Remember watching this fight and my first thought was that Benn was an ass, but its clear he was running on adrenaline and overjoyed. As we since learned it was a HUGE payday for him and basically set him up for life. He had no way of knowing what the problem was with Gerald. Remember McClelland hurt Benn BADLY in this fight and as someone mentioned was taken to hospital afterward. This fight ended two bright careers and is a sad reminder of the fragility of life. Can we not leave it at that?

I'm not sure about the commentators. First suggesting no obvious punch to put McClellan down. Then saying it might have been that one "way back there". The one that snapped his head by 180 degrees? Duh...yeah! Brilliant shot that could have put anyone down. Who was better on the night? Benn finished Round 1 looking defeated and out on his feet, then came out and gave that Round 2 performance. To come back like that takes more than just heart. It was the sign of a true champion.

I believe Benn was using some drug in this fight to enhance his ability. He was walking around for a good half an hour after the fight. Then all the sudden collapses when he has to pee. Adrenalin apparently worn off but surely after he woken up he could pee.

McClelland was unfit and not trained properly for this fight. He punched himself out at the end of the first round. His gum shield was out of his mouth by the second round. So his brain was lacking oxygen at the same time as getting punched in the head. The damage was formed from not one blow or head-butt, but constant hits throughout the rounds.

Why all this hate? Boxing isn't about nationalities, it is about two men going toe to toe, neither giving an inch. This was a truly great fight with tragic consequences. I agree that Benn showed a real lack of grace after the fight but I suspect that he was just so pumped up on adrenaline and didn't realise how serious McClelland's condition was. Benn took a lot of punishment in that fight as well, it could easily have been him these are the chances that boxers take when they step in the ring.

McLellan was clearly in trouble, and Ben only seemed interested in poking at the media and being angry down the camera, due to them thinking that he was going to lose before the fight. As a boxer, he steps into the ring for every fight knowing he might come out disabled, or worse might not come out at all. Utter RUBBISH that punches to back of the head caused GM collapse. Those 2 guys barely threw any jabs, they threw power punches at eachother from round 1, and GM got hit FLUSH by dozens of NBs hardest shots from round 2 onwards. We had a betting pool and not a single person had McClellan by 1st round ko. We figured Benn would get knocked down, but would get back up. However, 1 person did say that Benn, like Tito, will do anything to win and was a dirty fighter. If the fight would have taken place in the states. Benn might have lost via DQ.

G-Man had complained of blinding headaches after his previous fight but not reported it to the British Boxing Board of doctors as the fight wouldn't have gone ahead.They underestimated Benn who was giving away 4 inches in height/ reach etc.He was on his ass 3 times and headbutted every 2 seconds. Yes Nigel was cocky but he just won a fight and for all we know Gerald and his camp had insulted Nigel, he was young and had to play the big man partly for his career image but also becuase pro boxing is a very shady business full of the very worst sorts of people and any sign of weakness could cost you dearly. I'm not sure about the commentators. First suggesting no obvious punch to put McClellan down. Then saying it might have been that one "way back there". The one that snapped his head by 180 degrees? Duh...yeah! Brilliant shot that could have put anyone down. Who was better on the night? Benn finished Round 1 looking defeated and out on his feet, then came out and gave that Round 2 performance. To come back like that takes more than just heart. It was the sign of a true champion.

I believe Benn was using some drug in this fight to enhance his ability. He was walking around for a good half an hour after the fight. Then all the sudden collapses when he has to pee. Adrenalin apparently worn off but surely after he woken up he could pee.
He said in an interview that he doesn't want to be known as a cheat. So why didn't he prove it? If he did take some sort of drug then i hold him responsible for McClellans injuries. Nigel looks a bit too guilty. He should confess to live on

McClelland was unfit and not trained properly for this fight. He punched himself out at the end of the first round. His gum shield was out of his mouth by the second round. So his brain was lacking oxygen at the same time as getting punched in the head. The damage was formed from not one blow or head-butt, but constant hits throughout the rounds.

As for how he acted, hes since said that he feels bad about his behaviour, as well as McClellans state, not that Benn directly caused it, but it was more an accumulation over the years. Theres a show on TV on Monday about the fight, and how Benn and McClellan have met since etc. It looks pretty emotional. I still say that if your opponent is laid out for 20 mins, you should at least go over and see whats wrong.

Why all this hate? Boxing isn't about nationalities, it is about two men going toe to toe, neither giving an inch. This was a truly great fight with tragic consequences. I agree that Benn showed a real lack of grace after the fight but I suspect that he was just so pumped up on adrenaline and didn't realise how serious McClelland's condition was. Benn took a lot of punishment in that fight as well, it could easily have been him these are the chances that boxers take when they step in the ring.

I remember seeing this fight, and being disgusted at Benns behaviour post fight. McLellan was clearly in trouble, and Ben only seemed interested in poking at the media and being angry down the camera, due to them thinking that he was going to lose before the fight. IMO, cumulation of too many massive headshots, gumshield problems, and an exhausted boxer unable to fight defensively are what harmed GM. That fight was brutal. GM should be helped by the sport now.

As a boxer, he steps into the ring for every fight knowing he might come out disabled, or worse might not come out at all. The profession should recognise that and have a fund set aside for boxers who have been badly hurt. Instead, boxers are routinely ripped off by shyster promoters and managers.

IMO, cumulation of too many massive headshots, gumshield problems, and an exhausted boxer unable to fight defensively are what harmed GM. That fight was brutal. GM should be helped by the sport now.

Utter RUBBISH that punches to back of the head caused GM collapse. Those 2 guys barely threw any jabs, they threw power punches at eachother from round 1, and GM got hit FLUSH by dozens of NBs hardest shots from round 2 onwards. ALSO, from round 5, GM hardly kept his gumshield in his mouth; gumshield science is disputed, but if they prevent concussion/haemorrhage, then his wouldnt have helped. He DID take a glancing blow which effected his eye in the 9th, but the punches he took after were...

@Dall113 Yes Benn did survive, but I do remember watching this fight live, it was my friend's house, and it was crowded with people. We knew this was going to be a great fight. We had a betting pool and not a single person had McClellan by 1st round ko. We figured Benn would get knocked down, but would get back up. However, 1 person did say that Benn, like Tito, will do anything to win and was a dirty fighter. If the fight would have taken place in the states. Benn might have lost via DQ.

However, please don't tell that you think Gerald McClellan left the hospital on his own two feet, fine and because he went on an airplane he ended up the way he did. Some idiot on the radio in the UK had the audacity to say this. That McClellan made a full recovery, but was advised not to fly and that is why he is in the condition he is now.

Absolute disaster from start to finish. The Ref was a disgrace and let both fighters get away with all sorts of repeated illegal blows, the American Comentators were a joke and disgustingly disrespectfull and also called almost the entire fight wrong,the paramedics took far too long to get air into McCellan and to get him out of there, which considering what happened to Watson before McClellan, is just so unacceptable and finally even allowing for Adrenaline Benn should have showed more concern

Clowns that give out about Benn. He had no money in the bank, this was his last shot at the bigtime even though he made 7 defenses he blew all his money. No one gave him a chance in this fight. He took a crazy amount of punishment that he was NEVER the same again. His adrenaline was through the roof. Trust me he had NO IDEA how bad things were with Gerald. @mcnamai Yes, I know what you're saying about adrenaline, him not knowing how bad the situation was, and him now feeling very bad about it; but I have to say I don't like how didn't show any concern for Gerald at the time, during the interview all he talked about was how great a fighter he was etc. I have played competitive sports before, and I know that when somebody has to be put on a stretcher, it's obvious that things can be serious. It wouldn't kill him to show a little concern.
