Great Video! Love your technique so much, I think I'm going to use my brayer to roll the clay on my foot now. Love it! This technique should help some people not trim so much till they trim the foot out of the bowl, right? lol Love the trimming bat suggestion as well. I think I have some material just right for this so I'll give this a try as well. Thank you sir for sharing, it's much appreciated!
Well.. yea if yu raise the foot first.. even if you want to do it the trditional way you need take less from the floor of the bowl.
I just throw the bottm about how thick I want it.. curving up from the center, so when I trim I trim the outside bottom I can make the curve follow the the interior contour... Bu that's just me. Fun to improvise ... hu?
@newearthclaypottery I tried this yesterday and it worked great! I had a hard time getting used to my brayer wheel going backwards and not forward since my wheel was going counter clockwise. I hope that made since. I think I will do all of mine this way from now on... I had plenty of clay at the foot which was great! Thanks so much again for sharing. I also tried some pelon on my bat. Glued it down. Well, that didn't work so well. I need something more rubbery I guess. I'll try that again.
Right... It's a piece of 1" thick fairly high density foam; but you can use carpet pad too... glue it to a bat. Mine fits into the recessed AMACO wheelhead I've used for 30 some years
wow, i must try this! Isn't it great what a little messing around can get you? However i just can't depict what you are using as a bat, is it a part of a hat or a placemat or rug?!?!? haha whatever it is, very creative sir :)
Hi there. I have trouble getting my bowl to stay in place. I have been using the clay logs on the side, but they either get too wet, and stick to my piece, and ruin it, or get to hard, and my piece flies off. I can see that you are not using anything to hold it down. Are you just putting pressure where the bottle cap is? Thanks!
Hi again.. i was asking if your wheel was woven.. pressed a wrong key.. it looks like your wheel is made from some sort of woven material if i'm right?..
It's so great to see different ways to achieve a similar outcome, and this is a very fascinating technique. I was wondering, is the pot leather hard when you do this? How does the clay's dryness impact your method?
A little softer than leather hard; also if,as soon as you begin to 'raise' the edge you lay down a little water on bottom of pot rext to where the clay is rising up it will help the rolled clay stick ti bottom of pot, especiallyif you waited a little too long and clay a little dryer than you want.
Very interesting technique. It works well! And the Bat you have there looks like a foam pad... can someone make it out of the kitchen no slip grip padding you put in your cupboard shelves? Thank you for sharing. Happy potting, Aaron > Bonsai/Potter

Well yes, I keep a variety of lids on hand; however I'm also using a dense foam bat.
You can use a piece of foam carpet pad too.
I cut mine to fit down in my recessed wheel head; but you can glue a piece to a bat then reserve that bat just for trimming.
Find a material that has good grip.. not too hard.. not to soft; experiment before you glue.
I wish you the best,

@87carminaburana
if you mean the wheel 'head' upon which sits the bown..... No! it's a fairly high density foam.
The rel rubbery carpet pad material (not the cheap soft foam stuff...) also works well as a trimming head; grips the pot well.
Hope that answers your question.
Wish you the best.

Dryness makes it harder. Too wet and clay sticky.
Thanks for watching.

interesting....what is that thing you have your finger in while trimming? Is that just a cap from a soda bottle?
avidgolfr 2 years ago
@avidgolfr
yes...you got it.
I keep a series of these different sizes all the way uop to an old 78RPM record and much smaller than one pictured.
helps distribute the pressure so don't poke through the pot bottom.
