When babies are born, we "rough" them up a bit so that they cry and inflate those little lungs with air. We want them to get mad and scream because it's good for their lungs and circulatory system. I don't agree with leaving the baby on the scale like that, but the rest is very common.

Nurses are told to be rough with babies. Not extremely rough, but this nurse was doing just fine.

This wakes up the baby's senses, and makes sure they're all working properly.

This nurse was doing nothing wrong.

Babies are tough. They're born tough.

Their heads get smashed coming out of the birth canal. They get squeezed.

This roughness is nothing for them.

Then I guess I had a bunch of really BAD nurses when my children were born...they actually supported their neck properly when picking them up and didn't flop them around like they were a chicken. Treat my child like that and you will have one pissed off mom yelling at you and then filing a complaint. They do tests to see if the babies senses are working, flopping them around while measuring them and leaving unattended on the scale doesn't help anything!!!

They're squeezed/smashed through a tiny birth canal. This baby was not being harmed. Go ask any neonatal center in a hospital, they will tell you that they are trained to treat babies this way. Obviously the parents didn't think it was too rough on the baby or they most likely wouldn't have posted the video.

Ive been at lots of births as a childbirth educator and nurse. and i am shocked at the way this beautiful baby is handled and left unattended on the scales. This is not standard practise in my country. There is no need to be so abrupt in checking reflexes or doing standard procedures. If that practitioner did this in our hospitals, they would most likely be abused or even hit by the babys dad. however after having said that... What a beautiful, precious little girl

Locke never cried at birth, until he had a vitamin k thigh injection then he cried alot once & slept all night, woke only to eat in the day then slept inbetween feeds without crying.

Never cried when she got a hep b injection at 3 days old.

There's a reason why babies are handled so roughly right after birth. They can handle it. They've just been squished and squeezed the hell out of, so much that their cranium is actually misshapen. The rough handling of new borns as they are getting measured and cleaned up is to make sure that the baby reacts as he or she needs to (to make sure nothing is wrong) and to wake up the senses. We were all treated like this at birth. We were not injured or scarred. It's NORMAL.

@michie98 A quite baby after birth can be a good thing, I never heard my son cry after birth he was just so peaceful, only until he got the vitamin k shot, he gave his 1st cry because that is when he screamed. 1st little girl cried a little bit, 2nd girl cried for a bit, not much and only after half an hour after her birth did she make some slight crys for a bottle of formula I gave her.

None of my 3 babies had loud cries after birth. 3rd baby who gave a bit of a cry after birth, with only 2 nostril flares & a few slight crys for a bottle, the midwife noted she did vocalise-moan for 12 hours straight. Had 3 temp drops on a freezing night due to a wet head. Got warmed up by midwife without the use of a heated blanket/humidicrib/heating bed/warming lights. What stopped her moaning-a simple pacifer!
