Call me ignorant, but watching a video about common English mistakes made by an American seems a little bit redundant, no offence :p. "Much different than", "like", the upward "do you understand what I'm saying to you?" tone. Meh, just nit-picking, good work regardless, doubt I could do any better; I really wish people would get these ridiculously simple mistakes out of the way,
Great video! I'm rather obsessed with English. The mistakes that are serious pet peeves of mine weren't on this list, but it would be excellent if you covered them in the future!
It bothers me when people confuse the word "ironic" with "coincidence"; also, I believe the word irregardless is completely useless. Shall I disregard something and then regard it again? That sums up irregardless. I have the loose and lose problem too but I'm weaning myself off it. It's a frustrating mistake.
You helped me a lot. i'm learning english for 3 years, i'm in an english class and want to study in the uk. your tips will certainly help me to improve my writing :)
Loved this video. My husband is South African and his use of incorrect language and/or grammar really irritates me. I'd point him to this video, but that would probably upset just him. Great post!
One more thing about less VS fewer: if there is only one object, then it should always be less. For example, I've been correcting my friends' grammar for less than a year.
Too much text messaging and instant messaging has made us illiterate! I hate when people leave off the "ly" for adverbs, as in "OMG, it came out perfect"!! It's perfect-LY people! Drives me bonkers!!!
man r ur teeth white!!! what do you do for them? like do you whiten them urself or do you pay to get them whittened? please write back because i would like my teeth to be as white as yours
@makeupbydel I do drink dark sodas (lk diet coke). I just try to brush after a lot of diet coke...but I also do whitening treatments, which is probably the sole source of the whiteness :D
Are you an English major? Not saying your advice was bad, very good indeed, ^_^ Now I'm self-conscious that I'm going to make a mistake just typing this to you! For the most part, I already knew what you were speaking of here, so that was pretty awesome. My English Composition teacher still keeps marking things wrong on my papers though, so evidently I'm doing something wrong, lol! Anywho (not a real word, I know), great video dude!
French is my first language and I would FAIL miserably at any of these tests!! here are examples three=tree,bathroom=bat-room,theatre=tea-ter,southern=norturn,southern=southurn and yeah Imoved to the South!! drives my hubby nuts LOL!
@Addictied2Makeup Good question. I have studied it for years. One, I was a political science major (with an emphasis on mid east studies). Two, I love languages and wanted to learn an "eastern" language with a different script. I also wanted to learn the language to make myself more marketable :D I have waaay too much energy I suppose :D :D :D :D
Haha I love the sentences with the pimp and prostitutes. My papers for English classes I had in University were always less than stellar but when they were Science related papers they were always excellent lol. I guess Science professors were more concerned about the facts and citation of the facts to prevent plagiarism more than proper English, or they themselves weren't so great at "proper English" lol.
@prettyblissful Haha, you are very right. My science major friends always tell me the exact same things :D Teachers make mistakes all the time...oh well, we are all humans. Your comments are all too true!
@caughtyapeekin lol. Beauty isnt skin-deep. :D :D I am going to make self-improvement videos every once in a while. Just check the title before you watch :D But I certainly appreciate and respect your viewership. -Michael
One that my high school English teacher beat into our heads... in matter of performance and health use "well" and in everything else use "good." So when someone comes up to me... I will tell them I'm doing well, and when I tell someone how dinner was I will say good. :)
@TheSublimeAgent I wouldn't mind seeing a video on how to be a good presenter /public speaking .I think this is an area where a lot of people (myself included) struggle
I'm a latino and I live in Miami. I don't know if the spanish influence is what creates this problem... but about 90% of people in all the schools I've been to...including high school and college say "supposably" instead of "supposedly." And it pisses me off o' so much...lol
Great video, you should make more of this kind. English language is the easiest one in my opinion, I´m a spanish girl living in Germany and german is a MF# hard language to learn :S from its nightmare grammar until (till?) the pronunciation!
@cleetv1 Hahah, damn typos. Thanks for sticking up for me. The m and n keys are too close together in my opinion. Haha, I guess I should have checked the video more closely...people are very critical :D
Good job, Michael. Surely you know you know that I of all people do not have a problem with seeing you do different types of 'improvement' videos. I find them interesting & like to make these types myself. Enjoy the upcoming week!
@losprophet Oops, I totally didnt realize I had a typo in the word. Haha. The m and the n keys should not be together haha. Thanks for pointing this out!! :D
when your typing do your a voice in your head saying the words and what voice do you hear ? whoa --- i have yet to hear a prostitute use correct English (that one made me laugh)-elephant and roller coaster- i is so confused! i am being bad- lowers-Dr and children!!! haha i love this type of thing- when you type fast do you type backwards- it was fun- x shelly (do you really teach arabic)?
@RedDragon45 Haha, I actually had three specific people in mind, and poor Michelle was not one of them hehe. I don't like her skills, but I like the production quality of her videos, plus she seems like a nice person (which is great!)
loved this segment..command of the english language is a passion of mine...the shirt and the backdrop???? I have not seen a shirt like this SINCE i saw a man with no SENSE..:)
@123cyril1 I think there are a few accepted forms of the word "falafel/falafil" I used the more closely transliterated form. Thanks so much for watching. I will definitely check out GG. -Michael
@sslilac You are totally right about this, Word is useless!! Most of the time "than" is correct (because it is usually the correct choice). I will make a follow up video to this one and discuss then and than...I will be thorough on this part. Just remember that then usually only refers to time expressions. Thanks so much for watching. By the way, three languages!! very impressive :D
a lot of people tend to write "a lot" as a compound... and use "farther" and "further" interchangeably...love the shirt btw (plz annotate the designers again like your first vids) cheers.
@rhyanova I will definitely include these two mistakes into a follow up video. This shirt is an older shirt I got from Grail (when they were in the height of their popularity). Hehe it's rather colorful. Thanks for watching, and I will try to annotate next time :D
@johnlovesbridge Yes, it has both !! It is a really beautiful shirt up close. I have had a few people try to steal it from me, but I will not be having that!!
@mybodysayinletsgo Hehe, I am glad someone else agrees. It just doesnt make sense hahah. Thanks for watching :D :D I am very glad that you commented on this video...considering your expertise!
@TheSublimeAgent I remember the one time, I submitted my phonology hw with the word "shift" missing the f! and I repeated it three times in the same paper!!!
Great video! It made me appreciate all those years of grammar class! One spelling mistake that drives me crazy is when people misuse "your" and "you're"! See that one a lot ; )
"He was green, black, and blue." -- People may forget the comma or be hesitant to put it because in french you don't put it before "et" when enumerating ( = and). It may be the cause.
@khardala This may very well be the case. I have had teachers say they don't want commas before "and" and I have had teachers say that they demand it. Oh well haha :D Thanks for commenting...it was insightful :D
Lordy I'm always bad at they're and it's...even though I know the differences, but when I'm typing they are the most common ones I make....I heard the most common error is between then and than. I personally think that English is the most #@!! language and feel sorry for anyone who has to learn it...it's like patchwork where they made it up as they went along. Oh by the by I tagged you ;-P
@kokolaroo I got that tag. I think I will definitely throw some responses together for it. I read through the questions, and I dont have answers for about 10 of them, so I will have to print them out and really put some thought into it. Also, I agree about your mini English rant. haha. :D You and your cursing :D
Very interesting video! My biggest problem as a non-native speaker (although I have taught English as a foreign language and I also do translations besides being a MUA), has always been phrasal verbs. I still have to think twice before choosing the correct preposition or adverb. Oh, and I usually make the loose-lose mistake too, LOL! :))
@PasiphaeTheQueen Thank you so much for sharing your own experience. You are right, as a second language, phrasal verbs can be tricky. Hehe, I am also glad that someone else has a problem with loose and lose. Tricky words.
@bettyhatesobama Absolutely! Thanks so much for watching. I am glad I could help a tad...but definitely do not be afraid now :D It's ok to make mistakes :D
Phew, I can't even tell you how many mistakes I make. When I have something to say, (I talk fast) and if I forget a word, I will just throw an afrikaans word (I'm from South Africa-that is my native language). Then when I'm done my sentence I will go back and try and translate that word. The fun part about that, is my Canadian friends know a lot of afrikaans words, LOL. For some reason I can't remember the word "basket" so I just say "mandjie", all my friends now know what a "mandjie" is,lol
@JPhillippeMusic Hehe, Thank you for sticking up for me. I am glad I could be a tad bit entertaining. I should have not chosen the word falafil...because it does have two accepted spellings..and I knew people were going to jump on that D: hehe
@kapkone Hehe, I usually choose my preferred form of the word "falafil" ... it is more accurately transliterated in my mind. Both spellings are acceptable I think. Thanks for commenting. :D
This is so great! The mistake I come across the most is "I could care less" and it drives me insane! You are native speakers, why don't you realize it makes no sense to say you COULD care less when you want to express how much you don't care?! It's "couldn't"! Or am I wrong and it doesn't make sense yet is something that became just a normal phrase? I'm always confused when I read it.
Michael!! I'm falling in love with you more everyday!! Being a linguist in Russian and English languages, this topic is so important for me.. It pisses me off when a native English speaker makes such stupid mistakes, which I myself would never make learning English for 15 years... Like "etc." - et cetera.. Most English speakers say it like - exetera... I know, I might be too exacting. But, people... speak the language respectfully!!!!!!!!!
I love you for making this video. I've been meaning to make a video like this, but have been a bit lazy. It drives me nuts when people don't conjugate verbs correctly (as in "I seen" or "I've went.) Ugh! Also, a reallllly common one is "_of" rather than "_have." Then there's "then" and "than." And there's always the people who say "This is a picture of Bob & I." :( I'm glad someone else understands the English language. <3
I like how you switched it up for this video! I think a big part of beauty is being intelligent. You know what bothers me though, as a free lance writer I have to adhere to AP style writing and of course it goes against the grain of proper grammar. For example the "comma" rule changes completely when writing AP style! You just can't win with the English language! lol
@alyssagdawg I totally agree (so many people were irritated that I made this video...and I am very "whatever" about it). By the way, I totally agree with you about the AP style. Fortunately, I have never taken a course or been in a situation that required AP. Thanks for sharing :D
I really love this video. I was in an English essay writing class last year and we went through all those problems, but I have forgotten a lot of them. (Please don't critique my comment! Haha,,) I really love English and this video reminded me of the teachings I need to go over in my notebook. Thanks! Really love these videos.. it's cool!
@TheWonderfulEgg Well, I am very very happy that it could refresh you a bit. You are right, it is very very easy to forget the little things :D Thanks for sharing and I am glad you liked this (or this type of) video :D
Am I supposed to use "hung" or "hanged" when I speaking about the past tense of "hanging a picture" ? I often hear this said both ways, even on news broadcasts where you'd think they would know how to use the English language.
Hi, In your second example explaining the use of they're, there and their are you using the word proclaim in the right way? I have never heard it being used that way so I am curious but this was a great tutorial.
@MsPrettyClaudia Thank you for pointing this out. Yes, you can use the verb "to proclaim" when claiming a type of title. Although one cannot usually proclaim a crown at will, it is still an appropriate word to use. :D I tried to pick silly sentences to keep attention.
I cannot stand when people make these mistakes! It seriously drives me crazy because it makes no sense to me! LOL...you should do a clip about how people always say "in regards to" when you should say "in regard to"...I hate that! And no I'm not writing this gramatically correct because I just woke up and don't care at the moment haha. Love you.
Call me ignorant, but watching a video about common English mistakes made by an American seems a little bit redundant, no offence :p. "Much different than", "like", the upward "do you understand what I'm saying to you?" tone. "The company, like many located in Los Angeles, hires few people."
My rule for agreement is to take out the part between the commas, and see if it still makes sense. It works pretty well haha.

@LoveForAAR I hope your rule can help others who have this problem. Thanks for sharing :D

English is my third language. Obviously, I am not perfect at English, but I simply can not get "then" and "than" straight! AT ALL!!!
Not even my Word spellchecker helps with this.
sslilac 1 year ago
@sslilac You are totally right about this, Word is useless!! Most of the time "than" is correct (because it is usually the correct choice). I will make a follow up video to this one and discuss then and than...I will be thorough on this part. Just remember that then usually only refers to time expressions. Thanks so much for watching. By the way, three languages!! very impressive :D

a lot of people tend to write "a lot" as a compound... and use "farther" and "further" interchangeably...love the shirt btw (plz annotate the designers again like your first vids) cheers.
rhyanova 1 year ago
@rhyanova I will definitely include these two mistakes into a follow up video. This shirt is an older shirt I got from Grail (when they were in the height of their popularity). Hehe it's rather colorful. Thanks for watching, and I will try to annotate next time :D
TheSublimeAgent 1 year ago
I like your shirt. I thought it was a tie dye, but on closer inspection it was flowers. Cool.
johnlovesbridge 1 year ago
@johnlovesbridge Yes, it has both !! It is a really beautiful shirt up close. I have had a few people try to steal it from me, but I will not be having that!!

@mybodysayinletsgo Hehe, I am glad someone else agrees. It just doesnt make sense hahah. Thanks for watching :D :D I am very glad that you commented on this video...considering your expertise!

@TheSublimeAgent I remember the one time, I submitted my phonology hw with the word "shift" missing the f! and I repeated it three times in the same paper!!!
mybodysayinletsgo 1 year ago
Great video! It made me appreciate all those years of grammar class! One spelling mistake that drives me crazy is when people misuse "your" and "you're"! See that one a lot ; )

@aurora2581 Hehe, I will definitely include those two words into a follow up video to this one :D Thanks for watching :D

"He was green, black, and blue." -- People may forget the comma or be hesitant to put it because in french you don't put it before "et" when enumerating ( = and). It may be the cause.
khardala 1 year ago
@khardala This may very well be the case. I have had teachers say they don't want commas before "and" and I have had teachers say that they demand it. Oh well haha :D Thanks for commenting...it was insightful :D
TheSublimeAgent 1 year ago
Lordy I'm always bad at they're and it's...even though I know the differences, but when I'm typing they are the most common ones I make....I heard the most common error is between then and than. I personally think that English is the most #@!! language and feel sorry for anyone who has to learn it...it's like patchwork where they made it up as they went along. Oh by the by I tagged you ;-P
kokolaroo 1 year ago

PasiphaeTheQueen 1 year ago
@PasiphaeTheQueen Thank you so much for sharing your own experience. You are right, as a second language, phrasal verbs can be tricky. Hehe, I am also glad that someone else has a problem with loose and lose. Tricky words.

TheSublimeAgent 1 year ago
Phew, I can't even tell you how many mistakes I make. When I have something to say, (I talk fast) and if I forget a word, I will just throw an afrikaans word (I'm from South Africa-that is my native language). Then when I'm done my sentence I will go back and try and translate that word. The fun part about that, is my Canadian friends know a lot of afrikaans words, LOL. For some reason I can't remember the word "basket" so I just say "mandjie", all my friends now know what a "mandjie" is,lol

JPhillippeMusic 1 year ago
@JPhillippeMusic Hehe, Thank you for sticking up for me. I am glad I could be a tad bit entertaining. I should have not chosen the word falafil...because it does have two accepted spellings..and I knew people were going to jump on that D: hehe
TheSublimeAgent 1 year ago
would that not be Falafel lol!!!
kapkone 1 year ago
@kapkone Hehe, I usually choose my preferred form of the word "falafil" ... it is more accurately transliterated in my mind. Both spellings are acceptable I think. Thanks for commenting. :D
TheSublimeAgent 1 year ago

AllaMillerify 1 year ago
Haha, sorry, but I thought of another one. :) The most common one I hear is "the reason is because" instead of "the reason is that."
RocketDomiLane 1 year ago
I love you for making this video. I've been meaning to make a video like this, but have been a bit lazy. It drives me nuts when people don't conjugate verbs correctly (as in "I seen" or "I've went.) Ugh! Also, a reallllly common one is "_of" rather than "_have." Then there's "then" and "than." And there's always the people who say "This is a picture of Bob & I." :( I'm glad someone else understands the English language. <3
RocketDomiLane 1 year ago
I like how you switched it up for this video! I think a big part of beauty is being intelligent. You know what bothers me though, as a free lance writer I have to adhere to AP style writing and of course it goes against the grain of proper grammar. For example the "comma" rule changes completely when writing AP style! You just can't win with the English language! lol
alyssagdawg 1 year ago
@alyssagdawg I totally agree (so many people were irritated that I made this video...and I am very "whatever" about it). By the way, I totally agree with you about the AP style. Fortunately, I have never taken a course or been in a situation that required AP. Thanks for sharing :D

I really love this video. I was in an English essay writing class last year and we went through all those problems, but I have forgotten a lot of them. (Please don't critique my comment! Haha,,) I really love English and this video reminded me of the teachings I need to go over in my notebook. Thanks! Really love these videos.. it's cool!

Am I supposed to use "hung" or "hanged" when I speaking about the past tense of "hanging a picture" ? I often hear this said both ways, even on news broadcasts where you'd think they would know how to use the English language.
SusieQ1828 1 year ago
@SusieQ1828 "Hanged" is used when you talk about someone hanging themselves and "hung" is used for everything else!

Hi, In your second example explaining the use of they're, there and their are you using the word proclaim in the right way? I have never heard it being used that way so I am curious but this was a great tutorial.
MsPrettyClaudia 1 year ago

Love you.
