  • The Reading pacifics I've seen in photos had wooten fireboxes. Is this loco old Reading equipment?

  • 425 is not a Reading locomotive... it is ex-GM&N

  • Nice video. The last time I saw the 425 was when it pulled an excursion at Steamtown to Tobyhanna. I never noticed that it had a front end throttle though, which seems rather odd for an engine of its size. Was it added later? Possibly during its most recent overhaul?

  • Thats possible, although Ive never seen this engine before the day I caught this, so I could be wrong.

The steamer looks great now that its finally finished, its has an attractive look to it.

  • Just for the record, it wasn't a passenger excursion.

Technically, it was an "Office Car Special"

  • Oh, thank you for the fyi, ill change it.

  • Beautiful engine & passenger cars. Great catch! A beautiful location too.

  • Thanks!

  • damn this video is doing awsome!!!

  • Road to Nowhere is the Rt. 222 Bypass. It was known as Road to Nowhere because it ended past Reading Airport. But, they extended it to bypass Temple, Reading and connect with 422 and 222 so it's no longer the RTN. Why was the train backing up, and why didn't they go all the way to NS junction? Would there be a problem moving 425 to the Hamburg branch for an excursion because of having to use a mile of NS track? Guess 425 will stay on the main line because of more miles to run.

  • Well actually the Reading Northern train out of Reading yard, RGQA, was right down the tracks. He had the line blocked, and I think this train ran to Jim Thorpe so they took their own tracks just to save themselves trouble.

  • Nice! I'm so glad that 425 is running again!

  • Me too, its a great locomotive.

  • yea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Great Video The same thing happened to me when I caught 1225 And the polar express a few weeks ago.

  • nice, this thing was quite a treat.

  • I cought videe of her on monday she was not fired but they were filling the tender.

  • Dang, you are lucky! I've never seen anything on the NS and CSX lines where I live in NC. Nice whistle btw.

  • DUDE! WHEN WAS THIS! I thought that this steamer was still in the shops!

  • Nope, after 14 years I believe, they brought it back and boy did it sound nice! this was taken yesterday afternoon.

  • The 425 last ran in 1996, so it's been 11 years.

    I been following the 425 since 1971.

    Len.

  • WOW! You mean you didn't know this ole' gal was going to show up?? Great catch.

She has some really large drivers. I guess she's built for more speed than power.

Great catch again & thanks for posting!

  • I had NO idea that she was around, me and friend Eric were actually there earlier, because we wanted to catch the Reading Turn. And we arrived a 2nd time and there were people gathered and tah dah there it was! And believe me that thing was booking! Thanks for commenting.

  • Like I said, I thought they were joking when I heard the RGQA mention 425 on the scanner. Although I knew she was out of the shops, I guess we got lucky to see her! Yeah, I imagine 425 can book A LOT of SPEED.

  • Yeah good thing you took us back! And remember 425 was smoming us, we barely made it to Port Clinton to catch it!

  • that was sweet! thanks!

  • Anytime.

  • YOU ARE SO LUCKY!!! I always miss the good trains. I've only seen ONE train go through where you are at and it was a NS.

You are right at the Road to No where. right?

  • I never heard of the road to no where, but these tracks begin after they branch off of CP BELT which is Norfolk Southern Trackage. These tracks head to Port Clinton, which is where the shops are, and beyond.

  • All the tracks were of the Reading Company. The tracks that Reading & Northern are on is of the Pottsville branch, then at Port Clinton they branch off to the Tamaqua Branch. which was the Little Schuylkil Branch.

    Len.

  • The Road to Nowhere is referring to whats now Rt 222 Freeway. It was called the Road to No where up until late 1990's when they connected The road to no where to the 222 that takes you to lancaster. It was called the road to nowhere because it use to end at Spring Ridge Exit (for the longest time) until they built up 422 and connected it to The road to no where. That your History Lesson.LOL Its the same road that takes you to Target in Wyomissing.

  • Oh, ok. Thanks, im not usually up here alot. I mean I know the roads and whatever but not enough to something like that.

  • i know that was a little "boring" but i just thought you'd like to know.

    Its no problem at all.

  • lol, thanks Chuck

  • omg a steamer ahhhh wow its a beauty!!! lol im so cool with my train slang

  • Built in 1928, RBMN 4-6-2 425 is running well restored in 2007! A very beautiful locomotive, that's real railroading right there! I thought they were kidding when I heard 425 on the scanner. It sent chills down my spine! It has been a long time since I've seen, heard, or smelled a steamer. I wish I could've filmed more of the whistle, but it distorted on my camera standing right next to it. I kept my car window open on the way to Port Clinton to hear it echo through the valley! :)

  • I already miss it! I wish youtube didnt compress the quality so much, oh well, still ok...this was one of our best catches I think. Something like this never happened to me before.

  • Am I luck or what? Everytime I go down to Reading something pops up. First, the triple meets at Belt. Sceond, the Reading NW2 moving all the equipment EXACTLY 3 months ago. Third, THIS! What's next, Reading 2100? :)

  • Way to go Zach way to go. You made my night!. Best Video ever!

    Len.

  • Why thank you Len, glad you liked it!

  • The 425 is alive and well. It's nice you cought it before the new year is in too. Very nice to hear that stack talk once again. The 425 look cool with that white cab. the train is 100 % USA all the way. Red White and Blue. lol.

    Len.

  • You made history today Zach. your the first one to have gotten video of the 425 in the year 2006.

    Len.

  • Well, me and my friend Eric both did, he was next to me.

  • You know I did. Hey, if it wasn't for me suggesting we meet to head up to Reading and Northern you would not have saw this! ;) I hope to be seeing more of the 425, maybe even a ride with it on an excursion? Very wonderful!

  • I know, Thanks alot! Sometime we will have to be riding it.

  • I ment 2007. sorry.

  • it's not every ay these kinda things happen...

  • I know, good thing I caught it.

  • you reply too fast lol

  • you had no idea this was happening!

  • Nope, caught us by surprise!
