I know when I was riding my dirtbike for the first time I was focusing on what was in front of me and not falling, the bike will survive some crappy shifting for a while, a new riders spirit to keep going can be stopped.

Mate of mine years ago took his bike test on his only bike, a Yamaha TY250 trials machine. When the tester said to him, "I want you to test your slow riding, so please keep pace with me as I walk along the path." My mate stood up on the foot pegs with the engine running and in gear, and just balanced the bike. The tester turned back after 4 paces, watched him for a few seconds, then said " Alright, lets move on to the next item."

all i can tell you about jumps as i'm new to motocross myself is that when you're about to go off the jump you better be well balanced and neutral on the bike, or else things can go very bad
