It's possible to cheat and play an open D-string instead, though it'll be slightly off.

my damn fingers keep getting in the way of the strings. I hold a string down and unless my wrist is in a brutally painful position, I cant strike the next string without getting it muted due to my finger. do you have to have bony fingertips to play guitar in general? I mean Im 5'11 185. Im not a real big guy.. how can I get my hand to reach the strings without muting the adjacent ones without my wrist breaking?

String one is the high E string. the second string is the B string.

The 6th string is the low E string. the 5th string is the a string.

Sorry mate but you have the last note wrong, it should be an 'E' on the third string not a 'C#'. Also that last part would be easier just using an open 'A' instead of using the "pinky" on the first string and over complicating it.

This confused me until I realized that you were referring to the 6th string low E as the 1st string. When referring to the strings by number the standard convention is to go ascending from the highest pitched string to the lowest. 1-E 2-B 3-G 4-D 5-A 6-E. Maybe the idea is fatter string = higher number. Your right on both counts other than the string numbers. Using the open A also sounds better because it sustains while you change fingers to start the pattern over.
