IRISH PEOPLE: The Treaty will be DAMAGING to all smaller countries, in terms of representation. Lets not beat around the bush, it will not be the end of the world but why vote for it, there are no benefits. Yes Europe has been good to us but that does not mean we should sell ourselves politically. Our representation will be halved! READ ARTICLE 58 AND 112-3 VOTE NO.
The problem with referendums is that people put Natinal interests in front of everything else. For example France's rejection of the previous treaty was in fact a referendum against Chrirac!
A pan-european referendum wouldn't work; the votes would still have to be counted for each individual country, as each country would have to pass the bill through their national parliament.
Even if an overall majority in europe voted in favour, if the majority in Britain was against, then Britains parliament would be legally unable to accept the bill/treaty/constitution/whatever was being voted on.
the same is true of most countries, certainly in Germany it'd be un constitutional.
Ok, Europe needs referendum, but not in a national level. Countries look after their own benefit without thinking of the impact on others. Also, a referendum will have the EU stagnated, when quick actions are needed.
perhaps because at least half of Europeans understand it? The first spoken language (as a native language) in Europe is German and while it's a beautiful language I (like 2 thirds of the Europeans) don't understand it well. Le fait que nous puissions tous communiquer ensemble n'est il pas plus important que la langue que nous utilisons pour le faire?
The EU is a positive thing just because it needs to go above governments interests to gain the trust of the people, this expose some of the bad things nation states do, but does not mean that they won't do the same in future.
I personally compare the EU as the statement of Churchill about Democracy: "Democracy is the worst political system ever invented, yet, it is the best we can hope for." Things need to be changed!
"Democracy is the worst possible system, bar all others" is what he said, IIRC. More democracy in the EU would be good. The council of ministers and other non-directly elected parts that are not good. However, they're probably needed for the balance of power between states and the centre. IMO reform is possible such that all are directly elected, but states retain their power. Not easy, though.
I liked the comment at the end of the CO2 reduction part, "provided that other countries do the same." Right, because we cannot do it alone or because the economy will be too badly hit and loose competitive advantage against China? Shame! In the mean while the ice cup is melting exponentially due to its incapacity of reflecting the solar rays! If people don't do something governments won't do anything. And they tell me that Hydrogen is not usable!!!! Liars!!!
Hydrogen is a storage medium. You have to get the power from somewhere first. Geothermal, wind, wave and tidal can dramatically reduce the requirement for fossil burning. Nuclear fission is and always will be stupidly short-termist. Fussion would be good (Hydrogen to Helium?), I'd think, but isn't viable yet. It works a tiny bit, but more work is needed. You could argue it's underfunded.
Nice! Beside the fact that market competition is always imperfect, the prices of its failure are paid by consumers and the power to control it is transferred to an unelected business community, who is now-more-then-ever dependent to international market forces - such as the last mortgage crisis, generated in the US (by private banks) and completely independent from European policies.
The European Union was, is and will be always great idea! Together we are very strong but in my opinion Reform Treaty it's a one step in back-EU should have a President and Union Foreign Minister and EU's flag and anthem should be a official symbols of EU - it was earlier.
It`s interesting that this `great democracy` that the EU pretends to be is amply shown here as they will not publish anti-european parliament sentiments. My last comment (no bad language!!) was removed.
So much for a new democracy where everyone can air their views!!
Don`t be fooled by the `feel good` style to this video. They have suppressed free speech, allowed mass illegal immigration for cheap labour, and are destroying the fundamental tenets upon which true democracy is founded. The E.U is EVIL, and like all evil empires our thoughts, feelings and hopes for the future have been suppressed and ignored. Do I need to say more? BEWARE!!
Liberalized air transport and a sustainable environment. I wonder how the EU have planned to combine these two...! It is all symbolic politics all the way. Cheaper phone calls and "no" use of passports - What Europe wants is DEMOCRACY. I feel especially sorry for the new member states that just have got out of one union and are now joining a new one. Peace in Europe is not a result of the EU, the EU is a result of the peace. Just another empire in the history that doesn't have much legitimacy.
Irealnd is the country that has enjoyed the most from the Structural Funds and from being one of the poorest it has become one of the richest country in the last 2 decades. If they vote against the the new treaty it would look so nice, wouldn't it?
The EU now has signed a treaty that is identical to the EU constitution that was defeated democratically by the people. Where are our national leaders on this attack to our sovereignty? The leaders of the EU want to bypass the people because they see us as stumbling blocks in their utopian project. The EU should never have become a supra-national entity taking away individual nation's sovereignty.
