Yes, this is part of the reason I learned to detest middle of the road anything. The funny thing about this song, though, is that some of the people who admired this type of song were critical of 'pop music'.
Not actually having heard this song, that I can remember, I always thought it was "I'M a pink toothbrush, YOU'RE a blue toothbrush". Now I know better!
Dear Mr Bygraves, My name is Dianna Collen I lived at 72 Lake view, Edgware Middlesex England wad a friend of Christine we spent many hours of fun around the lake. I have been living in Australia now for 20 odd years, in N.S.W. I was singing your tooth brush song to a small child. I googled you. What a thrill, a trip down memory lane. I hope you are keeping well, and if poss say Hi! to Christine, we also went to Pitmans Collage together.
Here in the US, having a pink toothbrush means you have to go to the dentist to be checked for gum disease. It was the slogan of Ipana toothpaste that if you have "Pink Toothbrush" it may be a sign of gingivitis or other periodontal diseases, requiring immediate attention, but that such things could be avoided by regular use of Ipana, which was specially formulated to prevent gum disease.
BTW, Max Bygraves never became a big star over here, but he did appear as a guest on the Jack Benny show.
im just about to turn 20, but when i was little, i had a tape called "Hello Children Everywhere" and it was full of GREAT songs, and this was one of my favourite songs along with many others from that tape. I feel like i'm about 2 or 3 again!!!!!!!!
1.......3..... hahaha that still makes me laugh :)
This reminds me of Childrens Favourites in the 50's and 60's, anyone else remember? This song was always being played. But I can't STAND Max Bygraves, sorry!
My nan adored Max Bygraves (for some reason!) and this so reminds me of her dancing around her living room - 25 years ago at least. Lovely memories. Thank you.
I've been looking for this tune for 30 years ! Remembered the first verse and chorus - so good to hear it in full again. Now my kids can enjoy the whole tune. I think this song was written well before Max Bygraves. I remember playing it on an old 78 speed record back in about 1970/71. The record broke since those 78's were very brittle, and I remember being devastated ! Those records date back a while - I wonder who the original writer/singer was ?
According to 78Junkee and his 78 record in his video, Max recorded this on 78 in 1954 and if you watch 78Junkee's video you will see who the writers are from the 78 record label :)
@Xpinger This version has the 'wolf whistles' removed thats why there is a 2 sec gap after 'nylon bristle' - I have the song on an ep from 1958 - listen to the 78 version & you will see what I mean.
@Xpinger This remastered version has the 'wolf whistle' faded out after Max sings 'It makes my nylon bristle' no doubt someone from the PC brigade got to it !
This song just brings loads of childhood memories back. I used to listen to it with my sisters in our bedroom when it was raining outside....it made me feel happy then and it still does....:)!!!
just wanted to say, my mum passed away in 2001. she was one of the lucky kids picked to sing on this song. a guy came to her school in london and auditioned them. i always knew the song existed n luckily found it n listened to it with her before she died, she hadnt heard it for years. im sure it was recorded in abbey rd studios but, before the beatles n she said how cool it was to get the day off school too! so, although i like to listen to the song, it's a bit sad too. R.I.P my Mum.
Fab, I've been trying to find this song for months even looking on here, but no joy until now, I've been telling my partner his was the song for our wedding...... I was only joking, but they don't think so!!!!
