I know that it's sad that Fred dies but the part that really gets me is Remus and Tonks. It's just... really much more of a sad situation. I think Harry felt what it would be like for their son to grow up without his parents.
I read that Rowling's decision to kill off Lupin and Tonks was compensation for sparring Arthur Weasley at the last minute in OotP. She also said that she always knew that Fred would be the twin that would die (so it was always planned?! :'C).
Man, with so many wonderful characters dying, this film/book had me sobbing like a baby. I still consider it (and Part 1) the best movie(s) in the series.
omg i want to just kick myself right now...how is it that after all the times i've watched this movie on the television that NOW i figured out that one of the weasley twins died =0
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! so sad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! but thats wat i love about this movie, they are such great actors that it seems like fred did die, and they are his family, well oliver and james are family, but ya, so sad :'C
I stared laughing at Fred's death cause I saw a behind the scene thing where it said that the actor who played Fred fell asleep during the filming. But I started crying seeing remus and tonks.
after all his friends lie dead from his own fault, he went to his room, and went the way of kurt coabain, avada cadabra! jkjjkjkjk, i miss u harry potter :(
@chaoticXmisfit No, that would ruin it. It's worse to see then just barely holding hands than it is to see them holding hands. To see them holding hands would confirm they died together. This way, they didn't die together, they died trying to be together.
This scene, it was too much. I cry every time I see it. Every time the three of them walk into the Great Hall to do this, I start shaking because I know what's coming.
Can you upload the bit where voldemort talks to Harry about "you have allowed your friends to die for you rather than face me yourself. There is no greater dishonor." that whole bit? I can't find it anywhere!! Please and thank you!!
@AideenRathnaitTV Failure from your part yes. There were many hints during the movie about who was Fred. And if you didnt pay attention to clothes when it comes to twins then you are just asking for trouble.
It was too unreal actually seeing Fred dead, I had the same reaction in the book :( I almost reared up when George asked if Fred was ok, and they were on the roof....that was really sad.
@ohmyrowling96 Lets see... mother hugging the body crying, a devastated Bill and Fleur trying to comfort eachother, father crying, a sad Perry caring for his devastated brother and a little sister that is in shock. How is that not mourning? You have to look at their faces! And of course they are just standind there. What were they supposed to be doing?
When I first watched this scene I really didn't want to cry because of the people around me. I just watched this again, and now there are tears all over my homework...
Fred's death is the most terrible thing that can happen in Harry Potter ... I am a big fan of the Weasley twins / Phelps and Fred's death devastated me because I feel the pain of George (I lived at birth ... My sister forever in my heart ..)
To imagine that James and Oliver both died, their can do much harm. Oliver was really hard to play this scene.
Finally, Fred died in a much more fortunate than his twin, George saw more than half and even more terrible.
@ladycplum the last part about the mirror I actually didn't know. That just made Fred's death even more tradgic.
And it also shows that Fred and George were the happiest twins alive in their first year. They didn't even desire fame or gold, something their family seemed lacking of. :'( RIP Fred
I love this scene...wish it was more stuck to the book though. Well, they have to please both book and movie fans, so it must´ve been hard to do this scene justice.
@farmerjamesfergus When a real person feels like that, they are in shock! It becomes too much for them and they dont know how to react! Every person with a heart can see what Harry is going through! I can see the pain you are talking about in his eyes! Dan did a good job!
when i was seven and read the philosophers stones and i read about Fred, I thought: damn his cool, hie's the best caracter in the whole Harry Potter story. Then, 8 years later, i read in the book how fred died, and that broked my heart
I hate how they don't tell you which twin it was. Obviously we know because we read the book, but it doesn't really say which one died. You're supposed to just know because their clothes are different, but who pays attention to that? My dad kept asking "So, which twin died?" *sigh* failure, absolute failure...
George definitely needed to be practically dead inside after Fred's death. Most people who see their twins dead suffer PTSD because of something like this. Crying over him wasn't enough.
I really think they should have fleshed out Tonks, and her relationship with Remus. In the movies, we never really get a sense for who she is, and Lupin sort of loses his character over the course of the movies.
i think it was more of shock value, and also i think that since they had the Room of Requirement scene and Snapes death it was too much for people to handle
I heard that this scene was so short because Oliver was having so much trouble just seeing James pretend to die. I also heard that when James was reading the book that he started tearing up when he found out he was suppose to die.
@evilmonkeyactress james also mentioned in an interview he fell asleep while doing this scene and he didn't wake up until everyone went to lunch lol good old james
@evilmonkeyactress Emotionally, he could only do the scene five times. Seeing his brother lying 'dead' on the ground was too much. Probably the hardest scene he ever did.
WHY do i subject myself to this torture, watching fred die???? he was my favorite! and what makes it even sadder is that Oliver is actually living the part, too.
@A2S21000 Actually, it was one of the professors. I've seen a still photograph of the scene, they never named her, but it's the teacher who was standing next to Snape at the Yule Ball in GOF, the one in the red dress. You can see her most clearly when Karkaroff takes that really short woman out onto the dance floor.
@linkLoverAG That is Lavender Brown, the one who died from being attacked by Greyback and also Ron's shallow girlfriend in Prince. If you did read the book she and Parvati are particularly fond of Professor Trelawney.
@valkyria20chronicles No. The films fail to show the emotion Harry was going through in the books. People who haven't read the books will always fail to see the true emotion Harry felt. He felt so much pain and suffering, that he wanted to die, thus the stone appeared. Just as Dumbledore had planned. Dan and Yeates failed to show the true essence of that scene that we Potter book fans are aware of.
@ladycplum@ohmyrowling96 And when you experience tomuch pain and suffering your body shuts down. You refuse to accept it is real. Harry was feeling so bad that he didnt know how to react! He didnt want it to be true! Daniel did an amazing job! You just fail to see it!
And everyone with the gift of sight can see that the entire family is mourning Fred death!
And afterwards, werent they allowed to be happy that it was all over and talk to their loved ones who was still with them!??
@valkyria20chronicles Woah, calm down love! I know you might like it, but for me, this scene is just dead. George/Ron seem to be the only ones actually mourning. I wouldn't mind if the others looked the whole 'numb with pain' thing, but they're just standing there. Sorry if I wanted a bit more effort put into honouring the characters.
@ladycplum@ohmyrowling96 Listen the both of you. You got to remember that they had to adapt the movies to two audiences. Those who had read the books and those who hadnt. The deaths was set up so they would be an emotional shock to those who havent read the books. And it worked! They didnt mess up anything.
JK revealed two things about George afterwards that broke my heart even more. One, she said he was never able to produce a Patronus again for the rest of his life. Two, she said the twins had both looked into the Mirror of Erised while they were at Hogwarts, but thought it was a regular mirror since they just saw their own reflections. Then, a few years after the battle, George came across it again, and finally understood how it worked when he saw Fred standing next to him in the mirror. :(
Wow I didnt think Id get so many replys on the last thing I said. When I get mad I talk weird. But Im still not a big fan of harry himself. I read the series cuz of the characters around him who support him.
@12nfv Tonks's death was never revealed though Fred's death was. In the books it said how he died. Which is why so many people are annoyed it wasn't shown in the film. But I can see why it was left out - would have caused too much sadness.
@lyta1lupinfan1 So of course he walked out. He felt he had no right to be there!
No offence but if you`re really planning to be a director someday, you need to develop a better understanding of good directing and peoples emotions. I`ve lost count of how many times ive watched this scene and it nearly makes me cry every time. And im a grown man! ( sort of)
This scene couldnt have been done better. It was even better than the book version.
@Lyta1Lupinfan1 Dont you see how amazing this scene is !? Cant you see Harrys pain!? And the deaths coulndt be better set up! Lupin and Tonk`s death was supossed to be a shock to those who havent read the book. And trust me, the 9 times i watched in the theater, this scene did its job. People were yelling "NO!" . And of course Harry walked out! He was ashamed! He felt it was all his fault that all those people died! He felt that all the pain and suffering was cuz of him. And it kinda was!
