Takes some work but the car starts coming together after a while. Fieros demand dedication haha but they are hot cars when you work out the kinks Im working on my third now its an 86 SE with a 5 speed. Good luck
If youre still active, I could use you on my forum on turbo-mopar[.]com. I just bought my fiero, 87 2.5 3 speed, exact same as yours. Id love input, you can find it in the garage section
the 4cyl ive heard were really bad engines man the 2.4L v6 is where its at man thats my 86 gt has and that thing runs like a dream even after 140,000 miles
Oh ok I'm in lagrange and I have 20 fieros all gt fastback some ttops and one 3800sc oh and one 87 duke same color as yours looks justtt like it but I did a fastback swap!! Call me some time 440.989.6660 nick
it is the lifters ticking, they do that when they become losened and worn down, ive owned all 5 of my families fieros ronging from 1984 to 1987, every one of the 4cyl. made that same noise, and they all had lifters replaced and they stopped maing the noise.
I used to have an 84 with a knock even worse than yours (thought it was valves, but turned out to come from the crankcase area). one day after i wrecked it, i was revving it between 5 and 6k for 15 seconds, then it blew a head gasket. not wat i expected.
I don't know about the rest of the car but the engine noise you are hearing was very common among the 2.5L engine. About 95% of them sounded just like that and would run for ever that way.
Ah, that good old Iron Duke tick! It never did go completely away on my Fiero, from 100,000 all the way to when it finally gave up at almost 140,000 miles. Drove my mechanic nuts;-)
Gave you a video responce. Our fieros are almost identical, even down to the missing Fiero logo behind the passenger side door! Lol! I have a rebuilt motor in mine, automatic trans, and 113k miles (9k on the motor)
that ticking sound could be the injector. when I race my fiero with the V8 crossfire with out the air cleaner you can hear it out side the car! Do you need any thing for it? I have lots of parts.

Thats not a normal sound from a Fiero Iron Duke. Sounds like the lifters?

this thing has gon nothing but downhill since i bought it im pretty sure i got scammed
thewraith2143 2 years ago
I have a 2m4 myself and there is only two common causes for that ticking in the "iron Duke" that I am aware of.
!. sticky valve lifter
2. timing gears worn...these damn cars don't have a timing belt
I tore my engine down to find that problem
