@tonder762 remember that as a car is approaching you being filmed on a telephoto lense they appear to be moving slower - when it flips you are seeing the spin of the car on its own axis which you are seeing side-on which appears faster than seeing it coming toward you. What I was asking, though, is how could you fake this? The debris, dust and crap flying around would be far too complex to fake effectively and it would be obvious that it was faked - why would you go to the trouble?

Not really, he wouldn't be able to do anything to help - they have marshalls for that - and either way he's thrown away his position in the race for something that was really an accident. Motorsport is dangerous, but it's all part of the sport. And besides, this is exactly what roll cages, racing seats & harnesses and crash helmets are for - the outcome of this will have been quite different to the same thing with a normal road car :)

Actually I wonder how many people know that the more times the car barrel rolls, the better it is for the driver. The kinetic energy of the crash is dissipated thru the rolls, which is a good thing since most serious injury/fatal racing accidents are those where there is little or no rolling. Thus most of the energy of the crash is transfered to the driver, leading to serious injury or even death.
