  • I was hoping that he'll say, "That I went to this narcissist joy for feeling good about myself to instead realizing I should focus on who I am helping and realized that I just didn't give a fuck and kind of wanted my money back."

  • in one video i just showed that the speaker had calculated something wrong

  • ive noticed that with beggars some beggers get more simply because they are more charming or pleasing or good looking, or more decent than the others...while the others may be more in need..or handicapped. also people help so that one day they hope god will bless them after back...karma...self centered

  • Nice thoughts. The problem starts when Mr. "I" plays the lead role instead of "We". More and more I's lead to eye problems. Thanks for the lovely video.

  • Is IQ the only benchmark? Daniel Goleman has written a series of books on our other quotients like Emotional intelligence, Social intelligence and you may check the out at uread.com

  • Am I the only one who loves the uncontested comparison between Machiavellians and Sociopaths.

  • I certainly hope so.

  • This guy is brilliant but with his 13 minutes on TED he rambles about.

  • Congratulations to Mr. Goleman.

Here (RJ?Brazil) I study Neuroscience for Education and it was very important for everybody!

A note for the people who are "nazi": you definitly deserve live more in this life (Can you handle with your less of dignity?)

    pmafono

  • i agree

  • i'm not sure i get your point. could you expound?

  • estoy haciendo un curso, y necesito escuchar o saber lo que dice el Dr. Goleman

  • por favor pongan la traduccion de los videos, gracias.

  • Por favor coloquen la traduccion de los videos del Dr Goleman

  • I wouldn't have helped the slumped down guy without the shirt on because I would have been afraid that they may be dangerous.

As soon a "normally acting" person would have come along to help the man, I'd be glad to help, seeing that the situation was safe.

Let me also tell you that I'm a small, rather weak girl. Maybe I'd think differently if I was a grown man.

  • I agree with you. I worked in downtown Atlanta when I was 18 - 20 and would try to get to know the homeless people there, sometimes eating and smoking with them. I had 2 knives pulled on me by homeless people and one homeless guy tried to attack me during those 2 years, some of them were just crazy and dangerous.

  • Excuses.

  • makes some sense except the guy had fainted and its hardly a dark alley where anything bad could happen.

  • ur only 15!!!!!!! no way !!!! call ur local newspaper and tell them u read all his books and ur only 15!!!!!!!!! wat a feat!

  • sarcasm?!

  • hahahahaha!

  • LOL

  • Brilliant!

  • What he's describing in that last story is known as the "bystander effect" ...Google it. It's quite interesting.

  • Disturbing more like :P

  • Thanks!!

  • Dude you're deep.

    Respect!

  • there's a really interesting Daniel Goleman dialogue series called "Wired to Connect" which one can listen to free samples of at morethansound dot net.

  • rather than scanning every object, it wouldn't hurt to use the sources of information currently available (internet?) to simply be educated about a product before we buy it.

  • It;s nice to see Dan again after all these years. I was in his Harvard seminar, "Meditation and Altered States of Consciousness", and it was a unique experience. On day one he said, I am going to give you all A's, and you dont have to show uo to get them. I only want you here because you want to buy here. Most of us came every time, and got deeply involved.

  • that was a nice ending, my old psych teacher told me of an experiment where they did the same thing except they gave 100 dollars to whoever was nice enough

  • The talk given DIRECTLY supports Maslow's HoN, so arguing with me on my remarks is quite ridiculous.

I love TED talks, but it is humorous to see how many thumbs down someone can get if a comment is issued that is in any way negative. Get a grip people, just because they are in TED doesn't mean they are the best or brightest, merely that they have an interesting take on something.

  • I am very sorry...and now scarred for life...

  • that's a very good comment. i noticed that too. in one video i just showed that the speaker had calculated something wrong (just a mathematical equasion, can happen to anybody) and i got 6 thumbs down very soon. what's wrong with people?

  • Heh thanks, Maybe tell me which video yours was so I can return the favor.

  • Powerful ending.

  • As a person with Asperger's Syndrome, I have had to learn to converse with others "from scratch." One of the things I learned was that others were more happy to be with me if I asked them questions and focused on their answers. All the while listening, I think of more questions to ask and so on. Basic, I know, but this is essentially what this gentleman is saying.

  • I was that way too VeiledGlory. There is another function of that part of the brain too. I did learn to connect with only one person too. I happily still have the other function. It's self, individual other and _______.

  • True, however do you think that perhaps people just like to talk about themselves? In other words, you would be an equally pleasant person to be with regardless of disease or disorder (except for perhaps very strong B.O.) so long as you listen and ask questions?

  • Lol, this is news to this psychologist? Maslow's hierarchy of needs incorporates this, we first think or ourselves, safety, security, etc and then after all of that is taken care of we move to more philosophical concepts, such as helping others.

Some do go against this, but for the vast majority this is the way the mind works.

  • Hi,

Maslow's pyramid is a construction of the mind. It has never been proved to work. That's why some people will risk their life for "futile" reasons like glory, because "survival" is NOT always a priority when other needs are at stake.

  • "It has NEVER been proved to work" Geez, do you seriously know anything about Maslow or did you simply google him and come to your own asinine conclusions? As for people going against the pyramid structure, he also explains through his work why this occurs also, that value systems can take precedent in the mind and thusly change the structure somewhat. Your point however is moot as we are not discussing survival nor glory but the simple action of helping another.

  • people don't become ministers to help people

  • @Mahoivlich So why do they become ministers in your opinion?

  • @Geraldoatlarge42 Power, authority, to curry favor with their imaginary friend, and some to get access to children. Don't get me wrong there are clergy that want to help people, soldiers that want to save the world, and cops that want to uphold the law.........but then there is the majority. When you have a mega-church hocking self -help merchandise and faith healing, it is obvious you are not in it to help. These are for profit corporations.

  • @Mahoivlich As a secularist, I must protest! Some ministers help altruitsically. Generally, generalizations are not valid.

  • @SIMKINETICS more like few. "Generally, generalizations are not valid." So you just invalidated your own statement. Bananas are yellow, leaves are green, and the sky is blue. One can only get so specific with a few hundred characters. Generalizations are representative of a majority. Not always, but in many cases.

  • @Mahoivlich Notice that I posted twice? Only one of the posts is valid.

  • @Mahoivlich As a secularist, I must protest! Some ministers help altruistically. Generally, generalizations are not valid.

  • very interesting. Psychology owns.
