2 - 3 = -1. Why is this wrong?

-3(x+5) is in a way a single term. 2-3x does not equal -1x. 2- 3(x) does not equal -1x. The multiplication must be done first.

Why can't you deduct 2 from -3 prior to multiplying by (x+5)? that's just a random thought of mine.

Due to order of operations (Parenthesis - Exponents - Multiplication - Division -Addition - Subtraction), you need to first take care of the multiplication designated by the parenthesis following the negative three.
