The engines are GM V-16 two-cycle diesels, turbocharged, and rated at 3300 hp each. However, at least two locomotives had two with ratings of 3500 hp each, for a total of 7000 hp. I'd love to know the torque - it must be monstrous.
@clay4916 When it was first introduced to the UP with 7000HP it had about the same Max Tractive Effort as a C44-9 which is about 141000lbf, but since the UP derated them to 6600hp it went down to 136000lbf Tractive effort. The one thing that i wish is that the UP would put those 20% injectors back in the 6939 n bring it back to 7000HP, now that would make it a one of a kind Locomotive. It started that way n should end that way.
@e44e33 Don't quote me on this but I believe fuel rate on a 645E engine is 6.7 gallons per hour at idle and 172 gallons per hour in notch 8. So double this for a DDA40X which would be 13.4 gallons per hour at idle and 344 gallons per hour in run 8. I'm not 100% for sure it's been a long time since I had to keep up with all those numbers but I believe that is correct.
A freshly serviced 645 would burn about 4 gallons per mile at full load. Assuming they're going 60, that would mean about 240 gallons per engine multiplied by two would mean 480 gallons per hour if they were in notch 8 the whole time. With a full tank of fuel, they could continue that rate of consumption for 17 hours. I'm sure you know they seldom ran in notch 8 for that long though. I've never gotten to see one of them (I live in Minnesota) and wish I had. 645 engines are my favorite sound.
@mrsooline The 645 in an SD40 burns around 168 gallons per hour in notch 8. Since the 645 in a DDA40X produces about 10% more power, it's reasonable to assume it would use about 10% more fuel, which works out to about 185 gallons per hour.

JM: There's one not far from you in North Platte, Nebraska. It's on display in Cody Park. Walking around on it is like walking on a ship at sea....it's huge. You could get lost on that thing.

I agree. I wish they made more for nowadays, theyre so beautiful, and they have the best horns ever. and plus, theyre so powerful, why cant UP make more Centennials and get rid of the freakin' Dash 8 and 9s? theyre decent, but, theyre everywhere and getting old.

Yes! Two EMD 645E3A prime movers, rated at 3300 HP apiece. Don't know what fuel consumption was like but they each had an 8230 US gallon tank.
