  • I believe what you have made here is known as Stephenson Valve Gear rather than Walschaerts. Still very nice.

  • @hiesler It is in fact Walschaerts, Stephenson valve gear is very different.

  • @hiesler It is indeed Walschaerts. Perhaps your belief that it's Stephenson comes from seeing the eccentrics? If the designer wants to incorporate Walschaerts completely within the frames then he has no choice but to use an eccentric for the "long travel" of the valve via the radius rod/expansion link rather than the return crank when this gear is used outside the frames. Other features of Walschaerts in this excellent animation include union link & combination lever (for lap & lead).

  • Well done animation!

Would also like to see at slow and very slow speed.

  • You work on Kings!! your my hero

  • Would it be possible to upload a slowed down version of this gear?

  • You know what, as a toolmaker I do see all of this in my minds eye. Perhaps use of this will too lead to a dependence that will end with the loss of ability. Sorry, but it has happened many times before with dependence o technology.

  • Very interesting! It's always puzzled me why the GW insisted on tucking all the valve gear between the frames where it was highly inaccessible. I note that Stanier abandoned this when he went to the LMS.

  • @JimTLonW6 Indeed, although I feel outside valve gear would ruin the lines of a Castle class.

Stanier's Duchesses had the valve gear on the outside, with rocking arms to drive the inside valves. Just goes to show that Stanier still took ideas from his Swindon days.

  • Beautiful.

  • Where did you get reference for this? Do you think I'd be able to find similar reference for a triple-cylinder locomotive like the LNER A1?

  • @Anarchemitis I looked at the real thing! I work with a Castle so I knew what goes where etc.

  • Great work.

You just made me look like an amateur.

  • Another interesting look into the inside motions and how they work. And tremendous animation aswell.
