  • One of the things that really annoys about some of the DVD or BLU-RAY releases is the fact that they give away the monster on the cover. I don’t understand why they don’t pay that little extra to get the original art work. One of the worst offenders being the MGM MIDNIGHT MOVIES series, have you seen the cover for THE BEAST WITHIN?

  • Back in the 80’s I remember renting movies just based on the covers, which were great and with a lot of movies (just like in the 50’s) the cover art work was what initially got you interested, especially if you missed it while it was showing in the theater.

  • I saw PSYCHO 2 in the theater, but my initial interest in it wasn't the fact that it was a horror movie. I thought "Come on there's no way their gonna even come close to the original". But I figured I'd take the risk because I wanted to see MEG TILLY!!! Happily I really enjoyed the movie and am still a big fan.

  • I am a bit older, but yes i was a teen during the peek of VHS... a trip to the video store was something to be excited about. My first movies were actually JAWS and Halloween. And you couldn't just watch Halloween whenever you wanted - you had to wait til Halloween night - it was a major TV event every year to see it. VHS was a blast and back then i loved Gates of Hell, Mutilator, Chainsaw II and Friday part 3. Get the air popper going and have a blast with some awesome horror!

  • I was born in 88, close to the end of the 80's horror boom and can really attribute my love for the horror genre to my father and uncles who would watch these types of movies on tv and video constantly. From that point on I was hooked. I can remember going to stay at my grandmothers for holidays and summer and going to either videotime or albertsons and coming back with cartoon and horror film rentals.

  • Hey Wes, loved the video. Thanks for sharing your memories. Great idea for a video. Your words give me chills man, cause I can relate to EVERYTHING you said. I was born in '76, so I'm a little older than you. I saw my first horror film back in 1983 in the theater in 3D. It was Friday the 13th part 3. After that, I was hooked. You're so right; the 80's were a magical time to grow up and be a horror fan. The memories I have of going to the movies & video store as a kid with my dad are the best! :)

  • Awesome vid!

  • Part 6 was awesome lol.

  • Where do you work Creepy Kentuckian?

  • Commander usa also gets a lot of credit..I saw tons of junk I never would have seen if it weren't for that show.

  • I got interested with jaws early on and would watch it multiple times a day that was the start but around 87 I really got into renting.I remember renting munchies and terror vision as a little kid,I remember motel hell and blood diner posters at my local store.I got hooked pretty early on but didn't start collecting until maybe 5 years ago which I'm kicking myself for now.

  • I started my Kids out on Beethoven , but in the middle of the movie I switched it out with CUJO , when I ask them to go on a beer run to the Fridge for me, I guess 4 & 5 might have been to early for that Strictly cat people to this day .

  • I was born in 1987 but the video store I went into when I was a young kid in the early to mid-90's was very much like the type you were talking back with amazing VHS box covers and artwork. So, I may have been born rather late in the game but I still have those same types of memories.

  • The very first horror film I seen though was at probably too young an age. Had a sleep over when I was like 7 years old at a friends house. My friends older sister was in her mid-teens & had a few friends sleep over as well. The parents went out for the night. So the sister thought it was fine for us to watch the original My Bloody Valentine, which had just came out. Freaked me out pretty good at that age & gave me a nightmare that night haha. Fuck everyone though keep the nostalgia thick!!

  • That is an awesome video CK. Thanks for doing it. I am 7 years older than you. But it made me nostalgic hearing you talk about the start of video machines, VHS tapes & rentals. Of course I grew up with all of that as well. I thought you might be too young to remember that stuff. That is why I am always surprised you were into the bands I grew up with like Saxon etc... That is cool you mom was into horror, mine hated horror movies haha. The movie that got me hooked on horror was Dawn of The Dead.

  • It's pretty much the same with me. Got into Horror flicks at an early age thanks to my Dad :) Not sure of the age but I do know I got into trouble with the teachers for drawing a bunch of Freddys and Jasons (haha), during elementary school ;) I wanna say around 8 or 9-years old. Fun times! Great vid :)

  • I got into horror at the age of four. I've been addicted ever since. ;)

  • I came along before cable and HBO, and believe it or not, you were a hell of a lot more likely back then to get to see horror movies, even relatively recent movies (that had run in the theaters only a couple of years before) late nights and weekend afternoons. The first horror movie I remember seeing (I might have been 6) was DR. TERROR'S HOUSE OF HORRORS. I also remember several episodes of NIGHT GALLERY scaring the living shit out of me.

  • My earliest horror movie memory is Luther the Geek and Night of the Demons

  • dr phibes and jaws was my first real horror watch

  • Great vid man

  • I was around 7 or 8 when i first got into horror.I would go to the video store in my town and legitimately spend a hr or two checking out the cover art to all the horror flicks.I can remember the advertisement for Elm street dream warriors fold out and Phantasm 2.in my town in Massachusetts we didn't get cable till 91 so the video store was a big deal and even when cable came around the video store was where it was at.The cover art to the )AWS movies and elm streets reeled me in.Loved the 80's!!

  • @dunnydundutta Holy crap no cable in your town until 1991?! I grew up in a tiny isolated mountain town in the Canadian Rockies. We got cable in like 1984/5 in our itty bitty little town. I can feel you though about spending ages and ages in a video stores as a kid just staring at covers and posters. It was a simpler time with no internet back then haha. But I loved it.

  • @oilerdiehard Yeah man,i lived around city's that had it so i was watching cable as far back as i can remember but my town was deprived till i was 10.I loved the video store, miss those days.Great memories.

  • The place we bought our first vcr had a video rent store in the back...first movies we rented halloween 4, popcorn 1993 w/ jill sholen, and some weird ass vampire movie ive been tryin to find for the longest...

  • Started with a movie my mom had when i was only 8 years old (Exorzist)..I wasnt

allowed to watch, but all know thats like ! One day my mom was going to wisit the

neighbors,so i was fast to put it in the vhs.It creeped the hell out of me.The next

movie was to be Friday the 13th.The scene when Jason pops up from the lake, today

that scene still creeps me.And the memorable scene when the priest hears the voice

    say...GET OUT...(Amityville)

  • I don't really remember what move in particular got me started in the genre. But I know the Friday the 13th series got me hooked into the genre. Your also right about the quality of the genre in the 80s. It wasn't JUST the slasher genre that was at its peak. Supernatural, Zombie, Religious, etc were ALL at their high points. How anyone can criticize you for paying a lot of attention to that time period is beyond me. From about 2000 on, its been nothing but 70s/80s remakes and ghost stories.

  • great vid dude, I think what really hooked me into horror flicks in the 80's was going to the video stores and seeing those franchises(Friday 13th, Halloween, Nightmare, etc) all lined up on the shelf. It was like the originals hooked me into it then I had to see all the sequels too! hehe. I think the first theater experience I had with horror was Friday the 13th: Final Chapter, and whew man what a great time, I remember being scared out of my whits for Feldman! Great idea for a video buddy!

  • These are the type of videos I like, It's nice to just listen to someone talk about their past. And to be honest three films that got me really kicking into horror was Pumpkinhead, The Monster Squad and Texas Chainsaw massacre.

  • as cliche' as it sounds, halloween was the first horror movie i saw ...but like you Wes F13th pt 6 was what REALLY kicked it off for me as well and ive been a horror fan since i was about 6 or 7 :D

  • I was a horror nut from a very young age. Watched reruns of Night Gallery and Thriller with Boris Karloff as often as possible. First horror movies I saw theatrically were Phantasm and Motel Hell. Later on when my family got a VCR I rented 3 to four movies a week. That's where my love for Carpenter and Cronenberg really took off. Cable television was also great. Movies like Alice, Sweet Alice, Fade To Black, and Altered States were in heavy rotation. The 80's were such a great time.

  • my dad made me watch dawn of the dead when i was like 6 or 7 or something and had nightmares about it for years, and was also afraid to go to malls....been a horror fan ever since and proud of it.

  • Very swell video, brings back a lot of memories, specifically Video Solution in Stanton Ky, that was the original video store for me. The store is still in business or at least was last year, but has sadly moved to just having dvd/blu's. The intro song was also very much excellent, keep up the great work CK, you are best.

  • my dad showed me the fury and dawn of the dead when i was like 7

  • i love the 80s movies some of my all time fav movies come out in the 80s what got me into horror or back into horror was rewatching alot of the old movies that come out back in the day good video really liked it.

  • You`re 100% right about 80`s. It was a great time to be a fan and the video stores were a lot better than what we have today. I saw dawn of the dead when I was 7 and it gave me nightmares for a week but it also hooked me. hope you make more of these videos

  • The part I remember about Psycho 2 is when that guy was fondling that girls tits in the basement. BTW that Chevy Malibu 2012 looks awesome!!!

  • Make more please Wes, it's too fucking cold outside anyway.

  • Great video

  • 1st two horror movies I ever watched were nightmare on elm street part 1 and monster squad loved both of them great stuff.

  • awesome video/idea just posted my response

  • Great video man, I hope you do more of these. I tend to think that zombies are at their highest peak ever right now. Sure, the best zombie films came from the 70's and 80's for the most part but zombies in general are more popular now that ever before.

  • memories like a rainy day boz. I had some similar memories

  • The first horror movie I seen was Christine, but the one that sticks out the most was when I was around 9 years old their was a local movie shop here in town and my uncle rented a betamax, and hellraiser from then on I was a horror fan lol. I remember my early teen years my friends would stay over just about every weekend, and we would rent a bunch of horror flicks. I guess I watched about every horror movie they had, nothing like watching some old B horror movies those were the good ole days!

  • I was born in 1992 so sadly the "Golden Era" was somewhat long gone. Thankfully my Dad had come across as bootleg of Starship Troopers in 1997, safe to say I watched it with him that night. I was fascinated with the gore, so I guess you could say I was introduced to Horror through a Sci-Fi film if that makes sense? I then began watching films like Alien and Aliens. Before my parents knew it, Hellraiser, A nightmare on elm street and Friday the 13th were being watched by my friends in my room. :D

  • Good shit man. I remember what first eally got me into it was on Sat afternoons after WWF Superstars they used to do some horror movie marathons. I remember one week it was fright night 1 and 2. The next wk it was all the Psychos. I used to record them off the TV each week. I was addicted. Fright Night is one of my fav movies still to this day because that movie is one that I remember watching that got me totally hooked to horror. I was born in 1981 so I know xactly where your coming from

  • I too actually got into horror movies at age seven or eight! I went with my neighbors down to a local video store and his mom brought us to the horror section were we picked out what we wanted to see. That night we watched Leprechaun 3, Dolls, and A Nightmare on Elm Street amd I was scared shitless! From then on my parents took me down there every friday night and I went straight for the horror section. And the cover that caught my attention was actually Friday the 13th part 6!
