The music change in question was completely and utterly without a doubt the single most useless thing done to a localized anime in recent years, and that's saying something. All I got to say in response to Bandai is...and you released Big O when you were this cowardly?!
As many have gone to the effort of pointing out already, Gunbuster's being released by BandaiVisual. They're a separate branch from BandaiEntertainment, so there's different people making the calls (which is part of why the release turnaround time on this was quick, as opposed to Zeta taking two years.) To that end, that whole copyright mess was prob. what influenced this call (after the hassle they went through there, was probably easier to just say forget it.)
You know what's funny? Nothing you said contradicted anything I said. You honestly thought I didn't know any of that? Please. Doesn't change anything I said about their decision.
In that case, here's one which, in light of your first comment, I suspect you didn't know (assuming you haven't since learned it.) Believe it or not, Big O underwent similar edits without anyone raising Hell (the opening to the second season was changed due to similarity to the theme to 'UFO' (a piece whose composer had tried to sue over before.) It's likely this was the start of Bandai's 'better safe than sorry' policy. Don't kid yourself into thinking this has never been done before.
I'll have to take your word for that one. In any event, I was referring to Rui Nagai's Big O theme, which was an obvious (far more than the Gunbuster montage supposed ripping of Chariots of Fire and that other song) of Queen's Flash theme. The one they blared on Cartoon Network nightly.
Very nice!

You should have directed Gunbuster, it would have been much better.
