it wasnt, the game earned several game of the year awards .NOLF was named "Game of the Year" and "Action Game of the Year" by Computer Games Magazine.It also received "Action Game of the Year" awards from Computer Gaming World and PC Gamer magazines.

at the time it most certainly wasnt overlooked, maybe it is now because its old.

the NOLF games were remarkably strict about killing innocent people. If you drop one(or the monkey, as he did!), the game makes you start over. This game came out before checkpoints in mid-level were standard fare, and so a careless civilian kill was often a good way to have to start an entire level over.

Yeah, unlike a lot of shooters where you can smoke every person you come across like a cheap cigar(Deus Ex, for example), you really have to be careful in NOLF. It really makes you think about what you're doing in high-population areas.
