  • Wait... how is it possible to surround someone and divide them at the same time without them noticing?!

  • Red Cliff? Anyone know the Chinese name? Is it any good?

  • @fl333r Good enough to make Sun Tzu proud, I'm sure. This is in my all time fav list and I speak not a word of Mandarin.

  • i think it makes a lot more sense with subtitles (and a longer version)

    watch?v=RgDYRVJQh3k&feature=related

  • why do straight run into the formation? I dont think that even the dumbest warlord would run into that deathtrap :S

  • I'm noticing technique is being used a lot more than pure aggression

  • what a spear still at 5:35

  • @weishenglol its called Ji...an older version was Ge...English is dagger axe

  • Does this movie come with English subs?

  • @SpadaccinoLuciano yes it does, i just watched it

  • haha 9:45

  • best battle tactic i've seen

  • @uragon120 imagine you were an infantryman there...whould u get inside the formation or distract the formation so they brake??

  • in dynasty warriors 7 they explain it its a formation used by the chinese to intrap and destroy the enemies morale. sorry idk the name only how it works plus hte objectives for it in dynasty XD

  • This is like the Chinese version of Jackass.

  • typical asian cinema bullshit, where they make everyone look like superman but good battle non nonetheless!

  • @simranjeet36 eh, same with most Hollywood films with superheroes and modern day protagonists that are somewhat invincible? There's nothing different, just learn to appreciate.

  • Zhang Fei sounds like me on the toilet.

  • 9:45 kekeke

  • ps i don't see how this is a phalanx. it's nothing like it. Phalanx had big round shields with sarrissas in angles to deflect arrows.

  • @pfl95 Your right. It's a red cliff phalanx and therefore it's 50x more awesome than a normal phalanx.

  • @pfl95 Actually, according to the the movie I believe this is supposed to be the "Turtle formation".

  • Hey, can anyone tell me if the Han military (like this) had the same military system as Qin? Qin had very disciplined troops with a strict system. But i'm not sure if Han had the same

  • Chinese didn't have phalanxes but they used jis. it was a spear with two blades pointing out. it was as long as a sarrisa. They do not have the same formation as a phalanx but they have a simlar formation as the Roman spears. Wide shields with jis. The film is missing crossbows which is a big factor in an ancient chinese army. The only military historically thing that is right about the film seems to be the heavy cavalry..

but its still a pretty damn good movie. I only noticed the error now

  • @pfl95 yeah, i agree with the crossbow. i think at that time all east asians except japanese used crossbows. i also heard that koreans at that time used mostly crossbows rather than bows.

  • @pfl95 your right, the chinese didn't have phalanxes. the spear with two blades pointing out you've mention, i think they called it the dagger axe. its mostly a halberd that is design to bring own enemy by hooking their legs or to bring down enemy on horse back. The film didn't have crossbow but they do show them later in the movie when Zhuge Liang invented the repeating crossbow. the movie is pretty damn awesome with all the many famous battle scenes.

  • but still, it is pretty entertainin indeed. it is just a movie anyway.

  • i have no idea why they put that battle scene in the movie. that battle didnt exist nor did that formation. i agree that chinese had their own battle formation different from west or other cultures, but that formation is just rubbish i think.

  • @choithegreat1

Alexander was historically accurate (It depends how one sees gaugamela though). but it sucked.

  • @pfl95 well, i think Alexanders formation focused on arms of service. so if u hav palanx, use alexanders formation, if not chinese.

  • thumbs if you came hear coz of fruit ninja

  • ...I don't understand why the attacking army just ran into the trap and circled around for ages. Why didn't they just bullrush one of the walls? They're only one man thick, they'd puncture a hole easily...There's being unrealistic and epic, and being unrealistic and damn idiotic. This is unrealistic and damn idiotic.

  • I love how everyone is arguing about how horses would act, weight of shields, etc. Every one of you fails to notice that they are using a phalanx in this film, a GREEK military tactic with no real evidence of use in China or anywhere outside of Europe for that matter... but it's cool keep arguing about war horse psychology and spear physics.

Bottom line is it's just a movie, and this scene is awesome just like the rest of the film. Enjoy it for what it is.

  • @uselessfaith greek or not, this is real history. The yin yang strategy was actually used, maybe they just represented it with a phalanx formation

  • @uselessfaith Spear and shield formations have been used against cavalry wherever there have been spears, shields, and cavalry. The phalanx is only one particular type of spear and shield formation.

  • @uselessfaith Exactly, there are a lot more, like which general would jump out empty handed to fight a whole group of armed guys. This is supposed to be for entertainment, stop arguing. If you have the time, go design the light saber from star wars.

  • @uselessfaith The chinese always used it, but in a more advanced form.

  • @uselessfaith Phalances were widely used by all repectable armies around the world. That was what formation warfare was all about.

  • @liebstandarteadolf

Chinese didn't have phalanxes because they didn't have any sarissas. but they had SIMILAR formations. the tortoise formation did exist though (not the roman tortoise). But this skirmish doesn't seem to be real

  • sign that nigga up for the NFL

  • tHE ONLY REASON YOU WHITE FOLKS ARE HATE'N ON THIS IS BECAUSE THERE'S NO FUCKING "WHITE HERO IN IT" AND IT'S NEW. Now go bitch about FAGGOT LORD OF THE RINGS WHY DON'T"CHA"

  • @Gamersquid1 mate i'm white i like it when they made it they said its not gonna be realistic and i accept that so stop being such a retard a learn to spel werds proply stoopid

  • @jordansmallperson Ok, I'll sign right up, for school that is, so I could learn your grammar and spelling skillz! LOL!

  • 3:53 gives the order to send in the bad asses.

  • Guan Yu: I use my spear.

Zhao Yun: I use my horse.

Zhang Fei: I only use my hands, focking noobs... Gaylords...

  • This film is made based on historical events. You guys should read up on The Three kingdoms >.>

  • @yonglian1997 yes the story is based on historic events but not everything is "all" accurate and their there for entertainment value. You know it's just a movie right? Directed by hollywood/international action director star John Woo....

  • WHAT YEAR WAS THIS FILM??? IT LOOKS SO FUCKING FAKE!!!!!

  • @bhenno2009 You mean this aint the original war fotage ?

  • @Flossengeber Please tell me you're a troll and not a stupid cunt

  • @MeRcYimRichBitch You srsly dont know what sarcasm is do you? I post this to a guy who said "this looks so fake"

  • @bhenno2009 you think movies are real life?

  • i feel so bad for that one guy in the end. he knew what was coming

  • THIS IS RETARDED!!!!!!

  • @HectorAchilles777 this is great and entertaining

  • wauw this movie is full of asian fake ass shit lmao

  • @Afvall Like 300, amirite? To be fair, this is based on a legend (which was based on real history) and like all legends, there are plenty of exaggerations.

  • @Afvall u jealous bro? umad bro?

  • 9:42 forever alone XD

  • What's with the bizarre changes in frame rate. At some points it looks like a made for TV movie, at others it's slowed down so much it could be a porno. I'm sorry, but this is why Chinese movies don't make any money worldwide. Barring Li An and a few others, Chinese directors need to fucking die and stop disgracing the world with their shitty movies.

  • @gaozhi2007 to each his own preference, although i can think of alot of movies worser than this.

  • @husseindss how was this a bad movie?

  • @XxEntaroAdunxX i never said it was a bad movie, i actually find it as a favorite. i only said 'i can think of worse' just to prove that it was one of the better ones in comparision.

  • @gaozhi2007 What would be a good movie? M. night shamalyanadingdong's the last airbender?

  • @gaozhi2007 *applause* pasty-faced Internet tough guy... pathetic, self-hating, white-worshipping chink...

  • @dennisjiewenliu Your comment is riddle with logical fallacies. Just because I am criticising Chinese directors does not make me self-hating. Just because I am ripping a movie I don't like doesn't make me a tough guy. I'm not trying to bully anyone into believing the same as I do, merely expressing my opinion. Also, I am neither "white-worshipping" nor a "chink," though one could make the argument that by your use of a racial epithet, you are a racist.

  • thế mới là kế chứ!!!

  • 9:41 -- Defeating an entire army using the turtle formation? Costs a dozen men. Seeing the expression on that last soldier before he got roped? Priceless.

  • i call it turtle shell formation :>

  • That second warrior was MUTHUFUKN HAWED!

  • for some reason this gets funnier and funnier every time i see it..

  • @Beanz526 whut..evuh man.

  • Hmm, so the shields were too heavy for charging cavalry, but a rider being dragged down could topple them...

Wait, am I trying to be reasonable on the Internet? I'll shut up now.

  • Three Kingdoms 2010 was better than this! The casts were much more realistic!

  • imagine zhang fei playing football...

  • @darkzxcb70 Haha! I thought exactly the same thing lol!!!

  • Lets just sit here and watch these 4 guys fight. Best strategy in the world or what?

  • I like the part where he bodychecks the horse

  • in every Asian movie there are always the "Boss" characters, like how they excel over groups of soldiers, the single fighters who take on like 100 at a time....

  • @michaelc3211 Umm... Achilles?

  • This wouldnt work in real life, thats all I would say

  • @ManHomeless Actually it does, horses will naturally seek a pass rather than turn head and run back wards when there are other horses behind them. When their survival instincts kick in they will find whatever passage and run through it when they are being blocked

  • @ManHomeless This movie was based on a historical event. It already happened in real life.

  • lol quit stabbing your self Guan Yu what a since of humer

  • that last guy is funny xD

  • @KnowImillian , okay no need to CUSS me. Dang...

  • so unreal this movie is . the charater that act in this movie are so funny and stupid and its funny that charaters like guan yu , zhang fei uses spear .etc while cao cao generals uses small swords ? they should really improve on this ..

  • 1st generation of Shu. AWESOME!!! 2nd generation of Shu. LAME!!!

  • Good luck organising a Chinese army of peasantry into anything remotely as cohesive as that formation :/

  • China still trips horses with wires when making a film, you can see it in a few places here, most obviously in the first few seconds and at 7:15.

It ruins the whole film for me. Disgusting. They dont care for the horses at all, you can tell that but the rough way they ride.

  • this fight scene is gay

  • 3 things

-why didn't the horses jump over the shields?

-am i the only one who thinks 8:40 looks like orlando bloom?

-6:50 he should start playing rugby

  • @WulvPawz

-because if theres a path open then horses will go there instead, its psychologically what horses would do

    -he does

    -yes

the army was forced into the trap because

    1. if they ran away, theyd be mowed down by arrows

    2. if they stopped theyd be mowed down by arrows

    3. going into the paths created and into the trap was the only choice

  • When you see those "General killing all those troops one by one... did u or did u not notice that the soldiers are still standing there with their shield and watching... they are learning and hence Win-Win to the Zhou Yu's Army. They are good fighters... however they bear to see the enemy die so many and yet when a few of their men died... they are concern like hell... so Irony~~ General lolz

  • I don't care if this was supposed to be realistic or not, this was totally awesome.

  • 9:44 made me laugh, I thought the battle was kind of stupid but good humour.

  • 9:44 made me laugh, I thought the battle was kind of stupid but good humour.

  • naaa una bosta mucho dragon ball!!! ademas no podes zser tan estupido como para poner a todo tu ejercito dentro del dispositivo enemigo!!!! LOL

  • I loved watching this epic. Visually amazing set designs. Oh and Takeshi Kaneshiro is a sex god.hmmmm

  • @KnowImillian asians do make visually amazing movies. I love them.

  • So contrived and unexciting.

  • talk about being retarded. smh.

  • SO UNREALISTIC!

  • Why doesn't the other army attack instead of just walking around

  • 0:20 guys strolling casually in the back giving out arrows. :D

  • makes you want to play dynasty warriors

  • ahhhh the bs american dvd release cut all the good parts damn them. Some of the scene here i didn't even see in the dvd i bought.

  • The best war scene that I've seen in any movie!

  • the guy at the very end lol

  • Guan Yu and Zhang Fei were equivalent to 10000 men.The generals with similar strengths also existed in other China Dynasties in history like Huo Qubing&Li Guang(Han Dynasty),Han Shizhong(Song Dynasty), Xue Rengui&Su Dingfang(Tang Dynasty),Chang Yuchun(Ming Dynasty) although not as often getting depicted in literature works as those from the three kingdoms

  • Ah Romance of the Three Kingdoms, its where the Art of War played its best, aside from Japan's Senguko Jidai.

  • guan yu should be in assassins creed :D

  • @tyrrant87 He should be right where he is.

  • play mt eden escape while watching this very cool.

  • 3:56 gan ning being boss

  • LOL. Guan Yu......

  • @Blazzerrx4257 Shu and Wu VS Wei :3

  • what are the two armys names

  • @blazerrx4257 The Red and Green or should we say the one in the middle who launched arrows and all that good stuff is the Shu and Wu armies and the Blue is Wei.

  • Han Army > Roman Legion

  • I feel sorry for the redshirt guys. :(

  • their so small..

  • 9:41 hahaha

  • I feel like playing Dynasty Warriors now :3

  • Bagua formations designed by Zhuge Liang are nearly impossible to recognize from ground level up, in the midst of chaos and confusion it's fairly easy to fall for these traps.

No it's not a Dynasty warriors rip-off, read romance of the 3 kingdoms.

  • His smart

  • The one with the fan standing beside sun quan or sun ce or maybe sun jian is zhuge liang i think thats his name :D

  • Who the fuck is the dumbass who sends his own army inbetween another army, just to get trapped in their insane defences? Retard ALERT

  • @kangaroopig

You see it in a bird's eye view. They see it on the ground, and it looks just like a regular line until they got in xD

  • @kangaroopig True! These people know nothing about ancient warfare.

The cavalry could just trample the lowly shield carrying infantry and route the archer.

  • @kangaroopig unless the opposing army wants to battle! and get their ass kicked. this battle reminds me of battle of carrae without the arrows destroying the turtle defense.

  • @kangaroopig they went in cos they didnt see them from fog and when they did it was 2 late

  • @kangaroopig Well to further expand, there were 3 choices,

    1. Charge forward as they did.

    2. Stop moving, and continue to get killed by the archers.

    3. Retreat, and face the wrath of Cao Cao.

  • @kangaroopig They didn't see the trap. They were pursuing a small group. This group created a dust storm by dragging tree branches with their horses. This cloud made them run blindly into a trap.

  • @kangaroopig They didn't see the trap. They were pursuing a small group. This group created a dust storm by dragging tree branches with their horses. This cloud made them run blindly into a trap.

  • Comment removed

  • @kangaroopig there was a dust cloud infront of the army so they couldnt tell they were chargin into their turtle defense and than while the saw the enemy they were already under rain of arrows hittin them so if they turned around that would hav been smart move so some would live but instead they didnt hav time to do so they chos to charge through the opennin that they left openin but sadly goin into those openly sealed their defeat

  • @kangaroopig You gotta know the context. How could the the general see that formation from the top view? It's like the soccer players having different viewpoint from the audience.

  • @kangaroopig that guy

  • @kangaroopig

What are you talking about, that is the entire concept behind putting Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) right between a bunch of nearby hills in Afghanistan, that's what the US Army and USMC infantry are doing there getting their shit rocked on a regular basis, thanks to our intelligent West Point educated Officers....

  • @WunderDoob this movie came out before the battle

  • @kangaroopig can't believe it is a real event

  • @kangaroopig honestly the whole logic of this battle is questionable

  • @kangaroopig haha it was 200 a.d. they probably didnt know about this formation yet

  • @kangaroopig

My friend if you saw the movie, the wei army was chasing an raiding party through a sandstorm, when they got through they were disoriented due to the sand storm, they were then bombarded by volleys of arrows further increasing thier confusion, they just kept moving and before they knew it they were trapped, classic Sun Tzu menouver, whom wich the Sun clan of the Wu army are descended from.

  • @kangaroopig first of all if you watch the whole moviethey were actually baited, second, when masses of cavalry are charging there are no way to turn back, so the only thing they could have done is to charge forward

  • GuanYu is such a badass >:)

  • The fat guy who charges in without a weapon and tackles everyone made me lol pretty hard.

  • @Balthic

    I believe that's ZhangFei.

He's the third brother in the Romance of the Three Kingdom.

  • @Balthic he can enter superbowl as his own team

  • epic

  • Really you would not send your army between the enemy lines that have a tight defensive formation haha :)

  • endin is funny.

  • yeah those single guys are rip offs from dynasty warriors haha

basically 5 guys taking on the army by themselves

  • 9:45 wtf

  • Comment removed

  • Why can't I just watch this in my history class instead?

  • @QwertyBoyFTW Because this has nothing to do with history. Were this to be any real enactment, Cao Cao's army would have crashed headlong into the first wall of shields they found and proceeded to spearhead to the center of the formation and spread out from there, dividing the defending army into three; and not nonsenselessly going into some sort of highways or whatever the director was trying to demonstrate as a formation.

  • @Joltie A reasonable method but a costly one don't u think? As shown in the movie and would happen in real life, they charge the first wall and suffer heavy losses from the enemies arrows forcing them to divide the force up or face complete annihilation, which was shown in the movie, since the archers range is facing where they come from, they are force to move ahead to avoid being shot down, and the only way ahead is those "highways" where their enemy traps and defeat the Cao's army...

  • @CLC1456 Not really, because you are trying to rationale a situation which was made for a movie. It is shown that the archers are behind the shield walls. It is one of the worst ever ideas to use a shield wall against a cavalry charge. A shield doesn't prevent a horse to from bashing into it with his chest/chassis and suffering no damage at all while toppling the soldier and breaking a formation (especially when the whole wall is being charged upon).

  • @Joltie Nice argument. But let us not forgot those are not swordmens with shield but pikemens/spearmens that can thrust their pikes/spears on top of their shield. The cavalry charge against such a shield wall with pike/spear can be deadly to any horses. Although in the film, they didn't take advantage of such a possibly ability... So ur theory of cavalry charge against the shield wall for this film stand strong and effective. Nice! ^^

  • @CLC1456 The "outer" shield wall (the one facing the enemy) being compromised, those shields holding on the other sides of the rectangles would have no purpose at all, and with no way to make some sort of defensive formation, would be killed quite rapidly. The uber-archery and massive casualties are just film entertainment. Like the formation, they make no sense whatsoever. You can see loads of arrows flying at infantry body level (Which is impossible as archers in formation fire upwards)

  • @Joltie The whole formation is suppose to be a flexible defensive formation designed to trap armies... It may look unrealistic in this film.. i agree with u on that but in history something like this was use in real life in ancient china and effectively slaughter a lot of enemies. although the real version was able to have access a lot of man-power compare to the film since in ancient time it easy to draft a lot of soliders so ur reasonable right that the formation sucks in this film... Nice! ^^

  • @Joltie I agree with u about the archer firing position in the film to be impossible but surely in real life the general wouldn't wait for the enemies to get too close to their walls but fire quickly when the cavarly at range which i assume should be way further back away from the wall than what the film portray? Archer are very effective in causing a lot of casualities against light-armour horses. It been fun having this discussion ^^ thanks!

  • Truthfully, imo, this is nothing short of "The Iliad" of Chinese cinema! The characters were fantastic, and the battle scenes were the perfect blend of epic and beautiful! John Woo has created nothing short of a masterpiece, with this, imo.

  • Who in their right mind charges Guan Yu?
