  • Your recording sounds amazing! What mic are you using?

  • where is cherokee?

  • now do it with two fingers

  • Very nice rendition! Looks like one of those Gitane gypsy guitars, which I've been considering adding to my collection. Hearing this helps me with my decision on which model I'll get, as I've also considered the "Petite Bouche" style. Thanks for posting this. Good playing!

  • This is a bass player's worst nightmare. Trust me on this.

  • @handicappedhoods why do say that? im a bass player just curious. also to the guitarist in this video, where did you get this backing track? im trying to learn to improvise piano/guitar and im looking for good backing tracks like this

  • @ArkRed

He said in a comment reply that he did the backings himself. =)

  • Dial D for Django.

  • Awesome!

  • I used to listen to certain performances and pieces of music way back at the beginning of the year, namely this one.

It feels kind of nostalgic to listen to it again. I almost forgot how well you played.

  • very very very nice Thanks !! great pleasure to listen (and watch)

  • I love your background. Where did you get it? If it's Abersold I might have it. I used to do the song in G, but am learning it in Bb. Thanks for posting.

  • I think I recall a documentary saying that Charlier Parker (Bird), discovered the flat 5 while fooling around with the bridge of Cherokee. I loved tearing apart this tune!

Thanks for putting this on! ♫

  • Dandy, just Dandy!!!

  • Thanks for making my day!

  • Just checkin' out some of your videos and saying hello!

  • Very fine tone - and very fine played. Well done, mate!

  • Man, I love this song.

Also, it somehow reminds me of good old cartoons such as The Flintstones and Tom and Jerry for some reason. In a totally good way, I mean! :D

  • magical CHEROKEE BEAT gypsy romantic guitars, love it very much

  • To all the 17-year-olds that hang around youtube watching videos of Linkin' Park or some other horrible band, and think that Kurt Cobain was the greatest guitarist ever: I hope you watch this.

  • @51362879 its 2011, kids dont listen to that anymore. they listen to shitty autotuned songs

  • @djbot Yeah, a generation gone to waste!

    sad.

  • @djbot Agree 100%

  • @djbot Speak for yourself. Some of us do actually have a sense of musical insight and our own musical identity...

  • @1makes1 so you're a kid huh? well that sucks. and what musical insight do you hold? and what musical identity do you speak of. please elaborate or is that most intellectual thing you can type

  • @djbot As a matter of fact I do have a wider taste of music than autotuned and shallow artists.

The fact of me being a teenager in the 21st century doesn't mean that I'm not exploring a diversity of talented artists with a more meaningful message than chugging beers, smoking spliffs and f***ing bitches.

I value artists with musical and lyrical talent(s) and the originality to make something extraordinary.

Stereotyping an entire generation seems to me to be very immature of you.

  • @51362879 it's funny you say that because i am actually 17 and i share the same views as you.

  • You are a amazing musician.

    This song sounds really good.

  • I have this exact guitar. I got it for 400. Is that a good price?

  • what type of acoustic would that be called

  • When are you going to post some more videos or make a cd? Cannot get enough. Thanks a ton -Leedy

  • great phrasing!

  • Great sound and nice phrasing. Lovely!

  • So fluid mate, Bruce Nicol, Cheers

  • really cool.

  • Now try it with only two fingers!!! Ha ha.

Seriously, well done. This is a very good take on a classic.

  • Wow, very cool.

  • This is fantastic.

  • Musicality and expressiveness win out over flashiness in the end. This my be the best standard ever written. That bridge is just heaven! I also like Tadd Dameron's tunes...I wish people played things like "Lady Bird" and "Our Delight" more often.

  • Greatly played, so much hapiness in this song :-) Very nice quality of recording and playing too. The start reminds me of "Sunny"

  • Is this the Art Tatum Cherokee?

  • @coolcooja It's the Ray Noble Cherokee, which Art Tatum and every other Jazz musician recorded.

  • amazing. I love this style of jazz, it makes me happy...

  • Sir u r a genius

    Thank you

  • Sounds perfect to me!

  • I LOVE YOUR PLAYIN'!

  • splendido

  • As always, you rule Leigh...

  • YOU MEAN YOU NEED TO see THE CHORDS? LOL

  • nice! john mclaughlin alsodoes a really good version of this song that you can find on youtube.

  • is the guitar TAB for this available somewhere?!?

    i'm a student..

  • hahaha. yeah. in fact communication in general is for lame people. :)

  • Excellent........

  • bravo... nice music.

  • Comment removed

  • really nice.

  • nice solo man, I enjoyed listening.

  • good

  • nicely done!! not too showy, which is a problem i have with some of the gypsy jazz stars.

  • very beautiful mate, awesome stuff

  • Is he is Bb? Is that the standard key? I do Cherokee in G, but I like the sound of Bb better.

  • Very, very nice. ;?)

  • ahhhhhhhhh, i think im the rare few groups of people in the world that enjoys practicing scales : )

  • great music !

  • can someone tell me what guitar is that?

  • I believe its a Gitane. They are nice and affordable, look it up.

  • this is beautiful but borrows very heavily from the joe pass version in both chord voicings and phrasing.

    ace tho..well done

  • Just a beautiful song.

    Wonderful perfomance.

    I love it so much.

    I added to my favourites

  • i wanna learn the gipsy guitar style but i don't know what to start with?? can you help me like books internet websites? what kind of guitar do u actually use? how much does it cost?

  • learn the major scale.

  • Play scales...until you are Blue in the face...or ...Play Blues until you are Scaly in the face...I`m just listenin` and pickin`...and Lovin` every note I hear...though sadly...not every note that I play..!!

  • What pick you use ?

  • What pick?! If that's all you have to worry about after hearing this go out and buy a few. Try them all until you find one you like.

  • The reason Xiphosss asked the question is because Gypsy Jazz guitarists quite often use a special pick which is very thick and dense and are slightly beveled. They are incredible, changes your sound and technique immediately to a new standard. You might not believe me but it's true. Some famous brands are Wegen and Dugain. They cost about US15 ~ US20 but they are totally worth it in my opinion. It will take some getting used to because it's very thick (standard is 3.5mm) but it makes you better.

  • awesome!!! great tone, great solo, great guitar, you rock bro!

  • great, melodic and tasty. 5/5

  • 5 stars

  • Truth in music says...now this is smokin and smooth!

  • I could never hold myself to these standards. I only wish I could play this well. This is AWESOME!!!!!

  • Grace!

  • perfect! i play trumpet and just love playing clifford browns solo over the top for practise, being a bit slowed down. LOVE IT!!!

  • I see you wrote in the description text some stuff about experts. Well let me break the news to ya, man. They may be famous, but you are an expert just as well!

  • In a word Excellent!

Thank you Wow I enjoyed this :)

  • Wow! you need an ending though

  • This doesn't deserve an ending. it goes on forever mate.

  • I definately like it the way it is.

  • Very creative!!

  • No, I agree. I don't like fade outs either.

  • Great job working in the chords to your lead playing. Love it!

  • Very nice soloing. Tasty and creative. I play a fingerstyle version and am trying to incorporate fingerstyle soloing instead of my usual flatpicking solos. I have uploaded a fingerstyle rendition of the head and will put it up as a video response WorkInProgress. Thanks for sharing a great version of a great tune!

  • I'm usually drawn to more modern players and styles, but you have to love the elegance of late swing/early bebop.

  • Like modern architecture, the main change is in the lack of complexity. Angelo Debarre is modern, but plays gypsy swing flat out; as fast as any shredder. What you perceive as modern, is just what the media decides will appeal to a mass market. McDonald's is modern, and popular, but Cordon Bleu is better. And don't forget Django played this with only two good left-hand fingers!!

  • very nice. LOVE it! [K.I.A.]

  • thank you.

  • De mais , muito legal de suar a camisa...

  • awesome!

  • nice shirt

  • i wonder how django managed to play faster song with only 2 fingers most of the time, i'm sure he was an alien :P:P

  • Damn Great!

  • i just love this piece. so many players think they have to fly through it but to me, this is the perfect tempo. i'd still like to know how you get the background music...same with your swing gitan...perfect

  • ♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫♪♫

Thanks Brotou , I did the backings myself just with the same guitar and keyboard for the bass part.

    best

    Leigh

  • In Herb Ellis & Joe Pass' "Two for the Road" you can find two "concepts" of this tune for two guitars, one flying-like and the other slightly slower than this one from Leigh. I also think this piece is perfect for gipsy style guitar and a not-so-fast tempo gives more space for melodic development.

    Nice take, Leigh. Best Regards.

  • @jazztube Keep on playing this way!! You have an unique, a special style, your Phrases are not the common gypsy- phrases. I want to hear more of you!

Cherokee a la jazztube is on my favourites- list :))

  • nice sounding guitar, the music is kinda funny and pleasent to the hear:)u wanna watch my original composition , it is called "A Battle In The Skyes"

  • how do they get the rhythm background music?

  • Freakin amazing bud!

  • what the name of this player?

    u re great!!!

    t assure une max!!!michto

  • Great .... Clean picking... No mistakes... Wish I could still move my fingers that fast.

    Good on you Leigh.

    Regards

    John

  • Man I love watching you play!

  • Thanks for the camera angle also we can see what you are doing much better than a lot of "how to" videos show. We appreciate. Great execution.

  • Thank you for sharing. It is such enjoyable music I can't explain it. It stirs the soul.

  • which guitar is that? how does it play?

  • this is a Selmer - Maccaferri and has been used for the first time by legendary Django Reinhardt...practically the Steve Vai of Gipsy Jazz guitar...

  • Looks to be a Gitane D500, as mentioned a Selmer-Maccaferri style guitar. It plays like a dream, probably the easiest guitar on the fingers, second only to a nylon string guitar.

  • bird lives

  • This is unreal..!

  • I am mad that i must run to work because I've just finished playing guitar but am compelled to fake sick and play

  • BRAVO!!!

  • You are very good Leigh. You have a very pure tone and the inprovisation are swinging. Keep it up.

  • Hi Leigh ! Nice Job and Nice playing. Keep Swinging. Your French Friend, Olivier.

  • very good once more.you are really melodic.bravo

  • i wanna play like U! T-T desde Venezuela un saludo my lord... chao. chamin chambon tocas muy bien.

  • Nice!!

  • Incredible technique. Incredible music. I just lack words to describe what I feel. Great job you did! Post more videos of gypsy jazz, please. (.....what I would give to play guitar jus like that - have been playing for 1 year up to now, but I seriously suck.

  • FANTASTIC!
