Perhaps he didn't speak English, or knew and was afraid of Stride's attacker.

Ok a small comb is kinda weak, but half a cake? how can you say no to half a cake? BTW I loved the writing on that last guy, it was full of weird details, like the whole deal with the 2 guys named Joseph (and the small comb). I don't think I've ever seen a script where 2 characters have the same name outside of some kind of comedy sketch.
