Just get rid of interstate barriers and let the supply increase. Labor rights? Labor conditions improved mostly w/o unions as in 1900 only 3% of workers were in unions. Competition from employers improved conditions, not labor laws.

This is already being experimented with in the form of charter schools. Some are successful, some are just as wasteful and low performing as public schools. @Aegius By 1918 all states had cumpulsory public education so its been around a LONG time. If SSI was properly funded it also would be fine for a long time to come, although it would be vastly better off with if we had a single payer national healthcare system. Also guess what...WE ALREADY HAVE HEALTHCARE RATIONING EVERYWHERE! MY father for example can't have certain lifesaving procedures for example due to his health conditions and age. I have no insurance myself and recently got stuck with a $2,400 bill for having 1 CAT scan and doctor spending 5 minutues of his time to tell me that I had kidney stones. That is absolutely insane. My relatives in Colombia paid $300 to have a CAT scan done there. So something is not right.

@wigon Did you know that in the whole of North America only 1 part of health care has brought plummeting cost & increasing quality: laser eye-surgery? Why? No ins and no gov. Just doctor:patient and that's it. Just let the entrepreneurs work w/patients directly and costs will plummet and quality increase. That's the free market at work and we don't have that mostly w/too much gov involvement in health care.
@Aegius Um...there are ALOT of other factors why laser eye-surgery costs are low including the production-line style setups many of these clinics have coupled with the streamlined procedures that make this surgery relatively efficient. It's still not cheap at around $1000 an eye give or take $200. Like I said, my city has at least 8 major hospitals all competing and costs are still sky high here. Likewise with the hundreds of specialist clinics that are all super expensive.

America needs to go back to the original tax system.. no income tax / tax on money gained through labor.....all tax revenues were gained from business/corporate transactions and import/export levies. incorporation was also strictly regulated as to be granted only for the purpose of contributing to the public good, not maximizing profit and creating large bank deposits. Business owners were personally responsible for any litigation brought against the company, so business was clean.

@wigon Clinton balanced the budget and cut welfare AFTER Republicans took over in 1994. Fiscal policy starts from the House of Representatives. Keynesian policies NEVER work and that's why Obama's policies were doomed to fail. We have had massive spending sprees and expansion under Bush '43, when Repubs lost their way. But w/Dems it has been far worse. People got fed up w/both parties. Enter the TEA Party. & The Lefties did the dumbest thing possible: Play the race card.

What Obama is doing now is pure dammage control and addressing out of control health care costs that the Republicans refused to address. European countries haven't been using Keynesian policies since the economic meltdown in 2008 and have become less regulated as we have become more regulated. Pollution controls? You mean like on CO2 and other gases? Yes, let's get rid of that. Anti-monopoly laws? Just harass companies & accomplish nothing. Anti-fraud laws? NO one ever called for that.

@Aegius I have heard nothing about European nations ridding themselves of Keynesian economics. They are still almost all heavily socialist systems in large parts of their economy. As I said, they understand when to regulate and when not to regulate instead of fearmongering about communism and all the B.S. we have here. I've also yet to hear of a single European nation abandon their socialist national healthcare systems.

@wigon Germany, UK, Sweden & other states have cut back on services, cut back on taxes & cut back on spending, b/c there is no more money to spend. That is why Germany's growth rate is at 9% while ours is at best at 1.6%. Regulation doesn't provide for growth but inhibits it by not allowing for people to freely pursue economic investment and increasing costs. We are MORE regulated than most of Europe w/300K regulations. It's ridiculous.

That increased supply will cause costs to plummet and as they are competing they will have to improve their services. @wigon SSI, Medicare and Medicaid are ALL bankrupt. The elderly, handicapped & mentially ill can get better insurance w/ massive competition from 1300 cos rather than 5-10 in their respective states. Just get rid of interstate barriers and let the supply increase. Labor rights? Labor conditions improved mostly w/o unions as in 1900 only 3% of workers were in unions. Competition from employers improved conditions, not labor laws.

@Aegius They are almost (not quite yet) bankrupt because all of the money that could have kept it going was squandered on two wars and two parties unwilling to reform the system and finding alternatives to funding it. I do agree on getting rid of interstate barriers for insurance but again that still does not address the huge masses of individuals who can not afford ANY insurance let alone day to day living expenses for which they rely on SSI. What happens to people with severe disabilities?

@wigon No one is calling for the police dept to be privatized as only gov can enforce its own laws. As for public education, yes, let's either have vouchers or outright privatize. Gov-run education has been a disastrous failure. Seriously, private schools do a far superior job than gov-run schools. Same would apply to gov-run hospitals vs private hospitals or anything else by gov. Competition improve conditions for consumers & laborers. Regulations makes things worse, by restricting freedom.

@Aegius Outright privatizing schools would result in masses of poor children who can not afford private schools unless...guess what...its paid for by YOUR TAX DOLALRS. This is already being experimented with in the form of charter schools. Some are successful, some are just as wasteful and low performing as public schools. (I'm a VP of a successful charter school board by the way). We have TONS of competition in hospitals (8) where I live...but guess what....prices continue to skyrocket!

@wigon Not necessarily on kids not getting schooling. IN fact parents didn't seek to get schools made gov-run, but rather school administrators did. Schools would compete for parents and lower prices to accommodate. Thanks for admitting that there is a lot of waste in public education. SSI, Medicare & Medicaid aren't bankrupt due to the wars, but too high of costs that aren't contained. Gov can't manage to control costs unless rationing occurs.

If SSI was properly funded it also would be fine for a long time to come, although it would be vastly better off with if we had a single payer national healthcare system. Also guess what...WE ALREADY HAVE HEALTHCARE RATIONING EVERYWHERE! MY father for example can't have certain lifesaving procedures for example due to his health conditions and age. But hey, that's just market economics.

@Aegius So basically what I'm saying as that the whole "Competition in a free-market" ideal has failed miserably in the healthcare industry. I have no insurance myself and recently got stuck with a $2,400 bill for having 1 CAT scan and doctor spending 5 minutues of his time to tell me that I had kidney stones. That is absolutely insane. My relatives in Colombia paid $300 to have a CAT scan done there. So something is not right.

I state that it has NOT been tried except among increasing doctors' clinics who have left the ins ind & gov and just form offices that are like coffee shops w/price lists. @wigon Did you know that in the whole of North America only 1 part of health care has brought plummeting cost & increasing quality: laser eye-surgery? Why? No ins and no gov. Just doctor:patient and that's it. Just let the entrepreneurs work w/patients directly and costs will plummet and quality increase. That's the free market at work and we don't have that mostly w/too much gov involvement in health care.

@Aegius Um...there are ALOT of other factors why laser eye-surgery costs are low including the production-line style setups many of these clinics have coupled with the streamlined procedures that make this surgery relatively efficient. It's still not cheap at around $1000 an eye give or take $200. Like I said, my city has at least 8 major hospitals all competing and costs are still sky high here. Likewise with the hundreds of specialist clinics that are all super expensive.

A flat tax hurts the poor the most (and the rich would always find loopholes to avoid paying taxes), meanwhile without a federal reserve we would have no way of managing extreme economic recessions/depressions.

America needs to go back to the original tax system.. no income tax / tax on money gained through labor.....all tax revenues were gained from business/corporate transactions and import/export levies. incorporation was also strictly regulated as to be granted only for the purpose of contributing to the public good, not maximizing profit and creating large bank deposits. Business owners were personally responsible for any litigation brought against the company, so business was clean.

- The Postal Service
- Public Libraries
- Police officers
- Fire Fighters
- The US armed forces
50% is a lot, maybe too much, but our taxes go to a lot of things I'd rather not go without.

Ear mark spending... ya know when a bill on "climate change" includes a 12 million dollar ear mark to build a movie theater in West Virgina... yeah.. that type of crap. So by and large 2/3 of the 3 biggest chunks are wasted on nonsense.
