Different country, different etiquette.

Talking on the phone/making loud noises on trains in Japan is frowned upon.

Most people in public transportation keep quiet, sleep, read, etc. Texting/playing handheld games is acceptable though.

@greyhounds4u its rude to talk on a cell phone in a train because there are other people around you that might not be interested in what you are saying. typically, the subways in tokyo are very quiet (in terms of people not speaking). of course the subway is loud but people tend not to talk too much. besides nowadays majority of people text so its not like you'll die if you dont talk on the phone. just wait until you get off.
