hey guys, i got a question. my drum teacher insists on the fact that i learn a flam like this: start with the one hand lower and the other hand higher (obvious), but after that, pull the hand that you started with up, so that that one is in the air. and he says that it's totally nescessary to play it like that. is it?
@allmetaliswelcome yes...this is a more strict, military, drumline type of thing...it is not ABSOLUTELY essential that you learn it to play it like this BUT,it has great benefits...it builds very quick reflexes(that will come handy in many situations...).PLUS it will give much more speed playing flams...one more thing...TRUST your teacher or find a teacher that you trust...;)
@allmetaliswelcome yes. thats the way its taught, but really its just actually preference but the correct way is supposed to let the full stroke hand come back up, to actually make it a full stroke and being a flam.
He did not make a statement at all actually. Both were questions.. And i wasn't assuming that you modded him down. its a -6 so I'm sure it wasn't just you.
It was a perfectly valid question... but w/e Not worth it to argue about it.
Think of it as two sticks coming down at the same speed from different heights. The lower one is going to hit first. But stick that is higher, is going to be capitalized when you see a flam written.
what typeof sticks are those?

here's a tip: these feel a lot easier and smoother if you pull up immediately on the up stroke or the l of the lR or the r of the rL

@Alpandaz Wait until you see JoJo Mayer play them....life changing!
Plus they make your chops sound more dramatic when you place them within the musical syllables e,+,and ah

Aw man this is so helpful! Thanks for putting these up!
I've just taught myself to play drums bashing away at a kit for nigh on 6 years without bothering to look up the rudiments so this is great.

She fails.
You can think of it as the sticks coming down at the same speed from different heights.

Isn't he holding the stick wrong for snare drum? Aren't u supposed to hold in between your first two fingers with your left hand?
codeman242006 3 years ago
are you talking about traditional grip?
cobby32 3 years ago
there are more than 1 way to hold sticks... search it up b4 u start talking
MouriRan12345 3 years ago 4
i don't understand why this is modded down. He asked a perfectly good question that unless you play drums and/or did some research you wouldn't know.
xXVintersorgXx 3 years ago 5
... he made a false statement, that's y, btw me saying "search it up b4 u start talking " is telling him to go research
p.s:
I'm not the one that modded him down, don't assume just because I am correcting him!

so you start with the higher one?
and the higher starts first and lower stick hits after?
x0kuteness0x 4 years ago
the lower stick hits a split second before the higher one
KriqK 4 years ago
Think of it as two sticks coming down at the same speed from different heights. The lower one is going to hit first. But stick that is higher, is going to be capitalized when you see a flam written.
Rl for example
R=Right hand, stick higher up.
l=Left hand, stick lower.
Lr is the same thing, just inverted hands.

nicely explained man
immanueldk92 2 years ago 2
Don't forget that just because the stick is higher, that doesn't mean it will be accented. Just thought I would throw that in their lol
fallingfromjupiter 2 years ago 4
Good point. You usually don't see non-accented flams until later, but it's always good to remember.
RIce2324 2 years ago
wow those are fast flams. thats some serious control
