imagine if they would have recorded a new album after this and didnt split-up they would have been as big as duran and spandau,,,,,,they were just about to explode,,,,,,,,,,so sad
Sylvian is his own biggest critic the stuff he did with Japan was a learning period and he has moved on the stuff he did with Japan in my eyes was brilliant but i do think he has progressed. I saw Japans second from last concert in Hong Kong broke my heart to hear they were packing it in. Japan David thanks for the music
Despite the quality, this is incredible. Japan with Masami Tsuchiya and Sandii. They seem very celebratory. I was only 2 when this happened, so it's really amazing to get a chance to see something like this.
OMG - never seen these videos before - rather shot to pieces the view i had of the band - never realised they had a sense of humour - just thought they were serious and slightly moody musicians. Still i love their music and listen to Japan most weeks for the last 20+ years. BEST band ever IMHO. Saw them live in Brighton doing Ghosts etc... Loved them so much..... & Sandii & The Sunsetz! Which i'd got into them earlier on....
Sylvian's dismissal of the track, and the JAPAN back catalogue is a defence mechanism, if HE hates it, you cant hurt him by criticising it!! I am CERTAIN he only wishes he had mixed the original better, or made more of an effort on the lyrics - Moroder (the producer) said that Sylvian LED the recording sessions and he found it refreshing not to be working with an air-headed musician!! David WE SALUTE YOU!!!
Who cares about the quality of the video, it's just awesome to see. Thank you. I know this track has always been a thorn in sylvians side, but i love it.
For all us Japan/Sylvian/Karn/Jansen/Barbieri fans - this is of immense historical value!!! End of an era, quite emotional really.. One wonders what might have happened had they chosen to stay together? And yet this meant the start of their respecitve incredible solo careers. Anyway, cracking performance of this great party song. What a way to finish! Doesn't matter that the quality is poor - this is pure feeling. Many, many thanks for posting!!!!
holy crud just discovered this by accident, what time we live in. I was just getting into them as they were splitting up. Found out later, they'd played my home town two nights in a row. Always a great regret I never got to see them play live, the most underrated band of all-time.
Never had the opportunity to see them live in concert to young wish I had, years later fond memories of being in the back of a taxi in Tokyo pissed singing "Life In Tokyo"..Oooh live out your fantasies!..Peace & Love Derby O Gillxx
It's very impressive that this has been posted. I have been listening to Sylvian and Japan since I was 15 and am continually grateful that all this material is on YouTube. Unfortunately, the live version of Riverman from 93 has been taken down ( a masterpiece ), so I will have to wait and see if it finds its way back.
Life in Tokyo INDEED! Wow!! Where do you find it all??! Japan was CRAZY popular in Japan! Insane atmosphere...almost 'beatlesque'? OK - let's say, just a 'little' crazy (dancing bear et al;) yet david and mick somehow pull it together followed by a quick exit! (I think David ran away perhaps). Fascinating, thanks for sharing.
I can't believe I've just watched that!!!! OMG: I went to the Farewell gig in Liverpool, round about October 1982 and that has just brought back SO many memories for me. I even remember the trousers David Sylvian was wearing!!! I've still got my programme, in pristine condition and will never part with it. Thank you very much for that. xxxx
Never dreamed I would be able to see footage like this. Thank you!

What was the deal with the dancing panda? I guess the kitchen sink was unavailable. Interesting stage presence, a very large group.

I wish he wasn't so harsh on everything he did with Japan. Do your solo thing but respect your past as to where its led you at least I'd say.
