SPOILER ALERT! I have read all the books from the series (The Giver-The Messenger). Jhonas is in fact alive in the third book. If you have also read Gathering Blue you would know what im talking about. In the third book Matt becomes Mattee in ''yonder village''. In the third book they also talk about An 8 year old named Gabriel. And guese who is their ''chiefe so to speake... Jonas!

Lowry leaves the ending open for the reader to interpret. There are 2 basic interpretations - 1 jonas and Gabe really do make it to "elsewhere" and find a warm loving family celebrating Christmas to welcome them. 2 - perhaps Jonas is remembering a Christmas memory - one of the most beautiful things the Giver ever gave him - as he had Gabe are freezing to death. There are 2 other books by Lowry that accompany The Giver. One is Gathering Blue, and the other is The Messenger.

The ending is not sad at all. The giver does not die he just doesn't run off with Jonas because without him the community would not make it. Jonas doesn't die either because he makes it to elsewhere with Jonas. It's actually pretty much a happy ending if you think about it. But you never know since Lois Lowry left it a cliffhanger with the music and all.

i said it made his fate uncertain. and the giver tells jonas that the people who control the city thing are going to kill him. so it implies that he dies and i said it left jonas' fate uncertain. it never says whether theyre dead or not but again, i dont thin ktheyll go on to read the other books if theyre reading it for school
