In 1982, my buddy invited me to go with him to see this kid play at a little local club in Forest City, FL called Spirits. He told me the kids was 12 (probably 13 by then). I expected to see a kid mimicking something he learned. You know, a gimmick to get people to show up. What I saw blew me away. The kid had soul, feel, and would jam for hours if they didn't keep interrupting him with the rest of the band! Between sets, when the band was drinking, he was playing pinball. Derek's awesome!
