  • I know this is an old video bu it is the BEST one that I can relate my own horse issues to...my old guy has the same feet...but maybe even worse since I'm just now learning how to trim him so he can grow down and grow back to a healthy hoof conformation! I LOVE THIS VIDEO! YOu might think about reviewing some of your older ones and revisit some of this cool old stuff. I would gladly help you if I was closer to KS! :) keep up the GREAT work...you have such a good soul.

  • Great Job explaining how to trim! You are an Excellent teacher!!! =)

  • Thank you so much for posthing this! My Farrier just died and there are none within 50 miles so i need to start trimming my horses again. :)

  • Heel goed maar alleen van de Top kan het niet want trimmen tot de witte lijn is niet goed want doen loopt het paard heel gevoelig

  • @DakotaRainy Gegroet, oude video, gekregen veel beter sindsdien. Ik ben verbaasd over deze vertaling, bij hoeveel woorden in het Nederlands zijn in het Engels.

  • You are a very good teacher. Thanks for your instruction.

  • loving all ur videos but when trimming bars do u have to trim them so they dont touch the floor. as i cant tell from the angle of the hoof and the camera. thanks again for sharing all ur videos with us i have started doing my own horses feet now and i learnt from watching ur videos and also a few others. and so far so good. no problems as yet. fingers crossed there wont be lol. xxx zoe

  • @zoehannah1985 Hi and thanks. You need to trim the bars down to where you can see the white line pretty clearly and they are not touching the ground, they will taper down at an angle towards the frog. Remember the bars are really just the end of the hoofwall that comes around and V's, ending about mid point of the frog. So you clean them up to the sole in that area just like the hoofwall.

  • Great job on these videos. I have had my share of farriers who refused to educate themselves on current methods. I don't know how many times my horses have come up tender after the shoer leaves. I finally started reading up on this method and doing it myself. My horses have been barefoot for several years now and there's no where they can't be ridden.

  • ya you can trim the bars right off.

    Your pussy foot'in around it.

Slice the bar right off to sole level, no harm done. Just the way you see them now.

    Those heels are still contracted.

Nip the heel points off in line with the bars so your horse doesn't keep putting weight on them. Promotes expantion.

  • @semtech30 Really? You just cut the entire bar off? I've been pussyfooting around this majorly too, but I'm as of yet quite inexperienced. I've just trimmed his bars down and made them neater. But are you honestly saying you can just take'em off?

  • @Nizingur yes, down flush with the sole surface like she has done here in the video.

The bars offer internal suppor to the hoof not external. As they over grow and lay over they will cause pressure and pain eventually. But no don't trim them deeper than sole level.

When you get more confident you don't have to peck at them like a chicken.

I feel she's being careful here as to demonstrate.

  • Absolutely wonderful videos you have! I understood quite a few things because of your wording/explainations that I did not understand fully before :) Keep it up!

  • you have a well trained horse my horse hates having her hoofs trimmed.

  • Was she abused during the trimming earlier or nailed?

  • I don't think she was I just got her last year,

    so I don't really know.

  • agh!!! compressed from a shoe? or affected by climate , and contracted maybe if it rained for two months they would expand !

  • I love your videos!! You makes such huge sense too. I've been looking into barefoot trim now for approx. 10 years and your logic pulls everything together. You don't happen to live close to southeast Nebraska do ya?? :0) Ann

  • Thank you, I sure makes me feel good to know I"m helping folks and their horses.

  • Hi

I love your videos you have been a great help to me and do not let those small minded old fashioned people dilute the magic you have dicovered.

I know who the horses would choose!!

    Jayne

  • Thanks Jayne, you are a real sweetheart!

  • where did you go to school to learn your logic for this video

  • Didn't you read the answer to the question below. That should answer your question. How about you join that gal, and leave us good folks learning to trim our own horses, alone, so we don't have to put up with your condesending crap.

  • verrry helpful

  • Where did you go to school-or is everything you know about hooves from youtube?

  • Yes everything I know about hooves I learned from youtube. These videos are simply special effects, I've never even actually seen a horse in person. How about you, did you have to go to school to learn to be that snooty, or were you just born like that. With your attitude, you might learn the methods but you'll never have the heart.

  • By that I mean, I saw your favorites, and I watched your videos, and yes you can ride without a bridle et. But so what, the true horsemen actually learn FROM the horse, and it changes their hearts. You have a pretty ugly heart girl.

  • Sorry I'm late in answering here. Thank you so much for your kind encouraging words!!! Right now I only go barefoot, but the principles apply to shod as well as barefoot. You want the healthiest hoof posible to nail a shoe on. Even shod horses should go barefoot part of the year, espeically in the winter. Durring that time, you can get their hooves in healthier shape, by trimming. And you may find you may not need to shoe them if the trim is right.

  • Thank you for your videos.

  • Thank you northwest for watching. I looked at your page and your favorites, and watched some great informative videos as well as some funny ones,...like the guy running over himself, and the 16 part In Lies we trust. We could probably have some good discussions. I like "critical thought", it goes against the mainstream lemming mentality.

  • I think we are on the same page I am called frequently to help after someone has watched a vid or attended a clinic without proper instuction the internet has so much wrong information that is causing needless suffering I spend lots of time asking people to do their homework about these methods before they try them . thanks for caring about our equine friends

  • Do not understand why your response is not posted for all to see. Yes I do have formal training in hoofcare but my comments had to do with why you have a "my way is the only way attitude" I trim hundreds of animals not just horses each one being an individual and you blame shoes for bad bars. Did someone tell you this or is it something you found yourself I see poor hoofcare daily due to fads and radical methods that cause suffering both due to shoes and barefoot. one size doesn't fit all

  • Actually I have been trying to figure out where you are coming from and how to answer what you said.

  • Response are not posted because I kept changing my mind and removing them. And glad I did now that you have said more. I think I may have gotten the wrong impression....wouldn't be the first tiime.

  • I would agree with what you said there, and you sound like a great person, with a lot of sense.

  • I think you (also) misunderstood me, I do not blame bad bars on shoes. I blame them on not trimming them. But in this mares case every problem she has is because she was shod since she was 2 years old.

  • But, I as well as you have the right to disagree with anyone or anything I choose to, and say something about it. I've already shown that if one thing is FOR SURE, I can be WRONG. Now that's pretty much a GIVEN.

  • You may care for your horses but why on every one of your videos do you attack others who care just as much as you seem to. Just because someone chooses to use a horse in other situations you dont like doesnt give you any right to attack the type of riding or hoofcare they choose. Do you have any formal training or anatomy education ?

  • Great video! Thank you so much!

  • Nice job El! I like the Clay for demonstration. Molly's feet look a LOT better a year later!
