Thank you for this, but I only know Volare song that uses this technique, is there any other songs ? i've learn this, but because lack of knowledge of the songs that uses this, i got bored... thanks again :D
I understand there are a number of different techniques for playing triplet rasgueado. What, in your opinion are the advantages of this one? Thank you for posting.
After about a year and a half of working on this (from this specific video, no less), I'm finally comfortable enough to use this spontaneously when performing. I'm not a flamenco player at all, but if you're already capable of strumming without a plectrum using your thumbnail and your index fingernail, this technique is excellent for adding some rhythmic spice to your playing.
Great video. I have a question...When I do a P downstroke, sometimes my nail gets caught on a string. I was wondering if this has happened to you, and if so, what was your solution? Also, how much of the downstroke is your nail and how much is the flesh of your thumb? Thanks
@markey628 Try a slightly different angle on the downstroke. Yes the nail will hook if it is too long on the playing edge or if it is not very smooth. Get under the playing edge with a very fine nail buffing stick or folded piece of cardboard and give it a good polish. The flesh contacts first and you don't need very much nail at all. The nail should just glide across the strings once the initial contact is made by the flesh. There comments are meant as a guide only. Experiment.
That is interesting. Thank you. I always wondered how that was done.
Interesting, that there are two thumb strokes in a row, although in opposite direction. (One would think it perhaps easier to continue to alternate between thumb and finger.)
Is it only the middle finger that is used for the finger stroke, or is it multiple fingers?
For those of us with arthritis...... Have you seen some of the older guitarists manage to get through the pain and even increase their flexibility? Would wine help?
Great vid, really helpful!! Just a question, how long did it take for you to master this? I'm very much a novice, i just want to get an idea of how much consistent practice is needed... Thanks
@kayserus I avoid giving definitive answers to questions like this. It is very subjective and how long I took it master this will probably put you off rather than inspire you. The thing is I am not you. "How long" is a piece of string. It depends entirely on how much time you want to devote to practicing this. Get started now and maybe on six months you may have an answer to your own question. You may even surprise yourself and master it in four weeks.
@hersoveela No worries, i knew there's no definitive answer, but this kind of technique is so foreign to me that some kind of target to look forward to always helps.
I"m stuck on 125bpm with a lot of practice to come. Thanks!
everyone who doesn't understand this or get the strokes right get pumping nylon by scott tennant, it's a cheesy title but it teaches you finger strength and also this technique.
I don't fully understand the direction of the strokes though.... which finger strums directly on the strings and which one slides over the strings? Thanks a lot hersov :)
Thank you so much for this video! I'm surprised I picked this up so fast, the comments made me nervous. Far from perfect, but it's starting to sound pretty good.
I believe it's counter productive to think in terms of wrong and right. All I can say is why limit yourself. Try different methods. You will soon find a way that gives you the sound you want and feels comfortable for you.
i just wondered if there would be a situation where it would be a problem. i learned tremelo picking the other way round as well on classical...strange person.
I'm now learning rumba and flamenco styles after 8 years on electric guitar and its so different in the philosophy and technique ,like two different worlds!
i still cant get use to the idea that my picking hand moves in 2 dierections at the same time :)
One more thing, your lessons are really terrific hersoveela. As a teacher, I'm always trying to improve my own teaching technique and approach, along with my playing. Teaching is most deffinately a skill and an art, that needs to be honed and polished often in order to keep it fresh.
Your lessons are step by step and easy to follow and I love your camera agles, as it makes learning much easier, especially for the novest. Anyway, great job! Thanks. Peace.
Great lesson! I've been playing and teaching guitar for 26 years, various styles. However I've always flirted with Flamenco guitar and studied it a bit, but then would put it down for awhile. Lately, I've begun to study the style again, much more seriously. One of the techniques that I've really wanted to become more fluent in, is of course the triple rasqueado. Your lesson is just what I was looking for. Great, great! Thank you, you've made my day. Peace.
To the guy who thinks his triplet sounds like s***. You are absolute on the correct path to make it sound correctly. Only because the fact that you can recognize that it does not sound good. My philosophy on guitar playing is pretty simple. You can only play as good as you can hear or listen.
I've been practicing this and so far the part that gives me the most trouble is the down stroke with the thumb. When I come down with it my nail gets caught in the strings sometimes and instead of making a smooth sound with the strings, I get one nasty "plank!" sound. Is it a nail size issue?
Do the downstoke really slow to find out which part of the nail edge is hooking and shave it down a touch on the underneath and around that part of the edge. If hooking is not the problem, try polishing the underside of the nail and adjust your stroke so that both nail and flesh strike together. Either way it may be just a slight adjustment to get it right. Also practice the downstroke by itself until you get the angle right to get a good sound.
how long did it take you to learn this triplet rasgueado properly, untill it sounded reasonable?
Not just a question for hersoveela, but everyone, I'm practicing this for about 2 months almost everyday about 15 minutes or half an hour and it still sounds like real S***.
To be honest, about 6 months. It gets even better the more you do it after that. Don't give up. Keep practicing slowly and with purpose, relaxing between each strike. One fine day, it will stop sounding like shit and you will never look back. Breaking through the wall happens suddenly so look forward to that time. If you hands start to feel stressed and stiff, take a break and shake your hands often to get the circulation going.
I thank you for you answer. I sure will keep practicing, I do have to say it does sound better than 2 months ago, it's just frustrating if it doesn't work, but I will keep my disciplin.
Got to say that I slowly started thinking something was wrong with me :p.
But seriously thank you, it gives me a certain period to keep in mind, that I can't learn it after a couple of weeks practice.
I don't have a clue on how, but I forgot to tell you how good your performances are.
Thanks you so much for these vids. As a classical guy who has afew flamenco elements in his pieces, you just saved me a ton of cash on flamenco lessons. Thanks again :)

actually, there is no such thing as right or wrong. This is just the way I do it. Try it. If you like it, use it. If you see another way to get a similar effect, and you prefer that, then use that one instead. Guitar playing is a very personal thing. There are no set "rules" that everyone must follow, only guides to experiment with until you find what is best FOR YOU.
Thanks. I've been giving 'your' way a try - find the down thumbstroke move a bit awkward. I also read about a thumb (up), little finger down, index finger (down) sequence, which strikes me as being the trickiest of all. But, as you say, whatever suits.

Thanks for your help.
