Update: In checking this out, I saw a post on the Internet where there are more than eight (some errantly list up to 23). The question as to whether this is "for a batter" to reach first base, or if a "runner," was not clear. The one I have not seen is for the runner on first to get back to the base before the throw or tag.
There are actually at least eight ways. Many people can name the following: 1. hit, 2. walk (base on balls), 3. hit by pitch, 4. catcher's interference, 5. dropped third strike, 6. error, 7. fielder's choice. Now what is the eighth?
