  • part 4 if you can't encourage and support your OWN!!!You talk of the natural hair community being supportive,ACCEPTING,AND UPLIFTING for blacks where hair is concerned, but you make that VOID by taring down the people trying to bring change about in OUR "community"!once yall admit it the we will see REAL change with blacks that does'nt end with what our hair looks like.**drops the mic**

  • part 3 NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING

  • cont if you are black trying to start a business in general, black folk look DOWN on you cos the think you product are not on the same level with a WHITE OWNED company!!i'm sure many would deny it,but its the truth.what a SHAME!!and blacks wonder why they are in this mess!!!if a white company did all the things i hear ppeople complaining about here,we would'nt hear of it!and i CERTAINLY would'nt stop blacks from shopping there!!what a joke!!!wake the fuss up black people!!the community is

  • Totally agree.i been reading the hair/gossip boards recently, and while i think it is right to be frustrated/mad about extortionate/rising prices/SCAMS(these are the exceptions),i think most have the black taring one another down thing going i their brains, loland we ALL know it!!i don't care what colour you are,if your business is conning people be prepared for their wrath, lol but overall i think it fall down to this:

  • i don't think people are hating...as much as we want to support the black hair businesses, it's hard when the products cost so much and others are cheap. Pantene is not charging 60 dollars for a 8 oz jar. Most of us can buy groceries for what one jar of product cost...not to mention not taking into consideration the spectrum of textures our hair comes in and the diverse needs with the 4 hair type being the most challenging and many of the products not working for us resulting in money lost.

  • I know this vid is over a year old, but I had to comment. How does given your opinion on a brand equivalent to hating? I'm (as well as my circle) cost conscious! I do think these companies are over priced #capitalism@itsbest. I for one will tell a friend not to buy a $38 product, if I know of something cheaper that does the same thing! That's not hating that's being smart!

  • i totally agreeopinions:) great vid!!!

  • (part 2) so i buy it & sister don't. sister started buying sulfate free shampoo's & conditioner & told me they itch her head. a natural hair black lady told me: regular shampoo's dry our hair out! so i listened to sister & lady & i only buy no sulfate shampoo's & conditioners. i get tired of blacks not helping black companies! i only sometimes listen to her natural hair ladies about hair products. i buy & experiment on a lot of hair products now. i ignore blacks that's trying to tear down blacks

  • (part 1) i completely agree with you! when i use a natural hair product that i don't like (which barely occur) i keep my mouth shut & i only tell my sister my reasons for not liking the product. my sister is natural & i'm in the natural process. sister spends a lot more on her hair products & most items than me. when sister use a hair product she don't like she'll tell me her reasons & she'll give me her product. it's a shampoo & conditioner by a natural producer- i love them; but sister don't;

  • It's called BLACK ON BLACK CRIME--it's stupid, ugh.

  • Thanks, You made a good point. When I do find black owned supply stores I try to support them. The other race has rice so why cant we make and sell our own products. We both can make money. I would love to try the higher priced black made products but the price isnt for me right now, maybe in future because I do want them to make it.

  • So true

  • i agree alot of people do hate but i dont like that some companies KNOW their products dont work on lets say 4b hair then lie about it. only being natural for a year i have tried EVERYTHING i have spent too much $. I do only buy black owned products just because the ingredients are better but alot of people do bash its truly sad but i have 2 admit i do look @reviews b4 buying most products though but that bcuz $ is hard to come by lol great topic :)

  • I never assume that CD or MJ is a natural hair product line. I thought they sold hair care products for "curly/kinky" textured hair. No where on either website does it say "natural hair product". I don't think its hatin, most folks are mad cuz the price point. And the price is high cuz of marketing. Think about how much marketing did they have to do to get you do a YT rant? Marketing cost $ and can be 1/2 a company's budget and they gotta make that $ back so we pay the cost. Take care.

  • More than anything, people are going to be people. I dont believe people are hate'n per say... ( this word is used out of context & abused to much). Its the prices that get people. If the price not in your budget then why buy it?

I have to disagree about L'oreal due to that a few months ago, they were in deep trouble with discrimination when it came to not wanting to hire african americans as employees. So there has been complaints like these that have made headlines.

  • I don't think some people are hating. I think they are just frustrated. I love to support black-owned haircare products. But I wish the prices were inexpensive. That's all:). I truly want to support them, but for right now, I can't afford it.

  • @kristenjdec yeah I agree but since i make bath and body products i know some rare ingredients are very expensive and though i would like to add them to my products I know they would raise the prices tremendously! Allot of natural companies try to get THE BEST ingredients because there aren't allot of hair products for us that have really good ingredients. Allot of people don't know that. An affordable natural hairline that I use is Shea Moisture Its sold at target for only $10 for 12oz bottles

  • it;s mediocre style of thinking of most black people!!!! simply jealousy

About the "white" companies selling natural black hair product is because they are one of the best selling products not because the little black companies gave them the idea; it' all about money

ps. i'm black also so i know my people, LOL

  • I've had lots of girls compliment my hair and then grow disappointed when I tell them that I achieved my look using Miss Jessie's or Carol's Daughter. It's insulting to me personally, but it also shows that their dislike for the products has less to do with the results that the products produce and more to do with a general negative attitude towards the brands.

  • I agree with you 100%. I've noticed this phenomenon as well and much of the venom seems to be directed at a few of the "higher-end" lines such as Miss Jessie's and Carol's Daughter. I personally love both product lines. I wonder if some of the frustration has to do with the prices? Either way I do think it is really unfortunate when women who have never tried the products or who know very little about them, go out of their way to criticize the brand. It's very bandwagon-y...

  • @LaNaturalista What makes MJ and CD (higher-end)as you said! I love CD myself, but I wouldn't call her products higher-end!

  • THANK YOU for making this video!!! I've been thinking about this for a while because I've seen SO MUCH negativity flying around as well. Like SERIOUS negative comments and I'm just like WOW.. it really blows me away. Thanks for spreading the word. I'm totally in support of ALL of these companies people are bashing and just the natural hair movement in general. this kind of negativity pulls us apart and drags us down. more power to you alexis

  • Hey I hear Kinky Curly is getting ready to hit Target's Shelves! I'm super excited and can't wait! Keep doing great vids, I love your tutorials and informative messages. God Bless You.

  • I think it's unfortunate to charge $45 dollars for a jar of hair product. Most of the community can not afford those prices. I can, but I refuse. I would love to support, but I can't help but to feel robbed. The prices encouraged me to make my own products. I don't sell them, but for the price of one product, i can make all of my products that will last for months.

I understand your stance, but I do think they should re-think some of the prices. The can be adjusted.

  • Lexi I thank you for this video!! It was very much needed. We do have a tendency to "over-bash" these companies that are coming out for our "hair-sake" when others never bothered to give it a second thought (and now they see money). Look at how long some of these companies have been in business and are just getting recognized...WE made that happen. That alone proves that there is power in our voices, but we can ALSO break down so much to the point where we may have nothing to choose from.

  • Those companies PAY bloggers to Dis-en-franchise our communities. Dah

  • I'm so glad you talked about this!

  • I think you are misusing the word "hate." I don't think it's even crabs in the barrel. Just because you bash one company doesn't mean you don't support and promote 10 others. So I don't think you are making a fair assessment at all. I think you are being just as judgmental and hateful as the people you are talking about.

  • @ILoveItKinky Im talking about the people that deliberately try to mess up someones biz by going from forum to forum and blog to blog to bad talk some companies...Im not talking abt everyone who has an opinion. I think youre reading too deep into what I am saying..Everyone has an opinion and thats fine but most people with opinions dont go on a bashing rampage either lol

  • @LexiWithTheCurls I think I know what specific instance you are talking about...and yes I agree with you on that!!! I was talking with another blogger and I was like DANG I don't even like them but I wouldn't put that much energy into it! However, I do empathize with those instances b/c the younger women going natural are so impressionable and there's a need to spread knowledge. I just want to make sure women are aware of what they are buying...ya know?

  • One of the things that black hair companies have going for them is that personal touch. They put their names and faces out their to prove that they're just like "us" that they started out on the forums and in their kitchens. Miss Jessie's isn't L'Oreal and they capitalize on that. The flip side is, when they make their shady business moves (like using higher percentages of cheaper ingredients while maintaining the price W/O WARNING)...they get personal backlash. They can't have it both ways.

  • I think when people voice their opinions about companies, large or small, it keeps the company on their toes. Feedback keeps companies aware of what's going on and how their products are being perceived, if the marketing is sending the message or image that intended. I have send comment directly to companies it I liked or disliked their product. I have told people about companies that I like because or their product.

  • @TangledWeb I think that is awesome that you take feedback directly to the company. That is whats important. They probably appreciate that.

  • @LexiWithTheCurls I've gotten samples and coupons from companies, they want to hear about their products. This was with big company, so if they're listening it's worth a try with small companies. People should go directly to company websites with just as much enthusiasm (as they have with going through social networking sites and forums) to make companies pay attention and get change. Both methods can work together, if done right.

  • Lexi, I respect your opinion, and I do not agree that people should bash companies for their ingredients and their prices. If you don't like the ingreds/prices, just don't buy it. Easy as that. However, I, as well as many other women I converse with via the internet, do take issue with dishonest business practices, and I think those need to be put out into the open so at least people know what they are buying, and who they are buying from. It's not hating if it's the truth...just saying.

  • @denimpixie That's the realest sh*t wrote in the comments section.

  • @denimpixie I missed something. Some companies have dishonest business practices? Im not sure what you are referring too. I havent come across any companies that claim one thing but are doing another. Just because one might "assume" something, if it didn't come out the horses mouth then it can't be dishonest.

  • @LexiWithTheCurls If that's the case, I understand your video so much better!! I'm not even talking about assuming...I'm talking about straight up lying. I had an issue with a company where they posted on their YT about their prods not containing certain ingreds when I knew that was a LIE (I double checked the ingreds via Curl Mart)...when I confronted them (in a nice manner) they chose not to answer me and deleted their comment that contained the lie.

  • @denimpixie wwhhaat? Yeah thats no good. YEs that is wrong if companies are doing that,. I hadnt heard about anything like that. Thanks for sharing

  • @denimpixie EXACTLY

  • I've been natural since 1993 back then there was nothing! I used grease, gel and Mane&Tale shampoo. Personally I am happy that we now have choices! I haven't tried Miss Jessie's because it was sold out at Target. I was sad for myself but happy for the company since there is a high demand for it. These are black business women we should be supportive.W/O them Pantene wouldn't be thinking about us. I feel like if it doesn't work, don't hate try something else. We should be happy we now have choices

  • @Lexiwiththecurls..I really would not worry about what people say. I understand it makes you feel like its the "crabs in the barrel" syndrome however, these companies are doing well. Kinky Curly stays off the shelves at whole foods here in LA. I just went the other day and the worker there said they just restocked and it was gone the same day! So don't cry for them, they aiight! LOL

  • @passiongyrl I feel u but maybe someone like u or I would want to start a business one day in hair....it is super discouraging.

  • I'm so glad I watched this video. I'm still kind of new to the whole natural thing so I've been using negative reviews as a way to keep from trying products that deep down inside I know I really want to try. Thanks for bringing this to light. You can't believe everything you read on here, and I am definitely just going to use trial and error and continue to support black owned natural hair companies : ) unless it doesn't work lol then that's another thing.

  • I really appreciate this video because I experience these comments when people ask me what I put in my hair. I would have stayed natural my entire life if there were products to help take care of my hair when I was younger. I feel as if these companies are helping break the barrier for Blackwomen to wear there natural hair and be accepted by society and corporate America.

  • I hear a lot of people say that certain products shouldn't be so high due to some of the ingredients, but contrary to popular belief many people love products with mineral oil and use them frequently. So at the end the of day Lexi, my theory is some people are just mad because they can't afford it. You know that feeling that we sometimes get when want something but don't have the means LOL! If you don't like the product, just don't buy it right:-) Lets support AA businesses!

  • OMG!! you are so right! I stopped shopping in Asian American shops, they have no respect for our culture, but sell us "Our Beauty Products". I thats why I would support any African- American owned business. anyday.!!!!

  • I believe in the saying,"You get what you pay for",and good products are going to cost more. Organic food cost more than cheap unhealthy food,so the products which are pure are costly. There are bargains online for good products for a lower price, therefore;looking around for them will help you get more for your money. I am glad there are companies trying to be more responsible, and show they care about our hair. I got the whole set of "Design Essentials for 32.00.

  • I did try to buy Miss Jessies, I got the smallest container of curly pudding my hair sucked it up in one application. I compared the ingredients to cantu shea butter leave in its the same for 4 bucks and is a huge container. I thought they would lower the price when they got to target but they didnt so its gathering dust on the shelves here in my city.

  • @juicyjen3000

lol same here went to target yesterday evening & miss Jessies baby buttercreme was collecting dust on the shelves also!

  • I also believe in supporting good black business. It's out there, and usually doesn't come cheaply b/c black business is treated as less marketable. I don't feel like many general stores can cater to my needs. If I had to go to a salon I would prefer the black natural salon. So far I support Nubian Heritage but I am looking for black owned products that have mostly decent ingredients. But if the price is too high I may have to settle for other things, being a college student and all . . .

  • I understand if people don't like the prices, ingredients or if a specific product didn't agree with their hair. What I don't understand is the malicious PERSONAL comments to the point of slander toward the owners of the company. When you start calling the owners' foul names, that is wayyy over the top!

  • Wow, never knew this was happening.

  • My main concern are the high prices for those companies. But, I do appreciate more blacks starting hair businesses...

  • I love certain lines, but i do not like lines that have mineral oil, ie miss jessies, lmao i guess i have hated on the line, not hated on it, but if it was cheaper, i would try it, but since it is expensive and has mineral oil in it, i wont buy it, but as a gift eyyyyy

  • thank you and if it wasn't for those black companies many of us curly heads would give up on our natural hair, perm it and go bald. thank you to all the natural hair black companies who care about us and gave us a voice.

  • AND whether you like the bashing or not, these "white companies" are going to see where the money is, RECREATE, and offer it at a cheaper price in mass production. So, it would behoove these natural companies to listen to their consumer, before they find themselves in a situation where they are being underpriced by a bigger competitor, and going out of buisiness.

  • @Letyoursoulglow1 Thats gonna happen anyway...whether they lower the prices or not...If all these companies only charged $5...the big white companies would make similar products and charge $3 ...It will happen regardless

  • I don't hate on any products wish I could try everything I wanted to. I just don't ever see myself paying 30 to 50 on a hair product. One of the reasons I went natural was to stop spending that kind of money in the salon!

  • I don't really feel like someone who states that they don't like a product is "hating" or "crabs in a barrel" or "jumping on a bandwagon" . It's an opinion. I love that black people are doing for ourselves and filling a void that major hair companies have not capitalized on. But there IS a problem with the upcharge on products for natural hair. It's almost as offensive as going to the salon and being upcharged because you've decided to not relax your hair.

  • @Letyoursoulglow1 Im not referring to people stating they dont like something. As stated in the video, I am referring to the people who go from blog to blog, forum, to forum that bash companies when they get no personal gain from it. Of course everyone is entitled to their opinion. Im not talking about those people

  • @Letyoursoulglow1 like u stated it is unfortunate salons charge more money to us...its because its a niche market and we are the underdogs so they can charge us more. Salons that cater to relaxed ladies, there is one on every corner so they cant afford to charge too much

  • Hi Lexi I loved U & Fam on blog tv last night.. But yea like I said I think we as black ppl we shld support OUR ppl,I do think with they big hype of everybody going natural.. it 's a big huge price hype going on.. cos natural is the hot new/old thing. I thnk we should be pound of our black companies..who is there for us..and for so many years we didn't have the products we got now. I do thnk the prices cud come down, but idk we don't have to get the name brand..in order to stay natural.Love ya!

  • I have a friend that has her own natural hair co. She recently had a disgruntled customer. The customer told owner of a company, that she(customer) is on several forums and will tell EVERYONE about the bad product. It was a whipped shea that had melted in the summer heat! My friend made it right but the threat of what the customer said really got to my friend!

  • @NylaCoils of course...people do it all the time..These businesses understand that what we say online CAN have an effect on their business. Its not like going to all the forums talking abt Pantene...Pantene will NOT hurt from us talking about it on the blogs but a AA company ..it could affect them

  • Thanks for this post. Unless a person has tried to go into business themselves, they just don't have an appreciation for the costs in both time and money that a person goes to to produce, market and deliver a product. We should definitely let companies know what is working and what is not working. I want the Carol's Daughters, Karen's Body Beautifuls and Miss Jessie's to stay in business. Cause they'll listen when the Pantene's won't. That's my rant! Peace.

  • @QueenBee1118 Very well said

  • Sidebar: Bentley needs attention...lol...I did not know that this was going on. This is very unfortunate. I am just getting into using all natural hair products from black owned businesses. The only thing that I don't like is the wait time when ordering online. I need instant gratification.

  • @brnize1969 I think all of the smaller companies will get to that point..once they start expanding their employees etc.. Yeah I hate to go on sites and what I want isnt avail or it cost 10 to ship at 10 dollar item or it takes 2 weeks to mail, etc..in due time

  • As far as prices for companies..I understand completely where you're coming from about the blk owned companies being charged more. And honestly I don't have a problem paying for a higher priced product that works & has good ingredients...but when a product has the #2 ingredient as mineral oil (parafinium liquidum) I do think that it's a bit crazy for the price to be so high..but even still I would never just bash the co. b/c of that. It's completely uncalled for. I'd just choose not to use it.

  • Hey Lexi! I understand where you're coming from completely. I think that if a person just doesn't like a product then it's ok to voice that...but there's no need to just bash a company. Now I can say that I've received extremely poor customer service from a couple companies that I've ordered from...I didn't bash them, but I did just give my experience and let people decide on their own if they wanted to use them...even still gave an honest opinion of the product (which was good).

  • I am newly natural and I would love to try some of these products but I haven't for several reasons. I think the main reason is price. I have played around with cheaper products and gotten good results. So I stay with these products. Another major reason is that these products are not available where I live. I know I can order them online. But I am impatient and want to try things right then. LOL Also my local beauty supply stores don't carry and have never heard of these products. :(

  • Thank You!!!!

  • See, I didn't know this was happening. I get your point, there is no point in bashing other natural hair companies. One thing for sure, natural hair companies will always have me as a consumer...I swear by their products and always promote them.

  • @exoticeyes32 I agree 100% as well. I didn't know this was happening. Didn't think it was THAT serious. My hair prefers 90%+ natural ingredients (but my wallet doesn't lol) my hair doen't react well to the pantene and those other companies as I wish it would. Even if I go to one of those "natural hair companies" and I use something and I don't like it, i'll say why I didn't like it and i'll suggest what hair "type" it could be used best for. I won't bash anyone.

  • Thank you for this video Lexi, I agree with you 100%. As a relatively new natural I have been shocked at some of the hate I have witnessed towered some of these companies online as though the owners have done something personal to these individuals. Let us applaud the women who are working very hard to cater to our needs whether their products work for you personally or not, and try to keep our natural hair community positive and uplift each other. Let's banish the crab mentality once and fo

  • Amen!

  • I've only tried the Curl Enhancing Smoothie by Shea Moisture. I love it so much that I've been singing its praises since I got it. I want to try more from their line, but unfortunately the products aren't as available as the regular stuff like Herbal Essences, Tresseme, etc. I've heard ppl say bad things about Miss Jessie's, Uncle Funky's Daughter, & others, but I always try a product on my own hair first before I make a judgment & I don't bash them when I don't like them just b/c I didn't like.

  • Comment removed

  • I don't hate them, but some of their prices are just freaking ridic! Most people cannot afford such prices. I do get excited every time I see miss jessies, jane carter, and others in target. On one hand, maybe the products are so expensive because of the ingredients. Anyhoo, I have bought from kinky curly, and oyin handmade and will support products that are good for my hair.

  • I completely agree. I've made a vow to support black owned business as much as I can. How else can we improve the black community if not through its businesses? And its not only black own business that we should be supporting but business promoting healthy practices towards natural hair care.

  • I don't think it is hating when someone states that a product is outlandishly priced as consumers we can put companies on notice when we speak out about pricing or content or whatever it is about their product that we do not like and if they want to keep us consuming they will make adjustments. I personally was appalled at the price of some of the "curly" products that were for sale at my local Target but at a recent visit said products are now 75% off! Why? because they are not selling!

  • @trjonessimca and I'd like to add Idon't believe its a crab in the barrel mentality to criticize an ethnic company there are "black owned" companies making similar products that manage to price there products at a resonable amount. Sure there are haters and they will abound and search out places to let their hate be known but I believe they are few. Most of us just want a good product that does what it claimsand to and pay a fair price for it.

  • @trjonessimca people need take into account the cost of ingredients, the quality of the ingredients, packaging and TIME! If you guys dont like the prices then dont buy it. Today i went into target and saw that one of the miss jessies products was almost $60. I said " wow thats allot of money. too much for me to spend" Then i headed right over to purchase some shea moisture products. But Im not going to bash her or get mad because of the prices she set. ( Im not saying you do this)

  • I don't understand why people are hating on natural hair products. I believe the person whose doing this just wants to be apart of the natural hair community of some sort, but instead of doing so, this person chooses to hate. They have to be doing something great for someone to hate, so I really don't see this as being a bad thing.

  • My reasons for going natural are deeper than simply the price for products. As I grow in loving my hair and black identity through my hair, I think it's important to support those companies with similar values and intentions. Unfortunately, Pantene and other billion dollar companies are too big for new natural companies to compete with. I save my money and put it where there is love and community.

  • Thats why we have to support on another and keep our encouragement going. This is sad. I support everyone.

  • I remember that comment all too well. We found out about each others blogs because of that comment about Miss Jessie's.

  • Excellent point...

  • Most people seem to have a problem with miss jessie's and others with kinky curly. I believe that a 2 ounce product costs about $7 and most other companies sell the same for around $5. For me, I don't have to use as much of miss jessie's so the price equals out anyway. Also, I try not to use mineral oil, but the curly pudding works on my hair and I love it. You don't know what kinds of business loans these companies have and distribution deals they are getting.

  • I am like you, I try the products anyway regardless of the review. I am soooo excited that there are several black own companies out there. My intentions are to try all of them (companies) at some point. I have given products to people that did not work for me. I NEVER said a negative thing about these companies, I would say it did not work well on my hair, but it may work for you. I am glad you addressed this issue and hope people think about their intentions. Great Job Lexi!

  • One thing I never understand is why people order natural handmade products and expect them in a week. Then when they don't get them they are ready to make posts and all that crap calling out the vendor making them look bad. This stuff is not just sitting on the shelves waiting to be thrown in a box and shipped next day. That really baffles me.

  • i bet the comment you got began "thoughts on miss jessies products..." or something like that. i see that comment EVERYWHERE. i will support any natural hair company .as long as their products help my hair and the owners are HONEST about their product. youre always in fam's blogtv so you KNOW which dishonest companies im talking about lol

  • @mcamurray lol :-) Very true. Thanks for your comment.

  • @LexiWithTheCurls lol you didnt answer my ? though. WAS that the comment that you got?!

  • @mcamurray Yea lol...I got that comment too!

  • Haha, my puppy is barking back at your puppy!!! .. I understand your point, and it is unfortunate. I appreciate HONEST feedback on the products that ppl try and review. It gives me an idea of how I might like it, and whether or not it's worth the money to even try. But it's really not that serious - to "bash" a company. Unless - they are scammers. And I know that there are some by personal experience. And in that case - I would warn all of my natural hair sisters/brothers :0)

  • You make an excellent point. I have noticed this too. I'm glad that i am a free thinker. In my journey band wagonism has not hindered me from trying high quality products. Yes, they cost more but you pay for what you get. The quality is better than the mass produced brands. Also, ther personal attacks are RIDIC! it makes me angry not just with hair but even with actors or musicians ect. to see someone commenting or criticing the person and not their work or product!

  • This is a great vid, Lexi. I am one of those type of people that's motivated by price. However, that didn't stop me from trying Kinky Curly, Miss Jessie's and Uncle Funky's Daughter. I would never hate on the company, the owner, or the product because what doesn't work for me may very well work for someone else.

  • I posted that i did not like a particular product before and received several replies telling me I needed to be more specific about why I did not like the product. One person replied that I should not say anything if I was not going to go into detail about what i did not like about the product. I felt like they wanted me to write a thesis or something.

  • ppl do bash those 'big' companies that u speak of, I hear many bad things about both the corporate companies dat u listed.. i think ppl jus simply state their opinion n discus the reason they do not like it. some ppl are also jus extra in nature. I think the bigger point to be made is the fact that ppl base their buying practices on others experiences rather than doing their own research.

  • this is such a great video, we as black people need to remember how to support and build each other up. thats our downfall. we complained when the white companies didnt bother to cater to our hair, and now we hatin on the companies that are trying to cater to and help us in learning about and caring for our beautiful hair, its like enough already

  • MAN!! now im seein all these products with olive oil all of a sudden.. lol i was like hmm. i personally LIKE natural hair products all of them are NOT expensive for example Oyin handmade.com products are completely affordable for me and i love them. u gotta find out for yaself. and everybody got samples. yea u can find alternates. Aint nobody gonna supprt us but us, its always been like that

  • Some rant on them to bring them down with out the common sense of why they r pricey, but many just simply dont want 2 pay that much. I do understand why their pricing is so high though. Its all about demand. I don't use the products because of the prices, but I do suggest them to other people who may be interested. I must say, though, I was excited when I walked in Target and saw all the black owned hair lines, because that's telling me that in the next year or so their prices *might* creep down

  • ..and if their ingredients look good (because I've never checked), I may give them a try. Nonetheless I can appreciate a black owned company trying to make their name in the hair product world.

  • Lexi, this is so timely!!!!!! I am so tired of the same people complaining about products and owners.I've read people comments where they've called the owners out of their names....why? I say don't buy it, if you don't like it! But please stop singing the same old tune, I'm tired of the negativity.

    Thank you for this one!

  • I think its more about price. I recently made my own homade hair butter cream with similar ingredients and it didnt cost me $25 or $30 for one jar...the more they sell the lower the cost so the frustration from consumers is somwhat justified. Whats happening is companies see that we spend alot to make or keep our hair nice and they are running with it.

  • i agree with what you say. To be honest I don't see why people bash but it just may be their frustration because there is so much HYPE about a product and that person does not get the results they expect. However, It is also about trial and error....And people tend to forget that what works for one persons hair may not work for someone else. Miss Jessie's doesn't work for my hair. I will not purchase it again. Simple as that. Lol not gonna bash them..

  • Also, what I found myself caught up in as a new natural was that if I purchased this product my curls were gonna magically look like the owners of these companies completely forgetting that these ARE mixed chics for real and DNA and genetics do not come in a jar. Just had to keep it real for ME!!

  • @tjbmom123 that is sooo true. I think alot of people look at the owners of these companies and get upset when they use the product and their hair doesnt look like that. I went to this event and the owner of KC was there and this girl asked her how she gets ringlets like hers! im like ummmm genetics!! lol But I sooo agree. People get upset when they compare their hair

  • @tjbmom123

so true...i am a mixed chick with type 4 hair so that stereotypical image doesn't even fit all mixed & multiracial people. I do feel that certain companies are pushing a certain type of look, maybe not consciously but the meta message is that using their goop will make your curls or kinks more tame & 'acceptabl'e. I've only tried Oyin so far since I already know what my hair can and cannot do. I do feel bad for newly natural, confused or afro-ashamed people who get taken in.

  • Good points... It's like they keep a paragraph ready to be copied and pasted...LOL.. I've actually experienced that with comments where there was an identical comment on more than one video of the same type or brand.. I found that strange.. But yes, there is a fine line between bashing and giving an honest review of dislike...

  • I would have loved to support some of our black owned companies and one of the first products that I purchased when I became natural was the kccc but the price is waayy to expensive for my wallet and Miss Jessies is out of the question. I alwaysfound that I received great results with the .99 Suave tropical coconut conditioner and called it a DAY!

  • The reason why kinky curls mj, curls products cost so much is because of the ingredients that are in the product because it is organic. Loreal and pantene are not organic

And the use different type of chemicals to make he product work... I will continue to support natural hair companies!!! Thanks lexi for this comment because people lovvve hating!

  • Nothing but the truth, Lexi. I unsubscribed from a YT channel because of the blatant bashing of products that simply did not work for the reviewer's hair. Needlessly complaining about products and using them once and saying they don't work is such a turn-off. Thanks for all you're doing to keep us informed and providing honest feedback :-)!

  • I come from a french Caribbean island where the black crab syndrome is also THE rule... From my personal experience, I noticed that between women, this behavior is even worse. This is not surprising since women were (and often are) pushed to survive of the fittest instead of shared survival. I guess the best way to go around it is to create awareness, sharing knowledge (so sharing power, coz power is knowledge) as you do. It is a deep issue, but people slowly realize that. I mean I hope so.

  • Dont get me wrong,I love the idea of blk bus and support them.I actually referred someone to Ms.Jessies today,so I dont bash them as people or even their product. Its not for me because I dont use mineral oil and I dont like to spend over $20 for a product. My only issue is that the blk community by and large is approx 40%working class and in support of the natural hair mvmt I would think that they would try to produce products that fall in line with the majority of their market not a select few.

  • My issue is that like you said, newly naturals ARE very impressionable and alot of times are left under the misconception that they have to spend a small fortune to care for their hair.Ive never tried ms.J or Curls and wont try KCCC again because of the price and the ingredients.I believe our hair should be just as affordable as anyone elsesThe only affordable blk product Ive used is Qhemet which I love. I dont understand why non-blk owned sm bus like EO uses superior product for half the price.

  • So glad u did this video. Was reading alot of blogs and forums today with so many woman bashing companies for no reason.

  • Sounds like these people think they're helping someone by bad-mouthing black companies. And truth be told some ingredients people fearfully avoid (mineral oil) are NOT the devil. Like another commenter said, don't feed into the hype and do your own research. Also, it's funny how (black) people don't have a problem with things until (black) people start to make them; just my observation looking between L'Oreal and Miss Jessies, for example.

  • @Jassyt9008 really? L'Oreal costs $3.99 for a hair mask condish and Ms. Jessies costs $26.99 I dont think the ownership is the issue here. I understand sm bus cant lwr their products to that of mass producers however, at the $30 mark I want some high end ingredients, not petrolatum and mineral oil that I can buy in any product at the bss for under $5

  • I don't go on hair blogs much, but I am on YouTube a lot, and I can honestly say I've seen hate but the positive overwhelmingly outweighs the bad. The crab mentality will always exist. Hopefully, those of us who do not think this way will not be silent, allowing our purchasing power to speak LOUDLY in support of our buisnesses.

  • I think most people are just frustrated with the prices, which is why I think Patene, Loreal, Tresemme have come out with lines to cater to women with naturally curly/kinky hair. I do feel they are getting pressure from the Black natural hair companies, but they are filling the void among the consumers by making products with eye-catching ingredients more affordable. Its no secret Black people spend a lot of money on hair products, most people just want more for their buck.

  • @ButterflyKZA I completely get that. We all want to pay less money. I just dont believe that they are all trying to "get us for our money".

  • It's like a computer virus...

  • You have a point there sis. I have been natural since my teenage years and never saw so many great products out for curls as I see now and that is because these smaller companies have been catering to our specific hair needs while the bigger ones weren't for a while, it is ashame that there are people out there hating but whenever someone tries to do something positive it is always faced with opposition....when I want to try a new product I sometimes read reviews first so yea gotta watch out

  • @thebeautifulcoils and that is perfectly alright that you dont like products with mineral oil or that you dont want to spend over a certain price for products. Everyone has the ingredients that dont work well in their hair and some people choose to spend more money on other things

  • I really enjoyed this video :D ! Some of the people bashing could very well be othr companies trying to downplay each other to get more customers, that's why no matter what we really shouldn't feed into the hype or hate just do your own research, contact the company when in doubt and decide for yourself.

  • @lilloki83 hmmmm good point...I thought abt that too ;-)

  • I think that the main issue is price. I can go to a traditional white all natural company and get products cheaper then go to a black owned company with partial natural products. I think that there is a lot of angry with these "natural" black owned companies because they are making products that a lot of people can't afford. You can't make products for a certain community with insane prices and expect a lot of support.

  • @shamonica38663 Unfortunately Black companies dont get the same deals on ingredients/packaging/etc...as white companies. White companies can afford to sell the same thing cheaper because they get better rates on items

  • @shamonica38663 I agree with the price issue. My solution is not to bash though. I just focus on products that I can afford.

  • @teeahtate Yes I also don't believe in bashing. But i do understand the anger and frustration that some people may have for these companies. I won't to support black owned business. Problem is i can't afford most of them.

  • I feel the same way which why I rarely read the hair blogs or watch videos. It's a turn off to read people comments however they dont stop me from wanting to try products. Yes most of the Black owned lines are pricey but they are worth the money. Basically, if you dont have anything nice to say then don't say it at all.

  • I think yes people have tons of time to go to blog to twitter and what not. The issue is people tend to get confused. Yes your hair is natural chemical free but the products that you use on it does not. Unless you are using just essential oils and butters then there is bound to be some form or processing or chemicals which people don't understand. Stay curly mama

  • They Have No Life That's all it is ....

  • I applaud the natural hair companies...I think what most of them are doing is great. However, I think many people have an issue with some of these Black companies basically taking advantage of people. No hair cream should ever cost $50.00...especially if the ingredient's aren't all that great. Why can't some of these companies provide great products at great prices? It just seems like greed to me. Your business can still do well and you don't have to charge a ridiculous amount. Just my $.2.

  • @vdubb2012 I feel what you are saying but unfortunately black companies don't get the same deals on ingredients as white companies do..especially the major white companies. Just like weave...asians get better deals wholesale and blacks dont get the same deals..Thats why most black owned businesses charge more than the white company selling the same thing next door.

  • @LexiWithTheCurls

I see what you're saying...I knew that about the asians and weave, but didn't know that about ingredients. However, there are still Black companies that offer great products at reasonable prices while there are those charging ridiculous prices. If mineral oil is one of your main ingredients, you should not be charging $50.00 for something. It's one thing if you're using ALL natural ingredients, it's another thing if you're not, but still charging an arm and a leg.

  • @vdubb2012 It happens in every industry from restaurants to hair..we dont get the same deals or inside connects...My whole thing is even though something that has mineral oil in it as the main ingredient...if there are say 25 ingredients in a product who's to say it doesnt run down like this(1) 10% (2) 10% (3) 7.5% (4) 7.4% (5) 7% and so on... that means that that 2nd ingredient only accounts for 10% out of 100%. We dont research to understand is my point. I/we dont know the figures

  • @LexiWithTheCurls Yeah I think that the price is the issue that people have with these companies. Some hair cream with ingredients that are not even natural costing $50 is kind of ridiculous. I understand that you have to pay for the ingredients and all that but that is still kind of steep. Even with that said I will not down a company. If I dont like a product I will just say it may not work for me but it may work for you and still encourage others to try it.

  • @vdubb2012 I agree completely. I will not deliberately go hunting down videos and blogs to complain and put other companies down, I am not going to stand for a product costing so much, when I can buy another one much cheaper and get the same results, or make my own. To me, that does seem like just greed and taking advantage of the fact that other naturals will buy their product because we are already desperate for something to work as it is.

  • Bashing on hair products?

do you people have anything else to do with your lives?

  • So, true. Unfortunately, some people just like to keep up mess...that's probably just their personality. I am the same way, I like to try things out for myself.

  • Hey Lexi, ITA with you. I posted that article on lhcf from WWD. Even if I don't personally use every one of these black owned products, I'm still supportive and happy that they exist. If we don't support them, who will? Sad to see the effects of slavery trickling down to haircare. Our community has a lot of work to do. Thanks for bringing awarness to this issue.

  • i agree :)

  • Kudos for bringing this topic to the table, as this needed to be said. My hope is that we can rally together and uplift our Natural Hair companies that have provided us with products designed for textured hair lovelies and gents! If we don't we'll be back where we were when I went natural 18yrs ago...with minimal to no products designed for naturally textured hair.
