today.
I know he had a tragic life and he was a good guy but Cmon if you saw him in the flesh for the first time you would go into total shock. even dr treeves was so shocked by his appearence when he first saw him he litterly did not blink he had a tear to his eye. even merick himself was disgusted by his own appearence, like it or not he was the most hideos and monstress looking person ever to grace the planet. a cruel and cold hearted way of putting it but very true unfortuntely.
you kidding me right. merrick had the worst type of deformities known to man. he was so hidieos that ppl would break don in total tears. no one had worser deformitys than merrick. the film even though it was not for the fainted heart it lacks something. what is the movie trying to explain what is its purpose. even though it ex[lains about merrick plot wize its very thin and at times all over the place.
merrick was far worse. he could not sleep because his head was to big. he could not talk right because he had growing bones that was making him almost it impossible to talk. do not forget he was dying at the age of 21 because the tumors were growing at an agressive rate. tree half man and the chinese guy are not his league. they are treatable and it would not take many operations has many as merick. merrick would need to be totaly rebuilt. it was effecting merricks bones and had mutliple tumors
merrick was the worst what are you on about he was the worst case scenario for deformities. kid Novemthree and the asian guy were nothing compared to merrick. do not forget also merrick had bone disease but the difference is today it could not go that far because of todays medical. but of left untreated you will see these results but docters today are still debating what he had and many believe he had a multiple of diseases that are still complicated.
I think he was the most shocking case and he was the most hideos looking person because of the complications and how young he died. those other ppl you have brought up did not have the complications of merricks disease or diseases he had. for starters only effected their face it did not effect their bones their head or how they would sleep. the asian guy his operations will only be concentrated on his face not his bones his skull or other parts of his body or reshape his entire physical form
In terms of severity his case may have been bad, but I doubt it is the most awful medical condition to ever afflict humanity.
And he isn't the most hideous in my opinion. Maybe you find his face shocking to look at but personally I find the man with growths over all of his body more alarming.
well for rebuilding his body and head and the complications serounding his case it is possibly worse because it was untreated. why it is it the worse becase his skull was almost caving his brain if he lied down like a normal person. add the fact the bones were growing into the side of his jaw making it horrible for him to talk. his left arm useless and his bones were weakening from the dissease his phyical form was has weak has a old person. other cases are lucky their whole body is not effected
I'm not an emotional guy but the scene where the doctor's wife breaks down is just tragic and beautiful. I'm not a big David Lynch fan but this film is a masterpiece.
This movie is so damned sad. But it's amazing as well. It's terrible that this is a true story; but atleast we can learn from others' mistakes- how they treat people and such.
This is so sad. I want to burst into tears just watching this guy talk. I love this movie because it shows how shallow society as a whole can be, but it also shows how a few people can make a difference in one man's life.
he is not ugly... he is beautiful. he's personality makes him very beautiful.

This is a lesson for a lost world...

John Hurt is an awesome actor. He could play a cruel character like Caligula to a tender soul like John Merrick.

thanks for posting, this clip in particular is my favorite. I wept when he meets the doctors wife and cries. This film really is quite profound. David Lynch is a genius, to say nothing of John Hurt.

you have to consider the values of people back in the 1880s. The general public was not accustomed to view such deformaties in society as often as today.
syndrah 2 years ago
I know he had a tragic life and he was a good guy but Cmon if you saw him in the flesh for the first time you would go into total shock. even dr treeves was so shocked by his appearence when he first saw him he litterly did not blink he had a tear to his eye. even merick himself was disgusted by his own appearence, like it or not he was the most hideos and monstress looking person ever to grace the planet. a cruel and cold hearted way of putting it but very true unfortuntely.
JasonVoorhees6661 2 years ago
There are people with far worse deformities...
PutsOnMyThinkingCap 2 years ago
you kidding me right. merrick had the worst type of deformities known to man. he was so hidieos that ppl would break don in total tears. no one had worser deformitys than merrick. the film even though it was not for the fainted heart it lacks something. what is the movie trying to explain what is its purpose. even though it ex[lains about merrick plot wize its very thin and at times all over the place.
JasonVoorhees6661 2 years ago
No I'm not kidding you.
Try looking up "Half-Man-Half-Tree".
Try looking up the "Chinese Elephant Man", a guy who makes Merrick look totally alright
In fact just try looking up "facial tumours" and you'll come up with a load of worse stuff.
I guess people were more sensitive back then - they thought deformed people were freaks or demons.
Nowadays they're not "freaks", they're just people with "medical conditions"
As for the film, I thought it was touching and well-acted.
PutsOnMyThinkingCap 2 years ago
merrick was far worse. he could not sleep because his head was to big. he could not talk right because he had growing bones that was making him almost it impossible to talk. do not forget he was dying at the age of 21 because the tumors were growing at an agressive rate. tree half man and the chinese guy are not his league. they are treatable and it would not take many operations has many as merick. merrick would need to be totaly rebuilt. it was effecting merricks bones and had mutliple tumors
JasonVoorhees6661 2 years ago
I was answering you saying that Merrick was the "most hideous" "monstrous" and "disgusting" looking of people ever to walk the earth.
It's not true.
I looked him up and he wasn't as shocking to look at as the kid Novemthree.
His face is in this film is the same as Merrick's real face, and I got used to it through the course of watching the film.
I didn't cry because he was ugly, I only cried when he said "I AM NOT AN ELEPHANT, I AM A HUMAN"
PutsOnMyThinkingCap 2 years ago
merrick was the worst what are you on about he was the worst case scenario for deformities. kid Novemthree and the asian guy were nothing compared to merrick. do not forget also merrick had bone disease but the difference is today it could not go that far because of todays medical. but of left untreated you will see these results but docters today are still debating what he had and many believe he had a multiple of diseases that are still complicated.
JasonVoorhees6661 2 years ago
What are *you* on about, what makes you think he is the most hideously deformed person ever to exist in history?
PutsOnMyThinkingCap 2 years ago
I think he was the most shocking case and he was the most hideos looking person because of the complications and how young he died. those other ppl you have brought up did not have the complications of merricks disease or diseases he had. for starters only effected their face it did not effect their bones their head or how they would sleep. the asian guy his operations will only be concentrated on his face not his bones his skull or other parts of his body or reshape his entire physical form
JasonVoorhees6661 2 years ago
In terms of severity his case may have been bad, but I doubt it is the most awful medical condition to ever afflict humanity.
And he isn't the most hideous in my opinion. Maybe you find his face shocking to look at but personally I find the man with growths over all of his body more alarming.
PutsOnMyThinkingCap 2 years ago
well for rebuilding his body and head and the complications serounding his case it is possibly worse because it was untreated. why it is it the worse becase his skull was almost caving his brain if he lied down like a normal person. add the fact the bones were growing into the side of his jaw making it horrible for him to talk. his left arm useless and his bones were weakening from the dissease his phyical form was has weak has a old person. other cases are lucky their whole body is not effected
