  • Great job. XR1 Multicore or Sportsman?

  • Did you roll over you camera at 3:10?

  • does any body know how much hp a borla xr1 racing exhaust adds with a straight pipe

  • best sounding sti ever

  • Got shivers down my back

  • u got the full exhaust or just the muffler?

  • How many inches wide is the down piping?

  • you installed the intake in a parking ?

  • @JUSBEN120 Haha, no. Did it in the garage.

  • eastern Oregon?

  • @yblate1 No. In Northern NJ. I don't have the car anymore, though.

  • can someone please explain to me what a catback exhaust does? thanks

  • @avalanch08

A Catback exhaust doesn't really do anything other than provide sound. There are very minimal, even unoticable gains from just a catback. If you want gains, you'd have to get a full turboback setup. This includes a catback in addition to a downpipe. However, a turboback setup will need to be tuned by some means. The most common way would be the Cobb Accessport.

  • @ItWasDestiny Dude your trippin, turbo cars gain very good power from just a cat back and you can easily tell the difference with it...Turbo cars respond great to even the most minor mods!!! i should know i have one!

  • @TheJdecka

I'm not going to argue. :) I know what I know is right. It's not like I have a STi or anything and haven't thoroughly researched it. Go on anyforum such as Nasioc or IWSTi and you'll see that catbacks provide very minimal power. Maybe it does for other turbo cars, but for WRXs and STis, it does not.

  • @ItWasDestiny Only 10 to 15whp...yeah thats not that much huh?? On my 07 STI I got about 20whp without tune!! Turbo cars gain ALOT with exhaust mods, know how turbos work and then you can comment.

  • @ItWasDestiny Only 10 to 15whp...yeah thats not that much huh?? On my 07 STI I got about 20whp with a short ram and HKS hi-power catback without tune!! Turbo cars gain ALOT with exhaust mods, know how turbos work and then you can comment.

  • @TheJdecka

Okay man whatever you say is completely right. Congrats on the car and your super gains. It just shows how awesome you are having a shortram intake without a tune. :) Apparently you know a lot about STis!

  • @TheJdecka Sorry man you are wrong. I've dyno'd my 04 STi before and after my Invidia N1catback and there was zero difference. IF you do a downpipe as well which you should.....and then a tune you will see incredible gains, as I am up over 315 whp now compared to 240 stock. (more than just exhaust now haha) but with just the dp and catback and tune it was about 290 whp which is damn good

  • @lilstahlly22 Dude you are smoking crack bro, Cat back exhaust are HALF of your exhaust as a whole, you must have got the N/A exhaust or the dyno fucked up or something...i mean common dude iv owned MANY turboed cars in my lifetime including my 07 STi, like i said just a catback and intake NO DP i gained about 20whp with NO tune...you might want to check to make sure you have a 3inch straight through exhaust too...

  • @TheJdecka Half of an exhaust system doesn't do anything. If you have a hose with one kink in it, does the hose flow very well?? You are right that on some turbo cars you can see huge gains from a catback, however on our cars the downpipe is the key thing that is restricting flow, not the cat back. Join NASIOC and read a ton there is a lot of good stuff on there man you can learn a lot. I'm not ripping on you just saying, because ANY tuner on NASIOC will tell you the same thing......

  • @lilstahlly22 and just cause some one posts on a forum doesnt make them correct. a well designed catback will increase power, mabey not by a dramatic amount but they arent worthless as a power adder...

  • @wtfyourafuckindoosh Dude the logic just doesn't make sense. The STI catback can flow plenty of air for the stock engine. The part of the exhaust that holds it back is the downpipe with the cat. Changing what happens after that "clog" in the exhaust is not going to impact performance. Once you remove that stock downpipe and increase the flow there, THEN the exhaust system has great gains. If you all want to pretend your car got more power, go for it.

  • @lilstahlly22 you know what you dumb fucking troll you can believe what you want. the sti cat back is mediocre. any well designed catback with reduce the pumping losses,i.e the horsepower used to push exhaust gasses from the engine, therefore freeing up power. i have seen it proven and if you think its shit then obviously you think you know more than dudes with engineering degrees. i dont think you do. the gains are not always significant but they are there and they always add more efficiency.

  • @TheJdecka I might get an 05 STI in a bit. I want to know if the HKS DP paired with the HKS Hi Power CBE is a good setup. I also love the sound of the STI's stock BPV, but what excentuates the sneeze?

  • im really supprised how meny prople dont upgrade there down pipe cant wait to get my turbo back

  • ???? *lol*

  • would you prefer the K&N filter?

  • come here catty ha i love thes cars

  • sounds like farting crap

  • was hat der auspuff mit dem offenen luftfilter zutun? o.O

  • man thanks for posting.. i tink i know where i what i want to go with.... not too loud..

  • I can hear the difference. Nicer smoother purr. It's not louder I find just more defined. I love those Boxer Engines :)

  • with the intake there is a great deep purr... im mean, more then it had before. I love the sound!

  • lol id laugh so hard if u ran over ur camera

  • what is the best cold air you can get?

  • i hear that perrin says you dont need a tune with their intake aem kinda iffy anything else their all about the same and a good tune is kinda mandatory with any addition though =/

  • yeah install a BOV and ruin your ECU...

how 'bout a bpv or a bov with a blow thru setup so the mas monitors airflow AFTER the turbo/ bov and doesnt run lean. -w/ that same bov sound i believe..

  • @dwnrety1 Huh? The issue with adding a bov w/o a tune is that it will run rich in between shifts, not lean. The air that would normally be recirculated into the pre-turbo intake tract is instead vented to atmosphere. The ECU has no way of accounting for this w/o tune. If you tune for it, it's not a big deal.

  • im pretty sure you cant tune the ecu so that it doesnt go screwy between shifts..

and even if you could im sure it would be easier to move the mass airflow sensor so the turbo blows through it before it goes into the engine.

-bov stays, really no need for a tune more money in your pocket..

besides whys everyone want bovs? lol you almost never hear a car that has a turbo without a bov and alot of them sound pretty close to the same...

  • @dwnrety1 Firstly, yes you can tune for it. Speed density, or yes, a blow through MAF. Secondly, read this: siegelracing(dot)com(slash)bov(dot)htm

  • yeah i knew all that already and thats pretty much saying what i said.. that bovs are usually bad unless setup correctly cause BOV=turbo needing to re-spool, the engine runs "sick rich" ,and you backfire

BPV=none of the above mentioned problems..

  • @dwnrety1 Well what I originally replied to was your comment "Install a BOV and ruin your ECU", and if you already knew all of the info on the website you must have been just joking then. Hard to tell on the internet. Because of course, it would not ruin your ecu.

  • it would ruin your ECU after long enough if you just threw the BOV on and just threw caution to the wind... -which is what people usually do unless they know what their doing...

  • install a bov that would make it sound even better

  • Can you put these parts on a 1997 Subaru Impreza WRX STI Type R...Or any 90's model...???

  • lol i heard the bird chirping in the background and thought it was a messed up blow off valve or something..

  • @papertigers426 Same lol

  • that car sounds narly with the intake and xr-1 and verry clean

  • Whats gay?

  • good video nice subie

  • pretty car...

    nice sound good job

  • i want one man. same year too.

  • Sounds good. but for the love of god please get off your CLUTCH!!!!! :)

  • yes!! he gonna kill the poor car!

  • someone always has to hate on something like they know everything

  • i hope some1 takes ur camera next time u drive off and make 1 of these vids

  • hahah your funny. that subaru will probably run that dude over and use that guy's head as a camera stand.

  • or if he drives over it

  • your downpipe have a cat???

  • yup

  • Do you have a tune with this setup? Have you had any air/fuel ratio problems? I have the same setup on my 2005 and I've been considering putting the stock air box back on till i get a tune.

  • I don't, but having read up on it a bit recently, I think I'm going to once I can pool together some cash. I don't drive it too much these days (live in the city). I haven't noticed any air/fuel ratio problems yet.

  • yea i hear you. just put the stock airbox on yesterday and car runs alot smoother. didnt want a tune so just went to stock. love it.

  • @hoagie7980 dude you should get a tune.

a tune would do more than a CAI.

  • @jamesonw23 NASIOC

  • i can see you care about your camra alot huh ,,,, lmao !!!! jk

  • i think it sounds alot nicer without the typhoon, but thats my opinion.

  • is that the catback system #14978? or did you piece one together yourself?

    it sounds bad ass,

  • I suppose. I didn't piece it together myself, it's the entire set up from Borla.

  • i have the same setup sounds amazing, little loud at high speed though

  • This engine sound is fu***ng amazing !!! I would love to have my own Impreza :)

  • how loud is it in the cabin?

im upgrading my 02 but i don't want it too loud inside

  • It's not that loud. It's pleasant, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

  • APS, Cobb, Perrin and SPT intakes are the only intakes worth installing at this stage. Using any other brand is like throwing your money away. They don't amount to shit unless you have some serious supporting tunes like bigger turbo, engine management, etc. Oh, and don't buy a BOV unless you're getting a monster turbo because at this state of tune, they actually make the engine run lean between shifts.

  • Yeah, Subies don't like intakes/blow off valves in fact my friend but a intake/bov on his 06 wrx and was losing boost.

  • Comment removed

  • Well yah if you get a tune for it of course, but with out a tune it's not going to run right which is what happens with most people they do the stage 2 set up with the cobb stage 2 map and they get a BOV and Intake to produce more noise and the car runs worse since your not tuned for them.

  • it should just be running rich between shifts...shouldn't be losing boost because of it.

  • you can not get tuned for a blow off valve.. what are you going to tune? the fuel at 0 throttle open angle at point a and point b? you see what im talking about? its almost saying turning down the fuel at idle so you dont spit fire. you need to run a front mount with a blow throu maf with the maf relocated to combat the actual efect, but then is when your maf has to be tuned for the change in scaleing

  • They run rich between shifts, but this is basicly true.

  • Yeah, it's actually running rich between shifts. Think about it: extra fuel is being injected for the recirculating air....but the air isn't recirculated...therefore extra fuel-rich.

However, yes BOVs are dumb unless running very high boost, and AEM intakes are pieces of shit. I would only go with APS, Cobb and SPT, just because I have been very dissatisfied with all of the Perrin products I have bought.

  • IDK why people say if u buy a BOV, the car is gonna lose boost or run rich or run lean. Do u actually see this happening in the car or just ur friends told you??

Its hard for a car to run rich or lean if u put a BOV, unless its a cheap one, unknown brand.

To back this up, the computer has the MAF, AIT, Boost, TP and Oxygen sensors as guides to how much gas and how much timing the engine needs.

If the car ran lean or rich, the check engine would come on.

    i havent seen that happend.

  • uh yea it has been backed up by tuners and anyone that has the capability to log this particular car. since i can tell you dont own a subaru, or never have, you are blind to see why running a vent to atmosphere blow off valve would be detrimental. now when you have a vent to atmosphere installed and start to drive you end up having after fires inbetween shifts. while running the stock BPV, you dont have these problems. on a STi its not that much of a rich condition to throw a CEL.

  • BOV's that vent to atmosphere can run rich betweenshifts causing backfires, can cause idle issues, and part throttledrivability on cars that have MAF sensors. This is due to metered air,the ECU thinks is being ingested by the engine, being expelled to theatmosphere.

  • Itsb because the engine and computer are DESIGNED to have a non atmospheric vented BOV. The MAF especially on a Subaru freaks otu adn the AFRs jump all over the place making the engine usually run pig rich after a shift of any sort. that's why a lot of WRX owners with some sort of vented BOV have a black bumper.

  • then again, I could be wrong.. maybe thats just how yours sounds.. but its definitely a whirring noise. other than that though, nice car, I can't wait till i can get more money to start putting more in my Subi.

  • your alt is making the same noise mine is.. It may go in the next year or so.

  • by the way car sounds nice mate :-)

  • 14k for a 04 with 45,000 miles on it is a lot i just got an 04 wrx sti with 48,000 on it for 8,900 was only up for 9,200 and had a mate who just sold his o5 wr1 for 14k with about 55,000 on clock must of seen you comeing themastaplan

  • hi mate im getting an 04 sti type uk with 18k miles, full service,1 owner,2 year warranty on friday for 12k

    off arnold clark

  • u got an 04 sti, 48kmiles.. for $8900??????

  • £8,900 pounds yes love it sooooo much that boxter engine sound nice deep growl :-)

  • boxer

  • tru

  • Which xr-1 exhaust did you buy?

  • HEy did you even find out which one work best for the WRX? i saw that there were a lot of XR-1

  • Might be selling the car, everyone. Let me know if you're interested.

  • lets of more of a roar with the typhoon and the xr-1 i say

  • Wow, that sounds really good!

  • no bov?

  • shaddup stupid.

  • what ur problem bitch

  • you

  • your car sounds soo good

  • cool, so which way you think of going? cobb ap? pro tuned? ecuteck? let me know. im thinking of buyhing one of these cars and doing research at the moment at nasioc and clubwrx.

  • you are tuned right?

  • No, not tuned yet. Saving money at the moment, but have a tune on my list of things to do.

  • how much is a tune usually cost?? i know it all depends on where u go im sure, but what kind of price range are we talkin??

  • 300 to 400 bucks.

  • damn, that aint shit. sweet man, thanks

  • Yeah, many shops will charge by the hour and it takes a few. I tuned my car with Romraider, since I have the computer software and an OBDII/USB cable, but both of my friends STI's were tuned for roughly 400$. My way is okay, but if you want a really good tune and you don't plan on modifying your engine(intake, exhaust, block) for a while-take it to a shop.

  • Hey i have a 1997 Honda Prelude, and i was wondering what your exhaust setup was...i currently am debating on what xr-1 muffler to buy...oval, round, multicore or sportsman, lol

  • Nice car dude, how much was she?

  • about $32,000

  • 32k??? are you joking? You can buy a zero mileage 08 sti for that much...

  • When I bought the car, in '05, it was a very low mileage 1-year old car. That's why it was still worth that much. That's NOT what I'm asking for it now, re-read the initial post from DrumsAndConcussions.

  • Yeah no kidding.

Our economy sucks right now, Subaru wants to get rid of these STIs cuz they can't sell.

  • i bought my 04 sti for 14k and it had 45,000 miles on it...thats not bad at all for a sti....they hold their price and are very reliable cars...i dont think they are trying to get rid of their sti's...maybe the gay hatchback 08's but 02-05 are very hard to find esp for a good price

  • Yeah I meant the hatchbacks.

The peanut eye and the hawkeye ones (04-07) are probably only available used or lightly used now.

  • sounds good but still sounds too loud. cop magnet especially with the big sti wing.

  • Haven't been pulled over yet, 3+ years and counting......knock on wood.

  • I have an 06 STI and considering putting on this intake does anyone know if it will cause the check engine light to come on?

  • Hasn't done it to me yet, and I've had it on for more than a year and a half.

  • Excelent comparison video!

  • I am going to get the induction kit, but I'm still deciding on the exhaust, but I might have just made my mind up!

    Good video!

  • wait so you have a CBE and intake without a tune? Do you have a wideband?

  • the k&n makes it sound and run alot better though

  • beautiful sound man. like it w/ the Typhoon. i dream of owning an '04 or '05 some day...

  • does the borla exhaust ever get on your nerves?Im thinking of getting this muffler for my 06 wrx and have custom piping done with it since borla only makes the twin tips catback for wrx and single tip for sti but im still deciding on what i wanna do...Just don't wanna get a exhaust too loud in low-mid revs so i dont get annoyed with it coming home from work...

  • I was concerned about the same thing before I got the exhaust, but I have to say that the sound is perfectly balanced between being too quiet/unnoticeable and too loud/obnoxious. It has a really tasteful rumble that isn't overbearing at idle, and it's never gotten on my nerves.

  • Unless it's a v8, for any import or domestic,

Borla Always has a Quite sound, but very Tasteful as you put it. which is why Borla Win's. Sweet WRX love the sound.

  • sounds good

  • if you wanna keep the rumble. dont put on tuned length extractors cause they make it sount like a honda.

  • extractors? lol. You mean equal length headers?

  • also known as extractors.........

  • lol don't run over the camera!

  • stage 4: carbon driveshaft, lightweight flywheel, upgraded limited slip, racing clutch and tranny and when i say racing i mean the ones on race cars where there is no smooth shifting not those street racing high performance clutch

  • where do i find out about what the stages are for wrx?

i mean, i dont undestand what needs to be done to make it stage 2 or stage 3 or whatever

  • stage I = tune

stageII = dp or cat delete

stageIII = turbo + supporting mods

  • oh thats pretty easy...

so an exhaust and a tune = stage 2 lready?

    ty

  • the song boxer is brutal

  • one hot ass car.

  • At the low rpms it sounds nice, but when it downreved from the higher rpms, it had that buzzy noise like a honda.....

  • yea i know what you mean. that kills an exhaust for me. I hate that sound when its dropping rpms from being revved up for example=1.36 and 2.09 and 2.15. except this one is not that noticable, hondas would sound good if it werent for that little raddling noise at the low rpm from a rev.

  • No blow off?

  • i feel like an ididot at the beginning i was like wtf is that noise whats wrong with that engine....then i was like oh wait thats birds chirping haha

  • Have to ask what program did you use to edit you video and add text??

Thanks And it sounds good did the typhoon make a noticable differance?

  • I'm not sure the exact program we used. My friend helped me out and we did it on his Mac, but that's about all I know. Typhoon didn't make a huge difference, but I can say that it feels like it breathes better and revs a bit smoother. Plus the sound is a bit throatier but, subjectively, that's about it.

  • hoagie, are you mad that you got that setup b/c you werent aware of the sound?

  • No, not at all. I love it. But when I was looking for an exhaust I was considering a whole bunch----Invidia, Injen, HKS, Borla, etc.---and it was hard to decide. If there had been good clips for me to watch to get a sense of the sound of each, it would have made the decision easier. That's mainly why I made this vid. I'm really happy with the set-up so far and want anyone else who's trying to choose an exhaust/intake to get a taste of what the Borla/K&N sounds like.

  • lol nice drivin the car over the camera

  • lol yeah. i couldn't do that, my Jetta is way too low rofl

  • sounds nice as fuck

  • that sounds good, i have the K&N on my 05 wrx and i love it im getting the INJEN SES TT turbo back this week

  • hey man, did you get the Borla XR-1 as an axle back unit? ...if so, where? i'm having trouble finding it. I want to mate it to my TurboXS turbo back, i've heard it sounds extremely unique that way.

  • did you pm me on nasioc?

  • haha, yeah i definitely did.

  • It comes as a cat-back. Not sure what it would take to mate it to the turbo-back w/out the cat, maybe some extender pipe, but you should be able to find the cat-back unit without a problem with a Google search.

  • get a duck BOV

  • I'm gettin an '05 sometime this week. Damn I cant wait.

  • omg the thing sounds like a fucking lion puring!! damn that's nice

  • get a wastegate screamer on it dude, that'll make it sound Effing mint thats what i wana do to my WRX

  • man id love to buy that car!!!!

  • fing BEAUTIFUL

  • that purr is very sexy: from 36 - 46 secs.

  • that purr is very sexy.

  • you could use a couple nuts...in your mouth

  • I don't know why i love Subaru so much LoL.

  • hey i like that all you need is a downpipe depending on where u live lol

  • That sounds really good, very impressive.

  • Thats how a four banger should sound. no farts =] just pure power.

  • ear orgasm

  • Whats up Hoagie just wonderen if you did any other mods to the car since this video.

  • nope, none more so far. saving some money and haven't had the time to research and install. but i've definitely been thinking about it so maybe soon. any suggestions?

  • just courious,,, is this the only aftermarket kit youve done,,, as far as the exhaust goes?? if so have you noticed a significant loss on your bottom end?? what was the response like, sounds great thanks for the time on the clip, great car

  • yeah, that's it with the exhaust for now. not sure what you mean when you ask if i've lost on the bottom end. do you mean torque-wise?

  • Sounds better from inside the car than outside cause u can hear that sweet engine rev too. I like the rolling over the camera angle, I may try that in the Vette but I bet the underside would clip the camera, if I can fit it, imma try that.

  • I'd say the intake give the rumble a lower tone
