Any character that is on a team that defeats Bowser in challenge mode will have the option afterwards to get a boost in all stats by pressing 2 on them

@dragonfire3800 You probally found out already is that they kinda work like steroids. everything about their description is enhanced. The star means they have defeated Bowser in story mode. Think of it like this as well: No star is past(regular), star is present( advanced, stronger, better)
