I've often thought about going up mountains in extreme conditions thinking it would be a breeze, but this has definitely brought me down a peg or two. Sorry this post is a bit long-winded because I'm rambling, so I'll stop now...
i think its not just the old stitching in the tent (as mentioned in posters comment).
its the fact that is uses only 2 fiberglas beams. in mountainside camping, and especcialy in this weatcher, you want a geodet construction or similar with 4+ beams, to have a sturdy construction.
I once spent the night on a valley site in a Marmot Thor 2. Oh how we laughed the next day when we woke up and every other tent had been flattened by the previous night's storm. Folk were sleeping in their cars, in the toilet block, under picnic tables...
Yep... these happened to me at the base of Snowdon in Wales, the difference been only 70mph winds but when they hit a 12 man tent, it aint a pretty site lol. :/
I almost feel kindof sorry for the tent. You can see how it clings onto life, but eventually it goes down just the same. Relentlessly destroyed after years of good service.
seriously, it looked like a summer tent, what was it doing up scotland on a day like that? was that just a joke kind of vid or was you actually out in it?
Hillebergs are good in wind... but still only tunnel tents. if you want to survive in the most severe gusts, it's gotta be a (semi) geodetic tent. Marmot Grid or Mountain Equipment Dragonfly are perfect for windy conditions.
yeah certainly, but those are expedition tents, more than double the price. I heard ME tents used to have quality issues until 5-6 years ago but now they are ace. Right now I'm looking for a "cheap" solo tent... tough choices... will probably end up spending 200£ on the laser comp. I'm tempted to wait for the Vaude Power Lizard though but it's more expensive and with the laser i know what i get. i definately want a double skin with a nice porch, any tips ?
Ah, they seem to be worth a look but it's too late now, I got the MSR Hubba HP which weighs in at 1.3 kg incl footprint for 170£. Should be a good choice. It's perfect for me, since I'm quite tall and reviews mentioned it's toughness.

BED BATH MMMMMM!!
@jusmeig Well I do not have a lot of experience but was that really fault of the price? could you say what is really worth to buy so I can slepp calmly at night in -20 and in a wind like this one?
i realy want to know wat yous done next it woulda been freezin did your pal manage to save his trousers i would be gutted unless there was a motor there to get into , looked like a good name tent aswel :(
That's one hell of a gust. Guess you might have learned from this not to pitch your tent in open high ground? Better even if there's a slight lip or lee to set it up by. I've used rocks in situations like this to create walls. Worked a treat.
A similar thing happened to me in Wales. Went camping high up in Llanberis pass over night. Forgot the fly tent and a change of clothes. Weather was fine but next day was woken up to sound of severe blowing and ripping. A storm had blown in and was ripping my tent while I was sleep in it.
Managed to grab my trackie bottoms but the matching track jacket, my jumper and rain coat were sucked out and blown away!
Never did find them and the tent was wrecked. Great video btw! Tent 0 - Storm 1
Still, doesnt matter what tent it is. 100mph is 100mph. Some solid structures wont take that. Why did you pitch it on the side of a valley in an obvious vulnerable spot.?
how unlucky dudes those winds seemed queit seriuos were you in ma home country , scotland wow get a better tent man .....so where did you s sleep that nict
Well we think about 100mph gusts, it got worse as the night went on! The tent was 12years old and the stiching was weak after so many years of camping in harsh sunlight etc.
I think a low profile 1 man tent, even a cheap one with a bivvy bag and good sleeping bag and you'd be sorted

In this context, I'd go for the hilleberg saivo or tarra...
Had bad experiences especially with M.E. stuff.

could have saved that terra nova, u must have more money than sense
sweetypie000 3 years ago 3
was that a terra nova?
shadster33 2 years ago
actually... lol it wasn't. it was a Jamet. I had a Jamet Dolomite before my Akto and I must say Jamet are an underestimated tent.
however, an adequate tent that someone could have saved, wasteful imho.
