@therealJodan Sounds like he has a synth bass pedal. It's just an effects pedal you connect to your bass and amplifier and press down when you want to activate the effect.
@littlewolfofficial His name is Nathan East, bass player for the jazz quartet Fourplay, Phil Collins, Eric Clapton, Anita Baker, etc.. he's LA most called up and sessionist..
@engineman0815 dude I was about to blast you for dariing to call Herbie boring, but the sound is so soul-less. Drummer has no vibes, bass is boring and has no body.
Hmmm...I might wager that it was Herbie who was late on the last hit. Usually the band is supposed to listen to the drummer for the pace of the ritard.
@paringu well I was just saying that because everybody was at the same time in that hit but not Vinnie ,maybe that hit was like that maybe not,or just the feeling you know,I was just messing up,of course there are a lot more good things to say about this great musicians..
could it be cause you are really hearing Cameleon and you think you understand what you believe you heard but what they are performing is not what you meant?
I love Herbie and have seen him twice live, but the problem is that he plays a sound that "imates" a real hornsection (like in the original studio recoding version of this song). But a synthesizer is in my opinion an instrument with its own sound. It is shity when you try to replace a "real" instrument and a real musician wih one synthesizer.
Which he doesn't, as long as you don't think of the synth sound as something that "Imitates" another sound but just another tone available and close to the traditional ones like a horn section, or, as you said, a sound in itself. There's a real musician working on just another tone to produce a real (very good) sound / music.
@jazzzzzman Alot of times, it's because alot of them couldn't afford the sounds they wanted when they were just cutting basic club gigs. And that's the sound to which they're accustomed, as far as synth goes. But you also have to think, these were the guys that really made those sounds. Herbie Hancock especially. Because before guys like him and Stevie Wonder, etc. The most advanced thing on the market was the old Rhoads EOP which was just an electric organ with vibrato.
Well, the guitar player played some real outside notes in the preceding phrase, so Herbie just lays down a classic crunchy altered dominant (b9,11)... Nothing to see here, move along...
Vinnie has played on over 1000 albums, played on the Joan Rivers show, toured with Sting, currently tours with Jeff Beck and Herbie Hancock, and can play any style of music. It's like when he plays live he just loses the ability to play music. And yes, I mean music, not stupidly over the top, far too loud 'oh look at me i can play fast and i know some polyrhythms' shit. What a wanker.
Your comment is interesting (as is others who say he is off time).....The way you feel about the drummer is valid(It's how you feel) But it's interesting that Herbie Hancock doesn't realize what you know. I think The drumming is excellent myself. Maybe Herbie should call you for advice about who should be in his band: Cause obviously you know more about music than ol Herb.
I don't dig the stuff from the guitarist at all. It sounds horrible to my ears. Sounds to me like he tries to be as much off beat and off tone as possible...not cool at all I think. He is playing tonally for a great deal of the time?... he uses no more syncopation than any other jazz player... Please don't comment on things that you clearly don't understand. Omg! Why do you attack me? I just expressed my humble opinion on the clip here on youtube..is that a crime? I DO know what I'm talking about. I'm a session musician and play about 100 gigs a year with various artists and genres. But that doesn't matter. I still think I have the right to write what I think about a clip. I just wrote that because it's fun. Youtube comments are one of the highlights of my day - ooo the bickering!
You are more than entitled to your own opinion. I wish I played 100 gigs a year! Then again if you are playing so much and still think Lionel is too far out, I don't think I'd enjoy your gigs very much. hehe.
hehe, that's fair! No hard feelings. :) I normally like his playing alot just wasn't my taste in this clip, that's all. What's your instrument? I saw two clips on your profile with piano and bass...wild shit! hehe. You're one of them?
I love Lionel Loueke, but I agree. I don't really care for some of the licks he's playing in this video. It just comes off as an attempt to be abstract.
I love Herbie, but this sounds dysfunctional. I would have walked away from this concert disappointed. Break out the old analog gear, get Mike Clark, Paul Jackson, Wah Wah Watson, and Bennie Maupin.
i understand where vinnie was going in theory because he kinda does those weird time lag riff's a lot but that is one of those cases where it did'nt work in practice.
really? you don't think that worked? he seems to come back in without any trouble. i just commented originally because i want to know what he was thinking!
i think he came in perfectly its just that while he was playing that riff it gave a wierd effect. i've got lot's of stuff that vinnie does that type of thing. it's like one of his favourite things 2 do but sometimes it seems 2 make things a little awkward. its basicly playing slightly behind the beat.
HE likes to make things awkward, probably to confuse the audience and the other musicians....Just kidding, but those awkward things are just jokes, that what he said about Im Tweaked. jajaja. They are funny!!!! Maybe Zappa's musical sarcasm was contagious, no?
speaking of playing around with time, have you ever heard him with sting. he's got this song called "7 day's" thats in 5 (you've probably heard of it) where vinnie's really playing with time. as a matter of fact there's a few song on that album where he plays with the time. the songs are in odd time and vinnie has this uncanny ability to flip the time. i did'nt realize how hard the songs on that album were until now because i'm trying to learn them.
I have even have the pop albums where he plays in, like in Alejandro Sanz MTV unplugged, and Eros Ramazzotti, many others....and his work with Frank Zappa, now there you can see what I mean by playing around with time, polyrhythms and weird borrowed time(s) ad odd time signatures too like 19/16, I enjoy that more that plain speed, VInnie has class
Little Green Rosetta is quite weird and funny, reggae backwards and he plays like Steve Gadd, Steve Gadd's Clone.....jajajajajaj. Token of my Extreme, great technical groove. Lucille's Reggae, great stuff in Joe's Garage, some time signature changes, weird stuff... I'm just bored

Yes seven days is in fact one of my favorite songs, and I have that album Ten Summoner's, and yes he even play around with odd time signatures, like playing the ride in 4/4 and the rest in 7/8. but is not that hard to play the grooves, its just that you cant play like he does, tasty fills and ornamentation
Chameleon is one of the landmark songs in jazz/funk/fusion... that song alone is significantly more famous than Azymuth (the whole band). Chameleon is one of the most covered songs around
I saw these guys with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.. Absolutely amazing.. They didn't do Chameleon or Cantaloupe Island though.. Did do St. Louis Blues, the most funked out I've EVER heard it.. Amazing stuff, amazing musicians
Always love me some herbie hancock can,t stand the bass player nathan east though i never liked him ever since i saw at a clinic in vancouver last year.
Hi guys, The headhunters members had right. there were an not so known debate around the headhunters saying Herbie made people believe he was the Major band member... Without any headhunters members, the herbie's concert sounds so freaky now. and It does not groove at all. Oh man, it is even worst than a jazz session at your local pub.
Viennie are an awesome drummer and he has a fantastic groove

i understand where vinnie was going in theory because he kinda does those weird time lag riff's a lot but that is one of those cases where it did'nt work in practice.
marc777danielle 3 years ago
that wasnt that weird not that hard to understand
juanbarros88 3 years ago
really? you don't think that worked? he seems to come back in without any trouble. i just commented originally because i want to know what he was thinking!
drummerboy3535 3 years ago
i think he came in perfectly its just that while he was playing that riff it gave a wierd effect. i've got lot's of stuff that vinnie does that type of thing. it's like one of his favourite things 2 do but sometimes it seems 2 make things a little awkward. its basicly playing slightly behind the beat.
marc777danielle 3 years ago
HE likes to make things awkward, probably to confuse the audience and the other musicians....Just kidding, but those awkward things are just jokes, that what he said about Im Tweaked. jajaja. They are funny!!!! Maybe Zappa's musical sarcasm was contagious, no?
juanbarros88 3 years ago 3
you know what man, you're probably right because he does like 2 do stuff like that. good pick homey.
marc777danielle 3 years ago
He plays around with time, thats wasnt that out anyway, its just borrowed time
juanbarros88 3 years ago
speaking of playing around with time, have you ever heard him with sting. he's got this song called "7 day's" thats in 5 (you've probably heard of it) where vinnie's really playing with time. as a matter of fact there's a few song on that album where he plays with the time. the songs are in odd time and vinnie has this uncanny ability to flip the time. i did'nt realize how hard the songs on that album were until now because i'm trying to learn them.

thanks for the comment, I'll try to find that music.. I don't like all of Vinnie's stuff, but this is really cool!
gulikersj 3 years ago
the album is called "10 sumners tales"
marc777danielle 3 years ago
I have even have the pop albums where he plays in, like in Alejandro Sanz MTV unplugged, and Eros Ramazzotti, many others....and his work with Frank Zappa, now there you can see what I mean by playing around with time, polyrhythms and weird borrowed time(s) ad odd time signatures too like 19/16, I enjoy that more that plain speed, VInnie has class
juanbarros88 3 years ago
joes garage. that album was rediculous. did he play on "shut up and play your guitar", "son of ....." and "you can't do that live anymore"?
marc777danielle 3 years ago

I'm sure there's a bit of Azymuth's 'Chameleon' slipped in here...
BenGilhooly1992 4 years ago
azymuth's chameleon? you mean... chameleon, the classic funk song that herbie hancock wrote?
rofl. of course they're playing chameleon, it's herbie's song.

Shame! I never knew that, how did Azymuth discover that song then? Their version sounds so typical of Azymuth that I just assumed it was theirs...
BenGilhooly1992 4 years ago
Chameleon is one of the landmark songs in jazz/funk/fusion... that song alone is significantly more famous than Azymuth (the whole band). Chameleon is one of the most covered songs around

i liked everything but the guitar sounded off, bass keyboards and drums were totally bitchin

I saw these guys with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.. Absolutely amazing.. They didn't do Chameleon or Cantaloupe Island though.. Did do St. Louis Blues, the most funked out I've EVER heard it.. Amazing stuff, amazing musicians

Hi guys, The headhunters members had right. there were an not so known debate around the headhunters saying Herbie made people believe he was the Major band member... Without any headhunters members, the herbie's concert sounds so freaky now. and It does not groove at all. Oh man, it is even worst than a jazz session at your local pub.
stepsahead 4 years ago
bit harsh with the pub comment - its extremely groovin to non-hardcore jazz or herbie fans...
: P
or if u think vinnie has always got a groove going!
