  • Awesome job. You know how I know this video is old?? The door slam noise from AOL. Keep rockin!

  • i had no issue learning this song from you...sounded great..i got my getter tuned just fine...thanks ...bob

  • hey bro the last part goes 7,9,11,12,11,9,11,9,open. thats the order of the frets youll have to figure the strum pattern. im not good at teaching.lol

  • i hate it when it needs different tuning. I only have one set of strings right now

  • I agree with @star2b4u... it's awesome your taking your time to teach other's!

FOR FREE!... there are good people out there...

  • I hate when my g string is tight...

  • this guy gives tooooo much technics not needed for any beginer...... get off the net learn how to play the song correctly first!!! then learn how to teach.... worst video ever award go to?!?!?! this dumb ass

  • easy way to tune to d is pitch it with the 4th string

  • hey guys everyone wants to bitch...hey if you already know how to play why are you here? An if you can give a better lesson post a vid!! Good lesson man!!

  • -LIKES- the flashy TV back there x)

  • This video is 100% correct. I have the official sheet music and it all matches.

  • G strings needs to watch a live video and find out it is played DADAAE. I learned this song in ten minutes its so easy and I play it at shows all the time.

  • this lesson sucks!!! its supposed to be played in open E tuning. DAEAEE. plus the "sliding" section is played 7-9-12.... then 7-9-9-7-9-7-open on the D string. plus seriously why would u give a guitar lesson when u r not even sure how to play the song? come on man!

  • if i had to learn this before I die i would never make it haha but thanks man

  • You think you could get the acoustic version of Meant to Live by switchfoot

  • kewl thanks

  • have to buy new ones lol

  • broke my f*****g string

  • @Westreekid A good way to avoid that is to tune it to C-G-C-G-G-D, that way your G string stays the same and you're loosening the other strings.

  • @Westreekid me too. dammit

  • Believe or not but the b goes all the way up to an e. The d also goes up to an e

  • FUCK, I CANT FIGURE OUT THIS RETARDED ASS TUNING! fml and FUCK this song!

  • @burtontoker Use an online tuner like the one at ultimate guitar and take it easy. You'll learn. It's a simple song really.

  • drop d or drop c tuning? or is it custom tuning?

  • " electric tuner, tune to the tone "

You left out tune it by ear :P

  • dude could you poss make a tutorial for the solo of this song? that would be absoulutly fantastic, you really nailed the rest of the song and did a GREAT job teaching it. I try to get the solo off some tabs i see on line but idk its hard...

  • best vids on you tube.. plus you let us tune to your drop d.. thanks much.. great karma should be yours.

  • Hey man thanks alot ...u reely helpd me with this vid .. u r a really good musician ..keep it up man.

  • string broke...

  • ZOMG i cant believe i learnt this ! dude you make everthing so easy to learn TVM!!!

  • first off dude you rock i just repicked up my gutair for the first time in 5 years and ive already learned an awsome song and this will be my second and second it seems in every goo goo doll song there is some kinda string that will break ive nottced liek the d patteren in iris one of those was a pain in the ass

  • Totally broke a string on that a. Haha.

  • @kmackkilla80 Jonny actually changes out 2 of his string when he plays to prevent this

  • ive gotten to the point where i can tune this song perfectly without this video:) im so happy!!! its just matching the strings with other strings:) easy breezy:)

  • the next time you are in Minneapolis, lemme buy you a beer. This helped tremendously. Thanks man.

  • Thank you. The tuning you de-code so generously enables nailage of alot more than just the ever elusive "Name" by the Goo Goo Dolls. Thank you for the keys to a prairie's worth of great songs I could never get right. And I get a lot of songs right. Writing my own stuff is what I live for, but when I render someone elses work, I do love being indistiguishable from the original recording artist, guitar-wise anyway. Audience always sits up when you nail one tune after another too. dankadude

  • the best tutorial subscribed...

  • i love this song :)) this was really helpful! thanks!!!

  • haha i love it .. your talking about the g string breaking .. mine did exactly then haha

  • Who is your guitar signed by?

  • any way to play this in standard tunining. im having a hell of a time trying to tune it...g string is killa!

  • The tabs I found wanted me to tune my B-string up to an E. I was having none of it. Thanks for confirming my scepticism.

  • you are a faggot. And thanks

  • Just busted my G string trying to tune up again. Sad day. D:

  • Hey, I've been trying to find someone who can teach me this song, you nailed it. Thanks a lot, ill be comin to you for lessons. Keep it up!

  • wat would this song sound like on a standard tuning guitar?

  • if you keep breaking your g string you could always put a b string where the g string goes and tune it down to an a just like the other just a suggestion :)

  • well crapp xD my string broke....cant play this till i get another...oh well.

  • could you do the guitar solo for this song? thanks

  • is there any way to play this without tuning the G up to an A? i get scared because i'm afraid the string is gonna snap and it has before

  • dude teach how to play needle and the damage done.

  • Your the reason i was able to learn this song. great teaching man.

    keep it up.

  • your guitar sounds great. What make/model is it? It has a very clear, bright sound but isn't missing any bass.

  • Holy cow, thank you so much for this. I have wanted to play Name forEVER. I'm still ridiculously new at my guitar, so it'll be a while before I can do this I bet, but you really make it seem easy - I'm so excited to be able to play it. :)

  • I first saw this generous instruction video in early 2009. One of my guitars "lives" in alternate tuning DADAAE now. Thank you so much. (Reznik actually uses DAEAAE I have observed since elsewhere on youtube. so what. dadaae has opened up a new world, as I've already posted here. go figure that that's alway's more to learn. oh well. I'll get to daeaae when I get there. Meanwhile, regarding dadaae, Thank You Thank You Thank You! you're a good instructor dude.

  • man thanks alot! its great to know i can come on you tube and learn off from people like your self....keep it up

  • dagnabit meant to say DADAAE.

  • best of all, is the new door DADGAE alternate tuning opens to you for original composition. your new stuff not only rocks, it will confound and confuse your best friends/worst competitors. when cornered, admit only what they already suspect, and tellm only 5/6th's of the truth. "ok guys it's DADGAG." then get out of there son. this may be the best military secret ever entrusted to you as a guitarist. Here's one more tweak. Capo F# to brighten further the already brilliant;) Enjoy.

  • The breadth of newly accessible songs and genres is breathtaking. From classics like "Moon River" to more contemporary rock stuff, "Life Is A Highway" and "American Girl" even a an old country standard I've always wanted to nail and deliver at the campfire, "Blue Eyes Cryin In The Rain."

  • Great video bro keep it up!

  • show!!

  • the top string should be B not D

  • thanx alot ....great lesson!

  • owsem

  • My Username - Click it to see more

  • man thx so much for this video its definitely one of my favorite songs and bands

  • its awsome you take the time to spread music lessons for free most places iv been looking online are 12 bucks a month just to teach you how to read guitar tabs its rediculous... your brilliant

  • Fo the part where you slide form 7to9 9to 11 and 11to 14. I find it easier, specifically if you guitar is not a cutaway, but either way it still feel easier to me to play on what would be the b-string normally, 2/4 4/7 7 7 7 7 7 then for the part he is having trouble with in the video, 2/4 4 4 2 0 2/4 4/2 0. It sounds the same, and since you are already low on the neck before you play that part, the transition to it is easier too.

  • awsome vid it really helped

  • you mean you went two steps above it, two octaves is 24 frets lol

  • thank you so much dude

  • thanks for the message, glad to help! Please dont forget to check out my website freeandeasyguitar com for lots more lessons, take care

  • LOL...I just Broke my string!! Damn it!..It really sucks because I was actually looking forward in learning this song..Now I have to wait to get new strings!! But Good Luck in your tuning!

  • i am sorry! lol im so sorry, i tried to warn everyone lol

  • tune very slowly, tune a little then let the guitar sit for a while then continue

  • I know I'm gonna get flamed for this, but this is the wrong tuning. The correct tuning (from lowest to highest) would be D A E A E E, that way when playing the verses, you can strum any string while playing the correct route note ans still have it sound good. with this tuning, strumming an open 4th string kills the sound.

  • good advice man, i just started playing when i learned this, ill have to try that way, may be much easier for beginners

  • u remind me a lot of my friend sam he plays guitar too and u kinda look like him and great lesson btw i just cant get my g string to a

  • cool!, yeah its tough without breaking it, be careful and go slow

  • i actually learned a good way to play it in open tuning

  • wassup man lovin the website..... looked for this lesson and you popped up

    so here we go

  • thanks a lot dude, i apprecaite that!

  • great vids man, you're extremely helpful. never played guitar before until i watched a couple of your vids and then i went out and bought one haha. im not that good yet but i cant put it down :) but i have a question. at 7:00 you start sliding your finger from the 7th fret to the 9th and so on, and it sounds bang on. but when i do it, i can hardly notice any change. why is that?

  • i appreciate that, i am glad to help, have you checked the tabs in the info box? the changes will sound better as your practice more, make sure you are only sliding on that one string and that you are trying to focus your strum on the bottom strings? try that out bro

  • Funny. Had this song in the masses on my Mp3 player. Think to myself as it comes along every so often," I think I need to learn this song." Search for it, click the link. Guess who it ends up being. haha. :p Great vid again.

And yea to your post 17 hours ago. Don't stop making vids. You're awesome at it.

  • thanks buddy, thanks for the message, glad to help! And dont forget to check out my website freeandeasyguitar com for hundreds more lessons, take it easy

  • uh dude.. how long ya been playin..?? and uhm how on earth are u able to understand those tabs...?? I am only able to understand simple tabs unlike this one...

  • hey buddy about 2 and a half years, after you see thousands of tabs, you pick up on little things, they used to confuse me too, but after a while you get used to taking tabs and usually modifying little things to make them sound more like the song, just stick with it and keep practicing!

  • wow!!... that's fast... 2 and a half years??... thanks for the advice and spiritual support... ^_^ by the way lessons are great!!... just another question though do you get paid...?? I mean why are you doing this for free..??

  • thanks a lot man, glad to help, i do not get paid, i guess every person kinda looks for a way that they can help others and use it to influence people, this is my way of trying to help the world i guess

  • hahaha... wow what a cause goodluck with the influence thing... and by the way be carefull with swine flu... ^_^

  • man you sould so do a cover on this song

  • ill see what i can do buddy

  • thanks

  • what guitar is that it sounds no nice

  • its an alvarex ad70sc

  • great lesson, i have a small issue though, i think raising the D string to an E may make it sound good too. D A E A A E I think is the tuning. There's a chord tab on UG with 5 stars, i think that's the one. Otherwise, your lessons are always well done, i'm more of an intermediate player but they even help me sometimes, so keep up the great work.

  • hey buddy, thanks for the input, i havent tried it that way, it may sound better, thanks and take care bro

    aaron

  • lol i've played this song a million times and now i can say i've finally snapped my G String!

  • good deal, take care

  • Thanks I never knew you had to change the tune, I just played it in standard tuning. Thanks again for the help. Also you were more descriptive then anything else on youtube

  • no problem, glad it helped :) good luck and keep on rocking man

  • Some people are cool and some are not; your cool. great teaching.

  • haha thanks a lot buddy, glad it helped

  • DUDE

    THANKS SO MUCH!

ive been trying to figure this song out for so long!!

  • no problem man, glad to help

  • thanks so much for posting this. I'm relatively new to guitar (yr and a half), and learning this song was one of my big goals. Thanks for posting a do-able version

  • glad to help buddy, no problem

  • you did a great job! i've finally started to learn how to play this right with the help of your posted video. thanks man! you're great!

  • thanks, glad to help you out, take care

  • your amazing i love this song ive always wanted to learn how to play it

  • thanks, glad to help

  • how do u tune ur guitar w/o popping any strings?

  • go slowly and if you have a string that has to go up more than one tone or one step, then go halfway then let the string set for a minute or two, and then continue to tune up

  • for a guitar tuner:

in google type: digital guitar tuner

in the first hits, there will be a downloadable tuner that uses a microphone to tune... I have one standard on the laptop, so actually the same as a tuning-device and a really good one. I tested it with a standard tuning devid.

Just mentioning, maybe someone could need it

    cheerios

  • great advice, thanks for the input, thats very helpful

  • No problem,

still glad about the iris-song of goo goo dolls... Didn't know it was so simple... Gonna try to get some people excited to so we can try it with 3 guitars together. Might be fun

You're allright btw, for an american ;-)

  • hahaha well thanks, i do what i can

  • i did too, i put a capo on the first fret to avoid it.

  • good deal man

  • my string broke too..haha

  • gotta go slow lol

  • yeah string broke... =)

  • haha i read this and laughed, not cause its funny but ibecause i know the frustration that causes, but yeah u gotta be real careful lol, take care man

  • good lessons, thanks

  • thanks, glad to help

  • Dude, thanks. Ive been messing with alot of goo goo dolls covers lately, and the tuning completely screws me up every time. Now i have a system for tuning down to any Goo Goo dolls cover based off of what you showed in this video.

    Thanks a shitload.

  • hey glad to help you man, take care and good luck

  • who signed your guitar

  • jason michael carroll

  • can you post a video with a very easy song with only 2 tabs or something?

  • everything changes, is an easy song, or viva la vida by coldplay, take a look at it

  • whoa dude, who signed your g-tar?!? :D

  • jason michael carroll, country artist i met at the raleigh airport, we were both flying to nashville, sat with him, he was a cool guy
