I absolutely love this song. Dennis was the greatest singer of all time. I just wish that his brother Brian would have realized his talent. I think Dennis should have been the lead singer in Beach Boys and kicked out Mike Love, that boy is a lousy singer.
Heard good things about this album, and starting my obsession with the BB 2 years ago and vacuuming up every album I could find, I picked this one up. I only knew DW as the handsome, but dubiously talented drummer from the early 60s. This was a mature, contemporary sounding rock album. Sadly the BB were putting out the miscalculation Love YOu at the same time. Too bad they couldn't have used POBs tracks. It might have really put the BB back as critically and commercially back for good.
Dennis never got the recognition he deserved as a solo artist and a BB member. This song rocks, and shows his talent as a songwriter and musician. He's definitely missed.
Wow...a new discovery, how did THIS not get airplay in the 70s?! THIS was relevant, the surfin' sound the Beach Boys mngmt tried to force was past its day. This album & smile point to how serious these guys could be & validates their critical praise. Thanks for posting this, man, I am a serious convert! Peace...
I was in Barnes & Noble last night. This song was in a book I picked up titled something like "1000 songs you must listen to before you die." Surprisingly, a Dennis Wilson song was in it. I didn't know he was known for being a good songwriter.
@babyimawantyou Not sayin its not, but i must say i do have a guitly spot for some early Elton John, so i love both songs, but in a confused state(ahem) i may mistake the opening riff of one for the other, but not in a bad way
never ever touch crap like that took the beach boys we need them when will this generation stand up to the adults and say no we wont take that crap its killng us off get your money somewhere else we want to live and have a family of our own its time for the kids to stand up but nar they dont have the smarts to save their own lifes let alone other kids
I can feel the freshest coldest water rushing through my legs like the biggest discovery of someone that soonest discovered, for the love of all that all that is holy, there is something still worth crying for..... worthing laughing about.... it was there for an instant.... he saw it.. Dennis tapped into it.... And we can all now laugh and cry and (re)discover this JOY.
yep, im in Irealnd but have the channel, so the documentary was pretty great, BBC 4 has some great stuff on the weekend, if your into your classic rock and the likes its a real treat
I have an original vinyl and the cover jacket is signed by Dennis when I met him on a signing tour in a Peaches (remember them?) record store in Michigan in 1977 -- anybody have a guess as to the value?
Dennis was a terrific person, musically and all around. Poor guy had his problems, tho. I have been a fan for 30 years and I still miss him. RIP Denny.
Although I'm not fortunate enough to own Pacific Ocean Blue yet, I've listened to everthing I can find here. I feel like I've found buried treasure. Sonically and melodically amazing
It still is a collector's item. Don't let it go. Denny was a friend of mine. He gave me one of the first copies from the first pressing I hold it as a precious gift from a fallen friend. There's no amount of money that could get me to part with it. You should treasure what you have in the same way.
I remember when I bought this album, when it first came out and my friends were like what he heck are you listening to, now I just grabbed the new CD and played it agin for the same gang and they flipped out. Denny & Carl RIP
Everyone has their own demons or issues they are trying to outrun in their minds. Most artists find their inspiration within themselves because of personal issues. These artists seem more real to others since their artistic outpouring is sincere and from the heart. Based upon your insensitive comment, you must have your own issues to deal with. Because if you were a well adjusted human being you would have compassion for those with personal faults and not publicly ridicule them.
I totally agree. Most people are ignorant towards the beach boys thinking all they are is fun in the sun and cars etc. Their music was quite spiritual.
Although never officially credited, several sources have documented that Dennis Wilson of was a co-writer of the song. According to Wilson's biographer, Jon Stebbins, Wilson claimed that he and Preston spontaneously collaborated on the words to the song at a party.
I still miss this guy after 25 years. He was a cool guy who wasn't afraid to be who he was no matter what. He never looked down on anyone either and he made better music than a lot of these overrated people. Hey Denny, we still love you!!!!
They're finally re-releasing Pacific Ocean Blue in May! I can't wait to hear this. For a while, Denny seemed to sieze the baton from Brian after he went off to his bedroom for all those years.
mojoman801 - you're right, once Brian Wilson retreated from the band, it was Dennis who provided the best material, without a doubt. He also co-wrote "You are so beautiful" which was a huge hit for Joe Cocker. Listen to "Baby blue" on L.A. (Light Album), it's stunningly beautiful. Dennis was foisted on Brian and Carl by their mother because she didn't want him left out of their group. They didn't want him because he couldn't sing. He sure as hell made the most of what he had though. Talented guy

There is a mystical quality in the Beach Boy's music that is quite unique in rock music.
Just listen to this track or Surf's Up, Feel Flows, etc.
The listener is transported to another level and somehow becomes closer to God and the beauty of nature.
Some kind of higher force inspired their music with a timeless beauty is inspirational and uplifting to the spirit.
Genius.
