google "armstead snow motor" and watch a old man in 1924 wearing a bowler hat with tie and having a ball in very deep snow. This concept is now used for power company drills in boggy areas. It is a truly special purpose vehicle. The invention goes back further than that.
hey guys, who cares if there is a swamp or not in the US, texas, etc? This car is made in Russian plant ZIL (Zavod Imeni Lihacheva). It's not american. Noone cares about swamp in Texas here.
This actually isn't Russian engineering at all. The "Spiral Driven Machine" design was created by Mr. E.M. Tucker of Oregon, USA. The main downfall of this machine is that it is very difficult to get good flotation out of it. A machine like this is much heavier for the given surface area than a similar machine with tracks. Not a problem on dry ground, not too much of a concern in mud, but when it comes to snow, these machines preform somewhat poorly.
That would be the first design of this particular type of Spiral Driven Machinery, which was actually originally known as a "Corkscrew". The first design for a spiral driven machine however, dates back to 1914, and is the forerunner to the modern "Tucker Sno-Cat".
Well, it's fully amphibious since the screws function as pontoons, it can't get bogged down in mud and snow (something that's historically been pretty important to russia), there are no tires to burst or tracks to throw. It can sidestep, so parallel parking's a breeze. Due to the direction the screws rotate, when it starts to tip over the driver just has to slam the throttle forward and it rights itself (it could capsize very easily in reverse though).

It had never gone further than prototypes coz the fuel consumption was way too high. Pretty good idea though
djnjoy 4 years ago
as a fact this vehicle was created for lost spacemen rescue operations and there was need to produce it in hundreds.
Fuel consumption isn't high, coz the vehicle is powered by two 70 h.p. automobile engines.

I hope that they improve it, cause it's still inferior to the tanks, but very amazing russian engineering.
