Think I remember watching a show, forget which one saying Bench was more popular than Rose across the country, but Rose was more popular in Cincinnati and Bench was very jealous of that!!
In his prime, Johnny Bench is the best catcher I ever saw play period. The guy had an absolute gun for an arm, he was a master at digging balls out of the dirt and he revolutionized how the game was played. He wasn't the same in terms of arm or power after the doctors found the spot on his lung and cut through his muscles, but even at 80-90% he was still the best catcher of his era, period and he was always good to the fans, singing autographs,etc. Pete Rose really hurt and disappointed him.

I think there is some misinterpretation here. I don't think Bench is angry with Rose, nor do I think Bench thinks Rose should not be in the Hall of Fame. What Bench said toward the end of this video was "He should be in the Hall of Fame for what he did on the field, but not for what he did off of the field". Things off of the field are usually forgotten and forgiven. Rose has taken his punishment and asked for forgiveness. I think Bench and others will ultimately accept it.
The news on Rose and Bench inducted into HOF happened at the same time. Rose upstaged him(not in a good way) maybe that is the root of this. I support Pete but I can see what John is saying. I was a bouncer/doorman during the time when pittsburgh was a big city and
when the reds came to town, this bench guy would routinely grab women where they should not to be touched,shout at little kids when they pleaded for an autograph. Several times ,over the years,he would be drunk or hungover and I had to pick him up and carry his fat soft body into my manager's office.

In his prime, Johnny Bench is the best catcher I ever saw play period. The guy had an absolute gun for an arm, he was a master at digging balls out of the dirt and he revolutionized how the game was played. He wasn't the same in terms of arm or power after the doctors found the spot on his lung and cut through his muscles, but even at 80-90% he was still the best catcher of his era, period and he was always good to the fans, singing autographs,etc. Pete Rose really hurt and disappointed him.

I think Bench is right. There are rules that have to be followed. Bench didn't make these rules the league did. You have to abide by these rules and if you don't it can work against you. Pete Rose had more than enough time to come clean and he didn't. He denied betting on baseball for almost 15 years until his book came out. And for years he did nothing but challenge the commissioner of baseball to prove that he bet on baseball. He was a great ball player but a bigger idiot.

I think there is some misinterpretation here. I don't think Bench is angry with Rose, nor do I think Bench thinks Rose should not be in the Hall of Fame. What Bench said toward the end of this video was "He should be in the Hall of Fame for what he did on the field, but not for what he did off of the field". Things off of the field are usually forgotten and forgiven. Rose has taken his punishment and asked for forgiveness. I think Bench and others will ultimately accept it.

The news on Rose and Bench inducted into HOF happened at the same time. Rose upstaged him(not in a good way) maybe that is the root of this. I support Pete but I can see what John is saying. I was a bouncer/doorman during the time when pittsburgh was a big city and
when the reds came to town, this bench guy would routinely grab women where they should not to be touched,shout at little kids when they pleaded for an autograph. Several times ,over the years,he would be drunk or hungover and I had to pick him up and carry his fat soft body into my manager's office.

Pete also didn't abuse steriods like many players who are in the Hall of Fame. Those players should not have been allowed into the Hall of Fame because drug use is a much more serious offense than gambling. At least Mr. Rose's accomplishments were 100% his own natural abilities and not due to drug use.
