Imagine we're in a live performance with such a Rosina. How would we all react? We'd be on our chairs and scream our hearts out for such a superb performance. But what do we do instead? We compare to Berganza, Horne or others and discuss certain techniques. We must be crazy - all of us!
What a pitty to put such bad video about Kasarova. Go and look at her other performances and you will hear a totally different voice. By some of the DVD like "The Clemenza di Tito"---
Her voice isn't (or at least wasn't) all that big, actually. This was taped at Sophia's huge palace of art so she was amplified with that mic that she sometimes got too close to. It's bigger now than in '97, and even more rounded and full... so she's moving toward Dalila and Eboli, I think.
But why shouldn't she be singing Rossini??? The lass is one of the most celebrated Rossini and bel canto singers of her generation!
Oh really?I haven't done my research of this singer.I do like her voice though.Let me restate that"I don't think she should be singing Rossini b/c I think her voice is too heavy" Now Donizetti and Verdi I know she can tear apart b/c it fits her fach better.I like her flexibility and interpretation of Rosina but I would prefer to hear a lighter tone and not too much "dark mezzo" if you please.I like Berganza singing it(she was dark too)but she also had a lighter feel for that period.
I have heard this comment on Sra. Berganza, but I really don't find how that claim could be true. How is she dark when compared to Larmore, kasarova, and Horne? I love Berganza though, one of my favs.
I'm grateful that different voices are singing Rosina and other Rossini roles, actually. I like darker and deeper Slavic voices, some, like you, like lighter voices (and some even prefer the soprano version).
It's great that these gals are giving us choices to choose from. And it would be a shame if Rosina is reserved only for the Kasarova-like voices that please me but not you or others. Variety is the spice of life (can't remember who said that first).
Well, I didn't think dark in terms of her skin. I know what dark is; I just don't see how Berganza is. Give me some examples of this darkness that is on the level of Horne or those other deep mezzos I did and did not mention.
It is big enough, but I really wouldn't call it huge, though. You have to be careful trying to judge the size of a voice from a recording... especially when she is using a microphone. :o) The Sofia Palace of Culture is a big hall.
@SDCmorg I actually think the size of the voice is being falsely ascertained by the overly-dark and covered timbre of her voice. They sound huge in recordings because we often attribute dark to a large and intimidating person, but said voices often do not have the proper balance of chiaroscuro or enough upper-register squillo to produce enough of the singers' formant to fully project and pierce.
I agree. Her voice is rich, perhaps too rich for this role. Her coloratura seems a little sluggish compared to Moffo or Sills, and she compromises high notes that the others sang. Nevertheless I like this performance. I'll look for more of her.
This is probably the funniest Una voce I've seen - she just nails it! Somehow she combines near perfect technique (I don't believe there is such a thing as a perfect singer) with such a lovable stage personality. It's all about the character, not about her! Love it to bits!

Wow, great control for a voice so big. But she should not be singing Rossini.

Ah, that is true. It seems that maybe there is a place or two where the amplification falters.
